Run the encoder on the VPS inside a named tmux session, then detach from that session before closing SSH. The encoder continues running on the server, and you can reconnect later to inspect or control it. This protects against an SSH client disconnect—not an encoder crash, VPS reboot, or provider outage.
Start the encoder inside tmux on the VPS
The key detail is where the encoder runs: it must be running on the VPS, inside a tmux session created on that VPS. A tmux session on your laptop does not protect a process running in the laptop’s terminal, and it cannot keep a locally running encoder alive after you disconnect.

Connect to the VPS over SSH and check that
tmuxis installed. Install it using the package manager for your VPS operating system if it is not. The exact installation command depends on the operating system and distribution.Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Create a named session:
tmux new -s youtube-live. -
From the terminal inside that session, start your encoder with the YouTube server URL, stream key, and encoding settings. Keep the stream key private: avoid exposing it in public logs, shell history, screenshots, or shared command output where possible.

Once the encoder is running, detach from tmux by pressing Ctrl+b, then pressing d. This detaches your terminal without stopping the tmux session or the encoder.

You can now close SSH. The session remains on the VPS while the host and encoder process remain available.
The tmux manual describes sessions that persist through an accidental SSH disconnection or an intentional detach, and can be attached to again later: tmux manual and tmux getting started.

Connect the VPS encoder to YouTube
Get the ingest details from YouTube Studio
In YouTube Studio, create or select the stream in the Live Control Room and copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. The key is a credential as well as the address information YouTube uses to accept the encoder feed. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance, stream settings, and troubleshooting guidance.
Choose settings the encoder and VPS can sustain
Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends it as the secure extension of RTMP. YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingestion options, up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. The recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current YouTube encoder settings table for the configuration you select rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
The VPS’s outbound bandwidth must sustain the selected bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom between the stream’s total bitrate and available upload bandwidth. Check sustained throughput and network limits with your VPS provider; a speed test from your home connection does not establish what the VPS can send.

Test the full path before relying on it
Test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed in the Live Control Room preview, check stream health, and monitor it during the event. YouTube’s guidance on testing and available bandwidth is in its live-streaming tips.

SSH back into the same VPS account that created the session.

List available tmux sessions with
tmux ls. -
Reattach to the named session with
tmux attach -t youtube-live. You can inspect encoder output or interact with the process from its terminal.Rank #4

To end the stream intentionally, reattach and stop the encoder cleanly. Exit the session when you are finished.
Do not treat an SSH disconnect as an instruction to YouTube to end the event. YouTube’s encoder guidance says to stop sending content to end a stream, and streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Confirm the intended event lifecycle in Studio: YouTube encoder help.
Know which failures tmux does—and does not—handle

These are separate failure layers: tmux handles terminal detachment, a supervisor can handle process restart or boot-time launch, and the Live Control Room shows YouTube ingest status and stream configuration. None substitutes for the others.

Check YouTube channel eligibility before the first stream
YouTube says live streaming must be enabled, which may take up to 24 hours the first time. Its getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started help before scheduling a first broadcast.
