What a 24/7 prerecorded WoW livestream actually is
An uploaded video or YouTube playlist is not, by itself, a live broadcast. A live stream requires a continuous audio/video feed from an encoder. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. The channel must also follow YouTube policies. Resolve strikes, age restrictions, or other account limitations before investing time in encoding a large library.

YouTube documents a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key. Those limits matter if you plan separate channels, language feeds, or several WoW categories. Keep a written map of which broadcast and stream key belong to each encoder so that a restart cannot accidentally connect the wrong feed.
Create the broadcast
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and choose either a scheduled broadcast or an immediate stream.
- Set the title, visibility, category, description, and thumbnail. Make it clear that the program is prerecorded gameplay if that is how the channel operates.
- Copy the generated stream key into a password manager or other protected location. Treat it like a password; anyone who obtains it can send video to your broadcast.
- Leave the control-room preview open during the first test. Do not assume that a running encoder process means YouTube is receiving a valid feed.
Prepare a WoW video library that can run unattended
Audit ownership and permissions
List every element in every file: gameplay capture, background music, voice recordings, sound effects, images, alerts, logos, and overlays. Owning World of Warcraft does not automatically give you rights to a soundtrack or third-party asset included in an edited video. Keep licenses, permissions, and receipts in a folder that another moderator can inspect.
Normalize and test the files
- Use a consistent frame size, frame rate, orientation, and audio channel layout where practical. Mixed formats can create pauses or encoder errors at file boundaries.
- Normalize dialogue and music so a transition does not jump from very quiet to painfully loud.
- Remove clips whose rights are uncertain instead of hoping that a short excerpt will be ignored.
- Watch the first and last minute of each file. Trim dead air, accidental desktop capture, private information, and unfinished recordings.
- Decide whether the playlist needs a short transition, station-identification slate, or silence between episodes. Test that element as a real media file in the same encoder.
Design the playlist for continuity
Use a deterministic order for long-form progression and a separate randomised list only when variety is more important than chronology. Keep a copy of the playlist manifest outside the encoder host. If a file is replaced, record the new filename and rights status so that a recovery operator can rebuild the queue.
Choose how the encoder will stay online
There are two practical architectures: run the encoder on a local machine or have a cloud host run it. A local setup keeps media and control in your hands, but the computer, storage, power, operating system, and home internet must remain healthy. Cloud hosting avoids leaving that machine powered on, but you must upload media and depend on the provider’s service and support.

Local hosting: when it makes sense
A local encoder is useful when your library is large, your upload connection is metered, or you need direct access to custom filters and logs. Place the machine on reliable power, disable sleep and hibernation, and use wired networking where possible. Schedule operating-system updates rather than allowing an overnight reboot to end the broadcast. Keep enough free disk space for the source files, temporary transcodes, and logs.
Cloud hosting: what changes
A cloud encoder can continue while your laptop is closed or your home connection is unavailable. You trade local control and privacy for upload time, recurring charges, and dependence on the provider’s storage and process supervision. Confirm how the service handles a missing file, a YouTube disconnect, a full storage quota, and a failed restart before committing your channel to it.
DIY method: run the 24/7 stream from your own computer
- Verify the channel. Complete YouTube verification and confirm that no live-stream restriction has been applied in the last 90 days.
- Create and secure the broadcast. In Live Control Room, create the event, copy its stream key, and store the key securely. Use a separate key for each independent feed when your operating plan requires it.
- Build the playlist. Add only files whose gameplay, music, voices, graphics, and overlays you can document. Put the files in the exact order the encoder should play them and include any slate or transition clips.
- Install and configure an encoder. Select the playlist source, set the YouTube ingest destination, and paste the stream key. Configure one continuous program output rather than starting a new broadcast for every file.
- Set a sustainable output. Choose a resolution and frame rate your source files and upload connection can maintain for hours. Use constant, predictable audio and video settings across the playlist where possible. If the encoder offers a keyframe or GOP interval, target about two seconds; YouTube’s DASH guidance describes a target near two seconds and less than eight seconds.
- Start the encoder and watch the preview. Confirm that YouTube reports a healthy incoming signal, audio meters move, and the picture is not cropped, frozen, or silently black. Leave the preview running through a file boundary.
- Verify the loop. Let at least two files finish. Confirm that the next file starts without the encoder process exiting and that the broadcast remains the same live event.
- Harden the computer. Disable sleep, hibernation, automatic restart, and bandwidth-heavy background jobs. Use a UPS if a short power interruption is common. Give the encoder account read access only to the media directories it needs.
- Document a restart. Write down the order for restarting the encoder, checking the preview, and reconnecting the same broadcast. Keep a second copy of the playlist and stream-key instructions for an authorised operator.
Protocol and encoding details that affect reliability
For protocol-level implementations, YouTube’s HLS guidance expects HTTPS, media playlists, segments, and muxed audio and video. Its DASH guidance likewise expects multiplexed tracks and timely manifest updates. DASH manifests should be updated at least every 60 seconds, and the keyframe target is about two seconds, less than eight seconds. These requirements matter when you are writing or configuring a custom packager; a normal encoder may expose them as keyframe, GOP, segment, and playlist settings.
Do not choose a bitrate merely because a file played correctly on your local machine. Measure the sustained upload capacity from the actual host, leave headroom for protocol overhead and other traffic, and test the longest high-motion WoW scene. A feed that barely fits at noon can fail when another device starts a download. Keep audio and video muxed in the outgoing feed and watch encoder logs for dropped frames, reconnect loops, or timestamp errors.

