To keep a VLC-based YouTube stream playing through a power cut, back up power for every local device it depends on: the computer running VLC, the router and modem or other internet equipment, and a display if the setup needs one. Size the UPS or inverter for the combined load and the runtime you need. This protects your equipment from a local power cut; it cannot keep the stream online if your internet service also fails.
What must stay powered
Trace the full path from the video to the internet. A computer running VLC needs power, and so does the network equipment providing its connection. If the computer or setup requires a monitor to operate or recover, include that too.

- The computer or other device playing the video in VLC.
- The modem, router, or other network terminal equipment needed for internet access.
- A display, if it is needed for the playback setup.

1. Find the connected load
List the devices that must remain on and find each device’s rated or measured wattage. Add the wattages to estimate the combined load. Eaton recommends using device wattage when determining the load a UPS must support; APC advises not exceeding either the UPS’s watt rating or its VA rating. Watts and VA are related but different limits: APC describes their ratio as the power factor. Check both ratings for the specific backup unit and the equipment connected to it. 2. Check runtime at that load
Choose a unit whose output supports the combined load and whose battery runtime suits the outage you want to bridge. Consult the manufacturer’s runtime chart or load-specific estimate for that model; VA alone does not tell you how long the system will run. More connected equipment means less runtime, as APC notes in its UPS Buying Guide.
3. Confirm outlets and battery details
Check the exact unit’s instructions and outlet labels. Plug the computer and networking equipment into battery-backed outlets, not outlets that provide surge protection only. Verify the supported battery type, included capacity, expansion limits, and the outlet types needed by your devices. Availability, electrical standards, and outlet configurations depend on your country and the specific model.

Connect and test the setup
- Connect the backup unit to mains power according to its manual and allow it to charge as directed. Eaton says its desktop UPS systems are designed to remain plugged in so the battery stays charged and ready; follow the instructions for your own unit rather than assuming the same guidance applies to every inverter.
- Connect the required devices to battery-backed outlets: the VLC playback device, router, modem or other network equipment, and any necessary display.
- Confirm VLC playback before an outage. VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 desktop documentation gives the general network-stream path: Media > Open Network Stream, enter a network URL, then select Play. That guidance does not specifically establish that a YouTube page URL works with every current VLC version or platform. Check playback on your installed version and with the URL you intend to use; do not assume compatibility from the general network-stream instructions. See VLC’s network-stream documentation.
- Test loss of mains power safely. With playback running, follow the backup unit’s instructions to simulate a power cut. Check that the computer, network equipment, and stream continue operating, and observe how long the arrangement lasts. This test is a practical check of your own equipment, not a guarantee of future runtime.
What an inverter cannot protect against
Battery backup preserves local power; it does not restore an internet connection that has failed. Your ISP’s equipment or the wider network may also lose power during an outage. Check with your provider or test your connection during a suitable outage before relying on it. A running computer and router alone do not prove that the upstream service will remain available.
