Yes—you can keep a VTuber YouTube channel live around the clock with prerecorded programs. An encoder sends your video files to a YouTube Live stream as a continuous feed. The practical choice is between running OBS on a computer, using dedicated encoding hardware, or putting the playlist in a cloud service. This guide shows the complete local setup, the settings and operating practices that prevent common failures, the copyright and monetization risks, and a cloud alternative for channels that cannot leave a computer running.
What a 24/7 prerecorded VTuber stream actually is
A prerecorded stream is still delivered through YouTube Live: your encoder reads a video file or playlist, converts it into a digital stream, and sends that stream to YouTube. YouTube describes the role plainly: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” Viewers see a live player, live-chat features (when enabled), and your channel’s live status even though the program was recorded earlier.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The encoder does not create rights for the material. You remain responsible for the VTuber model, animation, voice performances, music, gameplay footage, artwork, alerts, and every other element in the program. A loop can be technically live while still creating copyright, Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, or monetization problems if the material is not cleared or the presentation offers little original value.
Choose how the channel will run
There is no universal best architecture. Decide who should own the failure points: a local computer, a dedicated appliance, or a cloud operator. In every case, test a complete program before advertising the channel as always on.

| 1. StreamNeo | Always-on YouTube streaming from the cloud; upload a recording or playlist, add the stream key once, and start the stream. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps is sent without re-encoding, at one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card. | Recurring slot cost and dependence on the service. You still need to supply rights-cleared videos and monitor the YouTube channel. |
| OBS Studio on a computer | Free, open-source software with detailed scene, source, audio, and file-level control. A Windows, macOS, or Linux machine can combine VTuber footage, chat, alerts, schedules, and fallback graphics. | The computer, storage, operating system, power, and internet connection are all part of the uptime chain. A crash, update, disk failure, or home-network outage can end the stream. |
| Dedicated hardware encoder | Separates streaming from a general-purpose desktop and can be appropriate for a fixed installation. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K as a hardware option with direct YouTube streaming. | Up-front hardware cost, less flexible scene management than a full computer, and a separate need for reliable media playback and failover. |
| Other cloud services | YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists Gyre, StreamPush, and Upstream. The directory describes Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streams and Upstream as a service that can schedule prerecorded videos without keeping a creator’s computer online. | Pricing, regional availability, uptime commitments, storage limits, and partner terms can change; verify them directly before choosing. |
Why StreamNeo is first to consider: it keeps the YouTube stream running from the cloud, accepts any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives one free day without a card.
Prepare the prerecorded VTuber program
Clear every element before you upload
- Confirm that you own or have licensed the VTuber model, animation, voice, music, sound effects, background art, gameplay clips, and overlays.
- Check music licenses for public performance and YouTube use, not merely personal listening. Keep receipts, contracts, and attribution requirements in a folder that the channel team can access.
- Review sponsored, fan-submitted, or commissioned assets for restrictions on commercial use, modification, or redistribution.
- Remove material that could breach YouTube Community Guidelines or another party’s privacy, trademark, or publicity rights.
Design for a continuous program
Export complete segments with a clear beginning and end. A short slate between programs can tell viewers what is playing, display the schedule, or explain that the channel is broadcasting an archive. Include a fallback slate or low-motion loop for moments when a source file is missing. Keep audio levels consistent between episodes; a silent file or a clipped transition is easy to miss when no one is watching the encoder continuously.
Use filenames that sort predictably, such as a date, series name, and sequence number. Keep a manifest of the intended order. That makes it possible to rebuild a playlist after a disk replacement or a cloud re-upload without guessing which episode should play next.

