Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If FFmpeg reaches the end of a single video and exits, add -stream_loop -1 before that input’s -i option. It tells FFmpeg to loop that input indefinitely. It does not, by itself, loop a multi-file playlist, restart a crashed process, or repair a broken YouTube connection.
First identify what “ran out of input files” means
The fix depends on whether the media ended, the playlist ended, FFmpeg failed, or YouTube stopped receiving a healthy feed. These are separate problems, and looping only addresses the first when the input is a loopable file.

- One file reached its end: loop that input with
-stream_loop -1. - A playlist ended: configure the playlist or concat workflow to continue, repeat, or move to a fallback. Looping one input does not necessarily repeat the playlist.
- FFmpeg exited with an error: inspect its exit status and logs. An input loop cannot recover from an encoder crash, invalid media, lost disk access, or a failed output connection.
- YouTube ingest is unhealthy: check the stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not assume an ingest error means the input reached EOF. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers stream setup and monitoring.
Loop one video file indefinitely
Place -stream_loop -1 before the -i for the input you want to repeat. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation specifies that options apply to the next input or output and reset between files; the option must therefore precede the relevant input. In the documentation, -1 means infinite input looping. FFmpeg command-line documentation

This is a structural example, not a ready-to-run command for every source. The codecs, bitrate, stream mapping, audio handling, output protocol, and ingest URL need to match your media and YouTube stream configuration. Check the option placement
This placement loops input.mp4:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 ...
Putting the option after -i input.mp4 does not apply it to that already-declared input. If your command has multiple inputs, place the option immediately before the -i for the file that should loop.
Expect the content to repeat
The command sends the same media again after it reaches the end. That is appropriate only if repeating the content is intentional. Watch both audio and video at the transition: a file’s timestamps, codecs, or other timing characteristics can make a loop boundary behave differently from the middle of playback. Test the exact file and FFmpeg build before using the command for a scheduled stream.

For playlists, loop or extend the playlist itself
A multi-file playlist is not the same as a single input. If the playlist runs out, attaching -stream_loop -1 to one input does not establish that the entire playlist repeats. Behavior depends on the demuxer and how the playlist or concat input is built; there is no one universal playlist command or guaranteed in-place reload procedure for every input type.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- If files should play in order repeatedly, configure the playlist workflow to repeat and test that its last item transitions to the intended first item.
- If more material should follow, make sure the workflow has a valid next item rather than assuming FFmpeg will discover files added later.
- If the main source can disappear or be replenished asynchronously, design and test a compatible fallback slate or loop. This requires process logic and compatible audio/video streams.
Monitor the output across the final-to-next-item transition. Do not infer that the playlist is healthy just because FFmpeg remains running.

Choose the right continuity strategy
| Approach | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Loop one input with -stream_loop -1 |
Repeating the same file is acceptable. | Simple to configure, but the repetition is audible or visible, and the input’s timing still needs validation. |
| Repeat a playlist or provide a next item | Several files should play in order. | Playlist and demuxer behavior varies; configure and test the playlist itself. |
| Send a fallback slate or loop | The primary feed may disappear or await new media. | More complex; requires compatible audio/video and process logic. |
These media strategies are distinct from process supervision. A supervisor can restart a failed FFmpeg process; input looping can keep a successfully running process from reaching EOF on a loopable input. If you need both, configure and test both.
Match the YouTube output settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS as streaming protocols and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Recommended bitrates vary by ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current YouTube table for your chosen output mode rather than treating one bitrate as universal. Use RTMPS when supported: YouTube describes it as an encrypted extension of RTMP. Keep the stream key private regardless of protocol. Before the event, test with audio and movement similar to what you intend to stream, then monitor stream health while live. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance
Plan separately for long-running streams
YouTube’s encoder setup help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive rule, not a promise that FFmpeg will run indefinitely or that YouTube will accept one uninterrupted feed without interruption. YouTube encoder setup
For a long-running broadcast, monitor FFmpeg’s exit status and logs as well as YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. If the host or process must recover from failure, add suitable supervision and alerting; a restart policy alone will not stop a finite input from reaching EOF again.
Troubleshoot a stream that still stops
- It stops at the file’s end: verify that
-stream_loop -1is before the correct-i. Test the file through a full loop and check for audio or video gaps at the boundary. - It stops after the last playlist item: configure the playlist or concat workflow to repeat, provide another item, or transition to a tested fallback. Do not assume a single-input loop repeats the playlist.
- FFmpeg terminates before EOF: inspect its exit code and logs for encoder, media, storage, or output errors. Input looping does not restart a failed process.
- FFmpeg is running but YouTube reports an issue: read the specific Live Control Room stream-health message and verify the configured output protocol, encoder settings, and private stream key.
- The stream appears to continue but the transition is broken: inspect the actual output at the loop or playlist boundary. Source timing or codec characteristics may need different handling.
- A long stream is not archived as expected: check the duration and YouTube’s archive guidance; automatic archiving is stated for streams under 12 hours, not as a guarantee about FFmpeg continuity.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want an always-on YouTube stream without leaving a computer at home running FFmpeg, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos and playlists. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud keeps it looping. Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not live camera feeds. Start the free first day.
