Run the encoder inside a tmux session on the VPS, then detach from tmux before closing SSH. The encoder can keep running after your SSH connection ends; tmux does not restart a crashed encoder, recover a dropped YouTube connection, or bring a stream back after a VPS reboot.
Keep the encoder running after SSH disconnects
tmux keeps a terminal session alive on the remote server when you detach or lose your SSH connection. The important detail is that tmux must run on the VPS, and the encoder must be started inside that tmux session. A tmux session on your own computer will not protect a process running on the server.
- Connect to the VPS over SSH. Check that tmux is installed. If it is not, install it using the package manager and instructions for your VPS’s Linux distribution; the exact command varies by distribution.
- Start a named session on the VPS:
tmux new -s youtube. - Start your streaming encoder from that session. Configure it with the YouTube Live server URL and stream key for the stream you created in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private: it is a credential that allows the encoder to send a feed to your stream.
- Detach without stopping the encoder: press
Ctrl+B, release both keys, then pressD. You should return to the VPS shell. - Disconnect SSH. The encoder process can continue inside the detached session.
- Reattach when you want to check it: SSH back into the same VPS and run
tmux attach -t youtube. Replaceyoutubeif you chose a different session name.
The tmux manual describes sessions as surviving accidental SSH disconnections and intentional detaching: tmux(1), Linux man-pages.
Set up and check the YouTube stream
Get the correct server URL and stream key
Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and enter its server URL and stream key in your encoder. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential used by the encoder to send the feed; treat it like a password. YouTube also allows a custom key to be reused. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube’s stream-key guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Preview before relying on it
Before an event or unattended run, preview the feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room and check stream health. YouTube recommends a reliable network and upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate. It also recommends testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and recommendations.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. Use codec, bitrate, resolution, and keyframe settings supported by your encoder and suitable for your available upload connection; consult YouTube’s settings guidance and your encoder’s documentation rather than assuming one configuration fits every stream.

What tmux protects—and what it does not
| Situation | What to expect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| SSH disconnects or you close the terminal | The encoder can continue if it was started inside the remote tmux session. | Reconnect to the same VPS and reattach with tmux attach -t youtube. |
| The encoder crashes | tmux preserves the terminal session; it does not restart the encoder. | Inspect the session output, diagnose the encoder, and configure and test a separate process supervisor if automatic restart is required. |
| The encoder loses its YouTube ingest connection | tmux does not ensure the encoder reconnects or that YouTube accepts a resumed feed. | Check encoder output and YouTube stream health. Test reconnection behavior before relying on it. |
| The VPS reboots, shuts down, or its host fails | A tmux session is not reboot recovery and cannot protect against server or host failure. | Configure and test startup and restart behavior for your VPS’s operating system if reboot recovery is needed. |
| YouTube stops receiving the encoder feed | YouTube says to end a stream, stop sending content from the encoder. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. | Plan encoder restarts around the stream’s state; do not assume the same live event will resume indefinitely. See YouTube’s encoder instructions. |
A process supervisor and tmux solve different problems: tmux handles terminal-session persistence and lets you inspect or reattach to output; a supervisor is a separate mechanism for process restart or startup after reboot. The right configuration depends on the VPS’s Linux distribution and should be tested on that server.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube loop without keeping an encoder process running on your VPS, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed. For Indian creators, UPI is supported.
