How to Keep a YouTube Livestream of a Radio Playlist Running from a VPS

Run FFmpeg on a Linux VPS to turn your authorized radio playlist into a continuous audio-and-video stream, then send it to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Use RTMPS where supported, supervise the encoder, and monitor YouTube’s Live Control Room: reconnect settings can help with some failures, but they do not guarantee an uninterrupted event or preserve playback position.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. If this is the channel’s first live stream, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-stream setup guide explains the encoder workflow.
  • A Linux VPS with enough storage for your playlist and stable outbound network capacity above the combined audio-and-video bitrate, plus overhead.
  • FFmpeg and a playlist of audio files you have the necessary rights to stream.
  • A video track. A radio audio feed alone is not enough for this workflow: pair the playlist audio with a still image or a simple visual loop, then verify the output in Live Control Room.

Keep your YouTube stream key private, as you would a password. Anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

Set up the YouTube broadcast

  1. Enable live streaming if necessary. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-stream setup flow and allow for activation time if this is your first broadcast.
  2. Create or open a stream. In YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup, retrieve the server URL and stream key for the encoder. YouTube’s exact interface can change; use the values shown for the stream you intend to run.
  3. Choose the stream lifecycle. Decide whether to use a scheduled stream or a persistent encoder workflow, and test how YouTube behaves when the encoder disconnects and reconnects. A restarted encoder does not necessarily resume the same event or playlist position.
  4. Set the stream’s visibility and metadata. Add an accurate title, description, and thumbnail, and select the intended visibility before going public.

Prepare the VPS and playlist

Install and stage files

Install FFmpeg using the package manager or trusted package source for your VPS distribution. Upload the audio files and any image or video visual to a directory with adequate disk space. Check that FFmpeg can read every file and that filenames and paths are handled safely; a missing or unreadable file can stop a playlist even when the network connection is healthy.

For an audio radio playlist, plan a continuous video source such as a still image. Confirm that the image or visual can be looped for the length of the broadcast. The encoder must produce both audio and video tracks; check the resulting preview and stream health rather than assuming that a successful FFmpeg process means YouTube is receiving a valid stream.

  • Multiple Playback Modes & Alarms: Supports alarm via favorite station, FM, or tone. Sleep timer, kitchen timer, podcast playback with resume function, and remote web control via Skytune website.

Build a playlist deliberately

Use an explicit playlist order and verify the paths before launch. Decide whether the playlist should repeat indefinitely or end, and test transitions and audio levels using representative files. If your station identification or announcements are part of the program, include them in files for which you have streaming rights. FFmpeg can loop inputs, but the particular playlist format and options depend on how the files are stored and ordered.

Configure the encoder for YouTube

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 for video; AAC or MP3 for audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate and 5 Mbps as the minimum; it recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio. These are YouTube-published settings, not a promise that a particular VPS connection can sustain them. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates.

  • Ingest: Use the RTMPS server URL when YouTube provides it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection.
  • Video: Choose an output resolution and frame rate appropriate to the visual and available VPS bandwidth. A static image does not require a high frame rate, but the output still needs a valid video stream.
  • Audio: Choose AAC or MP3 and configure a suitable stereo bitrate. YouTube’s published recommendation is 128 Kbps for stereo.
  • Keyframes and bitrate: Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. If using H.264 at 1080p30, use YouTube’s 14 Mbps recommendation as the video target, with 5 Mbps identified as the minimum.
  • Network headroom: Leave capacity for audio, protocol overhead, and fluctuations. An advertised VPS network rate does not establish sustained outbound throughput; test the actual stream and inspect YouTube’s health indicators.

YouTube’s ingest URL and key are specific to the stream setup. Insert the current values into your FFmpeg configuration without publishing them in scripts, logs, screenshots, or public repositories. The precise FFmpeg command depends on your playlist and visual inputs; verify its audio/video mapping, codecs, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, and RTMPS destination before relying on it.

Keep the process running and recover safely

Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor so that an unexpected exit can be detected and, where appropriate, restarted. FFmpeg documents reconnect options for specified network errors and end-of-file conditions; they can address some connection and input cases, but not an invalid stream key, a broken media source, or an ongoing VPS or YouTube outage. They also cannot ensure that YouTube keeps the same event alive or resumes at the previous playlist position. See FFmpeg protocol documentation for the scope of its reconnect options.

