Keep AI-generated code consistent by making the repository’s formatter configuration the source of truth, telling your AI assistant which formatter and command to use, then running that formatter and checking it in CI. Prompts help guide the assistant; editor settings and automated checks make the workflow repeatable.
Make the repository configuration the source of truth
Start with the formatter and settings the project already uses. Store the configuration in version control rather than relying on a developer’s global preferences. Prettier recommends project configuration so its command-line tool, editor integrations, and other tools can share the same options; it avoids global configuration to help keep formatting consistent across computers. See Prettier’s configuration guide.
Before changing style rules, check which configuration applies to each file. Prettier searches upward from the file being formatted for configuration. It also reads selected EditorConfig properties, including line endings, indentation, and maximum line length; Prettier configuration takes precedence over those values. A file in a nested package or subdirectory may therefore resolve differently from a file at the repository root. The resolution behavior and supported options are documented in Prettier’s API documentation and options reference.
- Locate the formatter and its checked-in configuration before asking an assistant to edit code.
- For multiple languages or subprojects, verify the formatter and applicable settings for each file path.
- Check for command-line overrides and EditorConfig values when a file’s output differs from expectations.
Tell the AI assistant what to run
Give the assistant a short, concrete repository instruction: name the formatter, point to its configuration, and provide the project’s actual command. For example:

Follow the formatter configuration in this repository. Do not introduce alternate formatting conventions. After editing, run the project formatter on changed files and report any formatter check that remains failing.
Adapt the wording to the repository and specify the real command and paths where useful. Add path-specific instructions only when conventions differ between directories or languages.

For GitHub Copilot, documented instruction mechanisms include repository-wide .github/copilot-instructions.md and path-specific .github/instructions/**/*.instructions.md files in supported contexts. GitHub describes formatting rules as a suitable coding-standard instruction, but support varies by feature and product surface; consult the repository-instructions guide and the custom-instructions support reference.
Instructions improve guidance, but they are not enforcement. GitHub cautions that, “Due to the non-deterministic nature of AI, Copilot may not always follow your custom instructions in exactly the same way every time they are used.” The warning appears in its Copilot response customization documentation.

Use the same formatter in the editor
Configure your IDE to use the repository’s formatter, and enable format-on-save if that suits the team’s workflow. For the Prettier VS Code extension, save-time formatting can use editor.codeActionsOnSave. If another formatter is selected as the default, Prettier’s save action may need to be enabled explicitly. Follow the extension’s current guidance in its VS Code README.
If saving does not produce the expected result, check which formatter VS Code has selected for the file and whether another save action is taking precedence. Editor settings are specific to the IDE and extension versions, so do not assume a VS Code setting applies to other editors.

Format generated edits and check them in CI
- Run the formatter on the AI-generated changes. Use the project’s normal command and, where supported, target the changed files.
- Review the resulting diff. Formatting conformance is separate from code correctness; inspect semantic changes, behavior, and tests independently.
- Add a non-mutating formatting check to CI. Prettier’s CLI supports
--checkto report files that are not formatted without rewriting them. Its API also exposes a check operation that reports whether a file matches the resolved formatting options. See the Prettier options reference and API documentation.
A CI check catches inconsistent changes even when contributors’ editor settings differ. Keep the check aligned with the same formatter and repository configuration used locally; otherwise, developers and automation can disagree about the expected output.
Choose a formatter that fits the project
Do not select a formatter simply because an AI tool mentions it. Use the project’s established formatter when it covers the files being edited. If the repository has no clear convention, compare the real options against these needs:

- Language and syntax: Does the formatter cover the files the assistant changes?
- Existing convention: Is a formatter and configuration already present in the repository?
- Editor and CI fit: Can the team run the same tool in its editor and automated checks?
- Configuration resolution: Can contributors tell which settings apply in each directory?
- Workflow policy: Should formatting rewrite files automatically, or should CI only report nonconforming files?
For Python, Ruff’s formatter offers settings such as line length, quote style, indentation style, and docstring code formatting. Ruff says its formatter focuses on compatibility with Black’s stable code style; Black describes itself as stable and opinionated and documents an AST-equivalence check for reformatting. Those tool-specific properties can inform a Python project’s choice, but they do not establish a universal best formatter. See Ruff’s formatter documentation and Black’s documentation.
