Windows settings can reduce the chance that an update restarts your streaming PC at the wrong time, but they cannot guarantee a local YouTube stream will stay online through a restart. Set active hours to cover your broadcast, install pending updates and restart before going live when practical, and test a separate backup path if uninterrupted playback matters. For prerecorded or looped video, a cloud stream can remove the Windows PC from the streaming path entirely.
What Windows settings can—and cannot—do
Windows active hours tell the system when you usually use the PC and help prevent inconvenient restarts; they are not a lock that guarantees the computer will never restart during a stream. If Windows Update does restart the computer, an encoder running on that PC stops sending its feed until the machine and encoder are back up.
Plan updates before the broadcast rather than relying on a setting to protect a live event. Microsoft says updates that require a restart still need one, and users cannot stop updates entirely. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains the available scheduling and pause controls.
Prepare the Windows PC before going live
1. Check for pending updates and restart ahead of the stream
- Open Settings > Windows Update and review the update status.
- If updates are pending, install them and restart before the broadcast when practical.
- After restarting, open the encoder and verify that its scene, media, audio, stream destination and scheduled start still work.
- If an update cannot be completed before the event, avoid starting a long broadcast until you have a tested recovery plan.
2. Set active hours to cover the actual broadcast
- Windows 11: Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours, then choose automatic adjustment or set the hours manually.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Change active hours.
Choose a window that covers the hours the PC is streaming, including setup and planned wrap-up. Active hours lower the risk of a disruptive automatic restart; they do not prevent every restart.

3. Use Pause updates only as a temporary buffer
Windows 11 provides a date-based Pause updates control. Microsoft’s current guidance allows a pause of up to 35 days; updates resume after it expires. Use it only when you need a short buffer around a planned event, then return to updating Windows. It is not a permanent way to turn updates off.
4. Account for your Windows version
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. If the streaming PC still runs Windows 10, check its support and security situation and plan an upgrade or another supported arrangement rather than assuming it continues to receive free Windows Update security fixes. Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support notice gives the date.

Microsoft’s August 14, 2026 documentation describes a gradual “one restart a month” behavior for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H1, starting with updates released on and after July 28, 2026. It does not mean every PC is already on that rollout or that a stream PC will only ever restart once per month: Microsoft notes that some critical or expedited updates may install promptly and updates will not be held indefinitely. Keep active hours and restart planning in place. See Microsoft’s quality-update guidance for the documented behavior.
Set up and monitor the YouTube stream
Before the scheduled start
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the event and encoder configuration. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before relying on the public stream. Confirm the watch page shows the feed and check video, audio and stream health.
- Keep the encoder and Live Control Room accessible to whoever may need to recover the broadcast. The encoder sends video to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key; keep the key secure. YouTube documents how to reset a key if necessary.
During the broadcast, use Live Control Room’s stream status, error messages and real-time analytics, then verify viewer-facing playback after any recovery. Choose a backup that survives the Windows restart
Test a second encoder, not just the cable
A separate software or hardware encoder can provide another feed path, but failover is not automatic in every setup. YouTube recommends testing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking whether the player rolls over to the backup. Also test the specific failure you care about: restart the Windows streaming PC and verify that the backup starts and viewers continue to receive a feed. A cable-loss test alone does not prove restart recovery.
Assess whether the backup has independent power, a usable video source, its own configured encoder and enough upload capacity. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders and recommends professional-grade hardware for higher-production events; buying a hardware encoder does not itself resolve Windows Update interruptions or guarantee uptime. Check upload bandwidth before adding a second feed
YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom in available upload bandwidth. For backup capacity, its guidance is to allow for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate plus 20%. If both encoders share a constrained upstream connection, the second feed may make the connection less reliable rather than more resilient. Measure the available upload capacity under the conditions in which you will stream, then test both feeds together.
Know what a 24/7 YouTube event does not promise
A continuous live feed, its archive and its rewind window are separate things. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; its encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single 24/7 event will create a complete automatic archive or unlimited rewind. See YouTube Help: DVR on live streams.