Run the stream locally with OBS Studio
OBS Studio is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The following procedure uses a single file first, then a VLC playlist for rotation. The labels below are the OBS source names documented for these jobs; exact window positions can vary by operating-system version.
1. Install and make a test profile
- Install OBS Studio on the computer that will remain powered and connected.
- Open OBS and create a dedicated scene collection or profile for the 24/7 channel. Keeping it separate from a gaming or recording profile prevents accidental changes to the live output.
- Before connecting YouTube, add your media and confirm that the preview shows the correct aspect ratio, frame rate, overlays, and audio meters.
2. Add one prerecorded file
- In the Sources box, select + and choose Media Source.
- Give the source a descriptive name, select the video file, and enable Loop. OBS documents Media Source support for common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, plus common audio formats.
- Choose whether the source should restart when the scene becomes active. For a channel that returns to the same scene after a failure, restarting is usually more predictable than resuming at an unknown position.
- Watch the preview through one complete file. Confirm that the last frames do not leave a frozen image, black screen, or silent gap before the loop begins again.
3. Build a rotating playlist with VLC
- Install VLC on the streaming computer.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source rather than a single Media Source.
- Add the approved files in the order you want them played. OBS documents that this source supports playlists and looping.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then play through the transition from one file to the next. Remove any file that produces an unsupported codec, missing audio, or a long unplanned pause.
- Save the scene collection and export a copy of the playlist or keep the source files in a known folder. A playlist that points to a removable drive will fail when that drive is disconnected.
4. Add VTuber presentation layers
- Avatar footage: place the prerecorded performance at the base of the scene and scale it without cropping important expressions or subtitles.
- Chat and alerts: add browser-based or graphic elements only after testing that they do not cover captions or introduce unlicensed media.
- Schedule panel: show the current show, upcoming segment, and a timezone or “times are approximate” note when the playlist crosses regions.
- Now-playing text: update it per file or use a neutral label if automation is not available. Do not promise a segment is live-recorded when it is an archive.
- Fallback slate: create a separate scene with a message, channel branding, and quiet background audio or silence. It is safer than exposing a desktop, error dialog, or private file path during recovery.
5. Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live.
- Create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room. Set the title, description, visibility, category, and chat moderation controls before sending viewers to the URL.
- Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select the YouTube service or the appropriate custom service field, and paste the values exactly.
- Treat the stream key as a credential. Do not publish it in a scene, screenshot, public document, or chat message. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Start streaming in OBS, then confirm in Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving a stable preview. Start the public stream only after the preview is clean.
First-time live-stream enablement on YouTube may take up to 24 hours. Complete that activation well before a scheduled launch, and allow time for a private test.

Encoder settings that affect picture and sound
The right values depend on your source resolution, frame rate, encoder, and the current YouTube requirements for the selected format. Do not force a 4K output from a 1080p recording or select a frame rate that the source does not contain.
- Output resolution: match the program’s native dimensions when possible. Scaling adds load and can soften text or the avatar’s facial details.
- Frame rate: keep it consistent with the source. A mismatched rate can create judder or duplicated frames during long playback.
- Video bitrate: choose a stable value within YouTube’s current guidance for the resolution and frame rate. A value that exceeds the home upload connection causes dropped frames; a value that is too low produces blocky motion.
- Keyframe interval: use the interval required by YouTube’s current encoder guidance and keep it consistent. Keyframes help the service recover and make seeking practical; changing the interval midstream is not a fix for an unstable connection.
- Rate control and profile: use the encoder mode and codec combination supported by your hardware and YouTube’s current recommendations. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU use, while software encoding may offer different quality and compatibility.
- Audio sample rate and channels: keep the project, source files, and encoder consistent. Watch the meters for clipping and verify that a file with no audio does not mute the entire scene unexpectedly.
Record a short local test while streaming privately. Inspect fast avatar movement, scrolling chat, fades to black, and quiet dialogue. A settings screen that looks correct on a still preview can still reveal dropped frames or audio drift after several minutes.

Make a local setup survive the night
Remove avoidable single points of failure
- Disable sleep, hibernation, and automatic shutdown on the streaming computer. Schedule operating-system updates outside the broadcast window and reboot deliberately.
- Use a wired network connection when practical. If Wi-Fi is unavoidable, place the computer where signal strength is stable and test at the times the channel normally runs.
- Keep the media on a local drive with free space. Do not rely on a USB disk that can disconnect or a network share that can disappear during a router restart.
- Protect the computer and network equipment against brief power interruptions with suitable backup power. A backup does not replace a recovery plan.
- Keep a second machine or a documented restore procedure if the channel’s availability requirement is strict.
Monitor the signals that matter
Check OBS CPU and GPU load, dropped frames, encoder health, audio continuity, disk space, and internet uptime. Also watch YouTube Live Control Room for ingest warnings and the public player from a separate device. A local preview can keep playing while the upload has already stopped.
Automate recovery, then test it
Configure OBS or the operating system to restart after a crash, and keep a fallback scene ready. If you use a second machine, document exactly when it takes over and how its stream key is managed. Simulate a failed file, a disconnected network cable, and an OBS restart during an unlisted test. Automation reduces recovery time; it is not a guarantee that YouTube will remain live without supervision.
Understand YouTube archives and long sessions
YouTube’s encoder instructions state: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” A single 24/7 session therefore should not be treated as one reliably preserved VOD. If archives, moderation, or chaptering matter, plan controlled restarts or segmented sessions under that limit. Announce the transition in the schedule and use a fallback slate while the next session is created and verified.

