How to Keep a YouTube Live Stream Active Between Playlist Videos

To keep a YouTube Live broadcast active between prerecorded videos, keep one continuous feed going from an encoder. Put the videos, transitions and any holding content in the encoder’s outgoing program; YouTube’s playlist Loop control repeats a viewer’s playlist, not a live broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how the live feed reaches YouTube.

What “playlist” means in a live stream

There are three separate controls that are easy to confuse:

  • YouTube playlist Loop: repeats playback for someone watching a regular YouTube playlist. It does not schedule videos into a live broadcast. YouTube playlist looping help.
  • Encoder program sequence: the encoder sends YouTube a live feed using the stream URL and key. The videos and any interstitials must be assembled in that feed. Create a live stream with an encoder.
  • Auto-start and auto-stop: YouTube stream settings for starting or stopping a stream; they do not insert content at file boundaries. Manage live stream settings.

Set up a continuous encoder feed

  1. Enable live streaming and create the event. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, then create or schedule an encoder stream. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the scheduled start. See encoder setup and live-streaming tips.
  2. Choose an encoder that can run your sequence. Confirm its current documentation supports the file sequencing, repeat behavior, transitions and unattended operation you need. YouTube’s general setup guide does not prescribe a universal playlist or gapless-transition setting. For a small sequence, a software encoder may be sufficient; a dedicated hardware encoder is an optional, more advanced route. YouTube lists verified encoders, including LiveU Solo, but says those products are not made by YouTube; check current model support and suitability rather than treating the listing as an endorsement.
  3. Connect the encoder securely. Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room into the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. See stream settings.
  4. Build one uninterrupted program. Arrange the prerecorded clips in the encoder or production system feeding it. At boundaries, use a transition, slate, holding image, black screen or suitable audio bed if needed. The goal is for the encoder to keep sending the composed output rather than stopping when one file ends. Test the chosen encoder’s behavior; YouTube does not specify a universal transition control.
  5. Check the feed before relying on it. Run the full sequence as a test, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and check playback on the watch page and a mobile device. Watch stream health and listen for missing or unexpectedly overlapping audio. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder 15 minutes before a scheduled event. See live-streaming tips and encoder settings.

Encoder settings and connection headroom

Use YouTube-supported encoder settings for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its streaming tips recommend upload bandwidth headroom of 20%. These are operational recommendations, not a guarantee that an unstable connection will remain live. See encoder settings and streaming tips.

Check upload capacity while the encoder is sending the actual program, not only when the connection is idle. Other traffic on the same connection can use bandwidth needed by the stream. If stream health degrades, reduce competing uploads or choose a lower supported output setting, then test again.

Copyright, archive and long-stream considerations

Only include video and audio you have the rights to use for a live broadcast. A playlist that works technically is not automatically cleared for streaming or monetization. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel policies before scheduling material; an encoder cannot prevent a rights claim or enforcement action.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder setup guidance. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR may be limited or unavailable. If an archive or rewind matters, plan the duration accordingly and verify the current behavior in YouTube’s DVR help.

Common problems and fixes

  • The broadcast ends as a clip finishes: the encoder may be stopping when its source file ends. Configure a continuous sequence or a holding source in the encoder, and test a file boundary before going live.
  • The viewer playlist repeats, but the live output does not: YouTube’s Loop control applies to ordinary playlist playback. Configure the encoder’s program sequence instead.
  • The preview is blank or the stream never appears: check that the encoder is sending to the correct server URL and that the stream key matches the event. Keep the key private and regenerate it if it may have been exposed.
  • Video or audio drops around transitions: inspect the source files and transition behavior in the encoder, then test the entire sequence. Use a slate or holding scene if a source change creates a gap.
  • Stream health warns of connection problems: check upload headroom and competing network traffic; YouTube recommends 20% headroom. Re-test with the intended output settings before depending on the connection unattended.
  • Live streaming is unavailable on a new setup: first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Enable the feature early rather than troubleshooting at airtime.
