Download status does not turn a Game Pass title into a purchase. To keep playing after a catalog removal, buy that exact game or edition before its listed departure date. Xbox’s live catalog advertises a member saving of up to 20%, but the actual price, discount, platform and purchase availability vary by title, region, plan and date.
What happens when a Game Pass game leaves
Game Pass is a rotating catalog: Xbox adds some titles while removing others. When a game exits, the subscription entitlement that allowed you to launch it ends. Having installed the game is not the same as owning a license for it, so an installed copy can still require a purchase after the catalog deadline.

Xbox’s current catalog has a Leaving soon collection. The catalog describes those entries as games scheduled to leave within the next two weeks. The list is live, so check it for your own country, membership tier and platform rather than relying on an old social-media post or a list copied from another region.

Step-by-step: secure a game before its departure
1. Find the actual departure date
- Open the official Xbox Game Pass catalog.
- Open Leaving soon and locate the game. On console, the Game Pass area exposes the same collection; Xbox also points members to the Xbox mobile app and the Xbox App on Windows 10.
- Read the listing for your region, membership, platform and edition. A departure shown in one catalog view should not be assumed to apply identically to every platform or market.
- Record the displayed date and treat it as the last date to plan around. Do not wait until the final hours: store availability, regional timing and the listing itself can change.
2. Open the exact store listing
Select the game from the catalog and open its Xbox/Microsoft Store page. Check the title and edition carefully. A standard edition, deluxe edition, add-on, remaster or platform-specific version can be a different product. If you play on console, verify the console version; if you play on PC, verify the PC version or the edition that explicitly includes your platform.
The catalog currently says members can buy a departing game and save up to 20%. “Up to” is a ceiling, not a fixed discount: the title’s live store page is the authority for the price and offer at the moment you buy. Confirm that the purchase button is still present and that the displayed version works on the device you use.
3. Buy while the listing is available
Complete the purchase before the departure date if you want a reliable handoff from subscription access to ownership. A download made through Game Pass is only a catalog download; it is not proof that the game has been purchased. Keep the transaction details and the exact edition name so you can identify what was bought if several versions appear in your account.
Do not assume that a game will remain for sale after it leaves Game Pass. Catalog departure and store delisting are separate events, and a title can leave both at the same time. The safest purchase window is before the announced Game Pass exit, while the exact store listing still shows a purchase option.
4. If you are not buying, change your play order
Xbox recommends moving a departing title up your queue. Start the game early enough to account for campaign length, unfinished side content, updates and the departure time shown in your catalog. If you only need to finish a short section, avoid beginning a long download or update on the final day.
5. Check streaming only when you already own the title
Xbox has an expanding Stream your own game collection for Game Pass Ultimate members. The option applies only to games on the current eligibility list and to supported devices. Open the collection and search for the title; do not infer eligibility merely because the game was once included in Game Pass or because you own a different edition. How to choose between buying and finishing
Use the decision in this order:
- Would you replay the game? If yes, inspect the exact store listing now. A purchase is the only option in this guide that does not depend on finishing before the deadline.
- Is the game still purchasable? If the listing has no purchase option or warns of a separate delisting, prioritize playing it before the Game Pass date instead of assuming you can buy it later.
- Is the member offer worthwhile? Compare the live price with the value of the remaining play time. The advertised reduction can be as high as 20%, but the title-specific offer may be lower or unavailable.
- Do you already own it? If so, check Stream your own game eligibility and device support as an additional access route. Streaming availability is title-specific.
- Can you finish in the time left? If the answer is yes and you do not want to buy, move it ahead of other games and avoid starting a new long title until it is complete.
Cost, timing and platform trade-offs
The practical cost of keeping a game is the live purchase price shown for the exact product, minus any member offer displayed on that page. Xbox’s catalog uses the phrase up to 20%, so do not budget on the assumption that every departing title receives the same reduction. A lower-priced title may be worth buying for a future replay, while a game you are unlikely to revisit may be better handled by moving it to the front of your queue and finishing it at no additional cost.

Time matters as much as price. The Leaving soon collection is described as covering titles exiting within two weeks, but Xbox’s older guide only says members get “a couple weeks’ notice.” Use the date currently shown for your account rather than calculating a deadline from an announcement date. The final day is a poor time to discover that your platform has a different listing, the purchase offer is unavailable, or a large update still needs to install.
Platform and edition are part of the purchase decision. A console player should confirm the console product, while a PC player should confirm the PC product or an edition that explicitly includes PC access. Do not treat a similarly named deluxe edition, remaster, add-on or cross-platform product as automatically interchangeable. If you switch devices, check the catalog and store again for that platform.
What to verify on the store page
- The title matches the game you installed, not an add-on or similarly named release.
- The edition is the one you intend to keep, such as standard or deluxe.
- The platform matches the device on which you play.
- A purchase option is still visible before the Game Pass departure date.
- The displayed price and any member discount are current; “up to 20%” is not a guaranteed percentage.
- The listing applies to your region and membership context.
If any of those checks fail, treat the game as a finish-before-removal title rather than assuming a later purchase will be possible. The store and catalog can change independently, and a dated announcement may not describe your market or platform.
Why the store check matters
A Game Pass removal is not automatically a store removal, but the two can coincide. In a December 3, 2024 Xbox Wire announcement, Xbox said Forza Horizon 4 would leave both the Xbox/Microsoft Store and Game Pass on December 15, 2024. That dated case shows why “I’ll purchase it after it leaves” is not a safe general plan. The example is historical; it does not establish the present availability of any other game. A dated example of the notice and discount format
On April 2, 2025, Xbox published a departure list naming seven games—Botany Manor, Coral Island, Harold Halibut, Homestead Arcana, Kona, Orcs Must Die! 3 and Turbo Golf Racing—with an April 15 departure date. The post reminded members about a 20% purchase discount. Those names and dates are an example of how an announcement can be formatted, not a current departure list; use the live catalog for today’s titles.

Notifications and monitoring
Because the catalog changes, make the Leaving soon collection part of your normal Game Pass check:
- Enable Xbox mobile notifications if you want an alert when catalog news appears.
- Check the Game Pass section on console or the Xbox App on Windows 10 when you decide what to play next.
- Use Xbox Wire announcements as supplemental notice, then verify the game’s own catalog and store pages. An announcement can be dated, regional or tied to a particular wave of changes.
- Recheck the platform and edition if you switch between console and PC. A game’s availability can differ by platform, region or membership plan.
Save files, editions and cancellations: limits to what is guaranteed
The available Xbox guidance does not establish one universal rule for save synchronization or post-cancellation save access across every game, tier, platform, edition and launcher. Do not promise yourself that a save will always transfer, remain accessible or work with every separately sold edition. Before buying a different edition or moving from subscription access to a purchase, check the title-specific support information and, where possible, confirm that the purchased version matches the platform and edition you used.
A subscription cancellation and a catalog departure are also different events. A cancellation changes your membership entitlement; a departure removes a particular title from the catalog. In either case, the practical protection for a game you want to keep is an eligible purchase, while an owned title’s streaming option remains conditional on the current Stream your own game list and supported hardware.