Segmentation also gives you manageable records for rights checks and takedown requests. Keep the stream titles and descriptions accurate for each segment; do not imply that an old recording is a live performance happening at that moment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCopyright, reused material, and monetization
Ownership is necessary but not sufficient
Use only footage, voice performances, music, artwork, models, and overlays for which the channel has the necessary rights. Owning the VTuber character does not automatically license a song in the background, a game soundtrack, a fan animation, or a commissioned overlay. A rights holder can still claim or block material that you believed was harmless.
Know the inauthentic-content policy
On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” to inauthentic content and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible for monetization. A looped archive should therefore add original presentation, meaningful programming variation, and viewer value. A minimally changed loop is not automatically monetizable simply because you own the files.
YouTube’s monetization policy also requires compliance with Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, copyright and rights-clearance obligations, and the applicable program policies. Keep records showing what you changed, produced, or licensed, and be prepared for a human review rather than assuming that a live badge proves eligibility.
Troubleshooting a prerecorded 24/7 stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming feed | Wrong server URL or stream key, stream not started in OBS, or live activation is still pending. | Re-copy both values from Live Control Room, confirm OBS is streaming, and complete first-time activation in advance; YouTube says that activation can take up to 24 hours. |
| Video plays locally but YouTube drops frames | Upload capacity is below the selected bitrate, or another device is consuming the connection. | Measure sustained upload capacity, lower output demands within YouTube’s current guidance, stop competing uploads, and prefer wired networking. |
| Black screen after an episode ends | Media Source loop is off, the VLC playlist is not looping, or the next file is missing. | Enable Loop for a single Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC, verify every file path, and test the transition before going public. |
| Audio disappears between programs | The next file has no audio, source monitoring is inconsistent, or levels are muted in the scene. | Inspect each file, watch OBS meters through the transition, and provide intentional silence or approved background audio instead of an accidental mute. |
| Avatar motion looks jerky | Frame-rate mismatch, overloaded encoder, or scaling during output. | Match output frame rate to the source, reduce unnecessary scaling, and lower CPU/GPU load before changing bitrate. |
| OBS crashes overnight | Operating-system update, unstable plugin, thermal issue, insufficient resources, or a damaged media file. | Review logs, update during a maintenance window, remove unneeded sources, test files individually, and configure restart automation or a backup machine. |
| Stream stops after a YouTube interruption | Encoder did not reconnect or the session was ended during recovery. | Enable restart/reconnect behavior, keep a fallback slate, monitor the public player, and perform a controlled restart when YouTube does not recover. |
| Monetization is rejected | Rights are incomplete or the channel is judged repetitive, mass-produced, or inauthentic. | Audit every asset, add meaningful original programming and variation, retain clearance records, and follow the current monetization policy rather than relying on a live label. |
Cost and operational trade-offs
- OBS: the software is free, but the real cost is the computer, electricity, storage, internet service, maintenance, monitoring, and the time required to recover failures.
- Hardware encoding: requires an upfront appliance purchase and still needs media playback, networking, power, and a recovery plan.
- Cloud hosting: adds a recurring charge but removes the requirement that your home computer remain powered and connected. Compare the provider’s storage, recovery behavior, regional availability, and terms before committing.
Calculate the complete cost over the period you plan to operate: equipment and power for local streaming versus the subscription, uploads, and storage of a cloud service. A cheap setup that fails during every router reboot is not cheaper if the channel’s purpose depends on continuity.

A practical launch checklist
- Rights for every video, audio track, model, overlay, and artwork are documented.
- Playlist order, filenames, and fallback content have been tested from start to finish.
- Output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio behavior match the source and current YouTube guidance.
- YouTube live streaming is enabled, and the stream key is stored privately.
- A private or unlisted test has run long enough to reveal transitions, dropped frames, audio drift, and reconnect behavior.
- Monitoring covers the encoder, network, storage, YouTube ingest, and the public player.
- There is a restart, backup-machine, or cloud recovery plan, with a person responsible for alerts.
- Archive segmentation is planned because YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, not an unbounded 24/7 session.
- The program adds original presentation and meaningful variation instead of relying on a minimally changed loop for monetization.