Copyright and YouTube policy controls
YouTube scans every live stream for matches to third-party content, including another copyrighted live broadcast. If protected material remains, YouTube can temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A license does not always prevent an interruption: the rights owner may still need to place your channel on a Content ID allowlist.
Build a rights checklist for WoW footage
- Identify who recorded each gameplay segment and retain permission when someone else supplied it.
- List every music track, including menu music, raid ambience, and music captured from another application.
- Clear voice clips, memes, soundboards, reaction inserts, images, fonts, alerts, and animated overlays.
- Record license scope, territory, duration, attribution requirements, and any Content ID allowlist instruction.
- Keep an evidence folder linked to the filename used in the playlist. When a claim arrives, you should be able to remove one file instead of taking down the entire channel.
Run a private or unlisted test long enough to expose a claim before making the channel public. A clean test is not a permanent guarantee; rights databases and reference files can change, so continue monitoring after launch.
Monitoring and recovery for an unattended channel
A 24/7 stream needs an owner on call. Check the YouTube Live Control Room, encoder health, host reachability, storage, and copyright notices on a schedule. Record the expected playlist position so that a restart does not unexpectedly repeat or skip a major event.

Define failure branches before launch
- Encoder stopped: restart the process, confirm the playlist path, and inspect the last log lines for a missing file or decoder error.
- Internet outage: verify that the host can reach other sites, then restart the encoder only after the connection is stable. Avoid repeated rapid reconnects that can create several competing sessions.
- YouTube disconnect: check the broadcast status and reconnect the encoder to the existing event. Create a new broadcast only when the original event cannot be recovered.
- Copyright interruption: stop the offending file, preserve the notice, and replace or obtain permission before resuming. Do not simply loop the same claimed segment.
- Power or operating-system restart: configure the encoder to launch at boot, but still require a human to verify the YouTube preview and privacy setting.
Use alerts that reach a person rather than relying on a dashboard that nobody watches. A short test outage should prove that the alert fires, the operator can reach the host, and the documented restart returns a valid picture and audio feed.

Plan capacity, staffing, and growth
One long stream is simpler than several parallel feeds. If you add a second language, class, or expansion stream, account for YouTube’s 10-active-stream-per-channel and three-active-stream-per-key limits, separate playlist ownership, and separate monitoring. A local setup multiplies hardware and internet requirements; a cloud setup multiplies storage and service slots.
Calculate the total cost over the period you actually expect to run. Local hosting includes hardware replacement, electricity, connectivity, backup storage, and the time required to respond to failures. Cloud hosting converts much of that into a recurring charge and an upload step. Frequently Asked Questions
Does scheduling a YouTube broadcast start the prerecorded video by itself?
No. Scheduling creates the YouTube event, but an encoder still has to send a continuous audio/video feed to that event. The broadcast remains idle until the encoder connects.
Can I reuse one stream key for several WoW channels?
YouTube’s current guidance allows up to three active streams per stream key and 10 active streams per channel. Keep keys and broadcast assignments documented so simultaneous encoders do not collide.
What should I do if a licensed song still triggers Content ID during the live stream?
Preserve the license evidence and the YouTube notice, then ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist if required. Remove or replace the track before resuming the unattended loop.