  • UPnP/DLNA & USB MEDIA PLAYBACK: Stream your digital audio collection from compatible NAS drives or PC media servers using UPnP/DLNA, or play locally stored music from a USB flash drive connected to the front-panel USB port.
  • Configure supervision with a deliberate restart policy and inspect service logs after any restart.
  • Test a forced network interruption, an encoder exit, and a playlist boundary before launch. Confirm whether YouTube accepts the reconnection and what viewers see.
  • Check that a restart will not unintentionally repeat, skip, or restart the playlist from the beginning.
  • Keep a recovery plan for rotated or revoked keys, missing files, disk exhaustion, and VPS maintenance.

Automatic restarts improve recovery from certain process failures; they are not an uptime guarantee. Monitor the YouTube side as well as the server.

Test and monitor the live stream

  1. Run a private or unlisted test with representative audio and video before public launch.
  2. Open YouTube Live Control Room and verify the preview, incoming audio/video, and stream health messages.
  3. Listen for clipping, silence, gaps, or unexpected levels; inspect the video track and confirm that the visual remains present.
  4. During operation, check both the VPS process/logs and YouTube’s dashboard if the stream stops or reports poor health.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an archive will be available for a longer broadcast. Consult YouTube’s live-stream guidance for its current setup and archive notes.

Clear music rights before broadcasting

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, interrupt it, or terminate it. A license alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights owner should add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and confirm that the rights owner has allowlisted your channel when applicable.

Which permissions apply depends on the playlist, the recordings and compositions, territories, and the relevant rights holders. Confirm the permissions for your repertoire and intended audience before going live; no single general license can be assumed to cover every playlist or territory.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no video or shows an invalid preview The encoder is sending audio without a usable video track, or the video input has failed. Confirm the video input and output mapping, then verify the preview and stream health in Live Control Room.
Stream health reports unstable or insufficient bitrate The VPS cannot sustain the selected video-plus-audio bitrate, or there is not enough network headroom. Check sustained outbound throughput and encoder bitrate; reduce output demands if necessary and test again.
Encoder cannot connect Incorrect or outdated server URL or stream key, an ingest connection issue, or unavailable network access. Copy the current URL and key from the intended YouTube stream, keep the key private, and inspect VPS logs and connectivity.
FFmpeg restarts but the broadcast does not recover as expected A reconnect option cannot resolve the underlying input, key, provider, or YouTube event problem. Check the FFmpeg exit reason, media inputs, key validity, and Live Control Room status; test the intended recovery path manually.
Playlist stops or skips files A missing or unreadable file, incorrect path/order, or an end-of-file behavior not configured for the intended loop. Validate every playlist path and boundary; test the full loop logic with the same files and permissions used in production.
Music stream is interrupted despite permission Content ID matching may interrupt licensed material if the channel is not allowlisted by the rights owner. Contact the rights owner to confirm channel allowlisting and investigate YouTube’s live-stream notice.
No archive appears for a long-running broadcast YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on automatic archiving for longer sessions; plan recording and retention separately if needed.

VPS versus a managed cloud stream

A VPS with FFmpeg gives a technical operator direct control over playlist inputs and process configuration, but you maintain the files, encoder, monitoring, and recovery. A managed continuous-stream service may handle more of that workflow, but capabilities, platform support, lifecycle behavior, and current pricing vary; verify that a service supports your specific audio playlist and YouTube requirements. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists cloud services including Gyre and Upstream, but that listing does not establish their current plans or playlist-specific behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It supports uploaded streams up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streaming of uploaded videos, not a camera broadcast. Start the free day on StreamNeo.

Cost and operating trade-offs

A self-managed VPS route means comparing the VPS plan’s recurring cost, storage, sustained egress limits, and administration time; those amounts depend on the provider and plan. Budget for monitoring and recovery work as well as hosting. A cloud service shifts some operations away from your server, but compare current pricing and confirm the playlist, quality, and recovery behavior you need before choosing. For the VPS method, the central trade-off is control versus ongoing responsibility: FFmpeg and YouTube document useful encoder and reconnect behavior, but neither removes the need to test and monitor the broadcast.
