Run your encoder inside a tmux session on the remote Linux host, then detach from that session before closing SSH. The encoder keeps running when the SSH connection ends, and you can reconnect to the same host and reattach to its terminal. This protects against an SSH disconnect only—not an encoder crash, host reboot, server termination, or network failure.
Keep the encoder running with tmux
Run these commands on the remote host, using the same account that will run the encoder. A tmux session started only on your laptop does not protect a process running on the remote host.

Connect to the remote host over SSH, then create or attach to a named tmux session:
tmux new-session -A -s youtube-liveThe

Start your encoder from the shell inside tmux. Configure it with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube supports encoder software and standalone hardware; the command and settings depend on the encoder you use.

Once the encoder is running, press Ctrl+b, release the keys, then press d. This detaches tmux without exiting the shell or stopping the encoder. You can now close SSH.

To check on the stream later, SSH back into the same host as the same user, list sessions, and reattach by exact name:

tmux list-sessions tmux attach-session -t '=youtube-live'The exact-name target avoids matching a similarly named session. To leave the encoder running again, detach with Ctrl+b, then d. Exiting the shell in the pane is not the same as detaching and may end the program and session.

What tmux protects—and what it does not
tmux separates the remote terminal session from the SSH client connection. If SSH drops while the host and encoder remain healthy, the encoder can keep running and you can later reconnect to its terminal.
It does not restart a crashed encoder, restore a terminated server, or survive a host reboot. Choose the process-management method according to the failure you need to recover from:

For a one-off background command where a terminal you can reattach to is unnecessary, a common pattern is:
nohup command > output.log 2>&1 &Replace command with your actual encoder invocation. This captures standard output and errors in output.log; it does not provide tmux-style interactive monitoring or automatic recovery. For crash recovery or reboot recovery, use a service manager or supervisor configured for your encoder, operating system, permissions, and deployment. There is no safe universal service definition without those details.

Connect the encoder to YouTube
In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key and enter them in your encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and says the RTMPS URL is available in Live Control Room. Use the URL and connection details YouTube provides for your stream. RTMPS secures the encoder-to-YouTube connection; it does not change whether the encoder process survives an SSH disconnect. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

First identify where the failure occurred: the encoder process may have exited, the remote machine may be unavailable, its outbound connection may have failed, or YouTube may no longer be receiving the feed. Reattaching to tmux helps you inspect the terminal, but it cannot restore a failed process or connection.
- SSH disconnected but the encoder is still running: reconnect to the same host and account, then use
tmux list-sessionsandtmux attach-session -t '=youtube-live'to inspect it. - The tmux session is missing: confirm you logged in to the same host and user account. If the host rebooted or the session ended, tmux alone cannot bring the encoder back; check host availability and your process-management setup.
- The session exists but the encoder stopped: inspect the terminal output for an error. A running tmux session does not imply that the program inside it is healthy. Restart manually or configure an appropriate supervisor if automatic restart is required.
- The encoder is running but YouTube reports a problem: check the encoder is current, review stream quality in the encoder, inspect errors in YouTube’s dashboard, check encoder CPU load, and test outbound internet connectivity. Follow YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance.
YouTube says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Its guidance also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior is separate from SSH persistence and does not mean a stream will continue after the encoder stops. See YouTube’s instructions for ending a live stream.
