You can keep a YouTube stream live after shutting down your PC only if the encoder—the system sending video to YouTube—keeps running somewhere else. For prerecorded videos, a cloud streaming service can play the video continuously without relying on your home computer. Alternatively, use a separate always-on system. Turning off the only device encoding and uploading the stream will interrupt it.
Choose where the stream will run
For a 24/7 broadcast of prerecorded video, the most direct option is a cloud service that explicitly supports continuous YouTube streaming. Current India pricing and availability for Gyre, Upstream, and AWS Elemental MediaLive are not established here. Check directly with each provider before choosing. A UPS can help keep a running system powered during an outage, but it does not move encoding off a PC that you switch off.
Set up a YouTube stream with a separate encoder
These steps apply when an always-on computer or encoder will send the feed. A hosted service may use its own setup process, but it still needs an authorized YouTube connection.

- Confirm livestream eligibility. Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before you need to broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder or hosted service. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if it is exposed. YouTube’s setup guidance explains the stream-key connection.
- Load the source. For prerecorded playback, select or upload the video in the service that will play it. For a live event, configure the separate system to receive and encode the production feed. Verify the provider supports your specific source and YouTube workflow before relying on it.
- Choose compatible output settings. Use a supported encoder format and settings that match your source, service, and available upload connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported; its listed encoder options include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Test the bitrate rather than assuming a setting will work on every connection. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into playback formats for viewers. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
- Start early and check the preview. Start the encoder and verify that video and audio appear in the Live Control Room before relying on the stream. Test with representative motion and audio, review stream health, and monitor audio and picture quality. YouTube recommends advance testing; for professional events, test failover as well. - Plan for monitoring after shutdown. Decide who will notice a dropped feed and who can restart it. Moving the encoder off your PC removes dependence on that PC; it does not guarantee that every service or network will remain interruption-free.
Plan for long broadcasts and archives
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need an archive, do not assume a continuous stream will be saved: plan around that under-12-hour guidance and confirm the current behavior in YouTube Studio. YouTube encoder setup guidance.
Duration limits, archive behavior, and provider restarts are separate concerns. Restream’s help documentation says YouTube has no stream-duration limit but archives only streams under 12 hours; it also warns that Restream’s own server may be restarted during continuous streams longer than 24 hours. That is a Restream-specific caveat, not a statement about every provider. Check the selected service’s current restart and recovery behavior.

Check rights and monetization before looping content
Only broadcast prerecorded material for which you have the necessary rights. YouTube’s live-stream terms say providers represent that they have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live content and must comply with applicable laws and rules. The terms also state: “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” Read the current YouTube terms and applicable policies for your channel and content.
Keeping a stream live does not guarantee monetization. In a July 10, 2025 policy response, TeamYouTube clarified that mass-produced or repetitive material is included in the inauthentic-content policy and is ineligible for monetization. Replaying the same video continuously is not, by itself, evidence that a channel will qualify for monetization or earn more.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The stream ends when the PC shuts down: The encoder was running on that PC. Move the encoding or playback task to a supported cloud service or a separate system that stays on.
- The stream does not start: Check that livestreaming is enabled for the channel, then verify the stream URL and key in the encoder. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- The preview is missing or unstable: Confirm the encoder is running and connected, then check the source, upload connection, output settings, and Live Control Room stream health. Test before going live.
- Audio or video quality is poor: Check the source file and encoder output, then test settings and connection capacity with representative content. A bitrate that exceeds the available upload capacity can make delivery unreliable.
- The stream drops after a long run: Check the provider’s restart, recovery, and monitoring behavior. Do not assume that YouTube’s duration behavior describes the provider’s own server limits.
- The stream is not archived: Check its duration and YouTube’s current archive guidance; streams of 12 hours or more are not covered by YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule for streams shorter than 12 hours.
