But the ISP event that changes the address may briefly disconnect your internet, interrupting the feed. Check the encoder and router connection first; do not assume that buying a static IP will solve the problem.
What changes when your ISP assigns a new IP address?
Your router’s public, or WAN, IP address is the address your internet provider assigns to your connection. It can change after a reconnection. Your encoder’s connection to YouTube is a separate matter: YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key. Its setup guidance does not list a fixed public IP as a normal prerequisite for going live. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the destination and key an encoder uses.

If the ISP change happens during a brief loss of service, the encoder may stop sending video even though the YouTube stream settings remain correct. A new IP address by itself does not establish why a particular stream dropped. The router’s WAN status and event log, encoder’s error or reconnect log, and ISP outage or reconnection time can help distinguish an address change from a wider connection interruption or another cause.

What to check after the stream drops
- Check the home connection. Confirm the router has restored internet access after the ISP event. Look at its WAN status and event log for a reconnect or outage around the time the stream stopped.
- Check the encoder. Confirm it is still sending data and review its status or error log. If it reports a start error, verify the stream key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and update the encoder if the key there differs from the one configured.
- Verify the YouTube destination and key. In Live Control Room, check the current stream’s server URL and stream key, then compare them with the encoder settings. Keep the key private: it is the credential the encoder uses to send the feed. YouTube’s guidance on managing live stream settings covers stream configuration.
- Use the matching protocol and URL. If your encoder is configured for RTMPS, select or copy the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room and use it with the stream key. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP protected by TLS/SSL in its RTMPS instructions. Encryption does not guarantee that a stream will survive an ISP interruption.
- Reset the key only when there is a reason. If you believe the key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder to use the new key. Otherwise, changing it is not a fix for an ISP reconnection.
Do you need a static IP address?
Not as a default fix for streaming to YouTube. The YouTube encoder setup cited here calls for a server URL and stream key, not a static public IP. A static-IP requirement can apply to a different service: the Government of India’s NIC webcast service asks for a static public IP to be shared for whitelisting. That requirement belongs to its own webcast process, not ordinary YouTube Live setup. See NIC’s Webcast Services information.

Likewise, the information available here does not establish that a VPN or a particular router will prevent this YouTube stream from dropping. First identify whether the encoder lost internet access, reported a key or destination error, or encountered another issue. For a specific incident, compare router and encoder logs with the ISP’s reconnection time.
