How to Keep a Robot Lawn Mower From Getting Stuck or Missing Patches

The fastest fix is to diagnose the pattern at the place it occurs. If the mower repeatedly misses the same area, check its schedule, coverage settings and map. If it stops in one spot, inspect that spot for furniture, tight passages, tangled grass or a boundary problem. A loop-signal alert points to the wired installation; a blocked-wheel or cutting-system alert calls for a powered-down inspection using the mower’s own manual.

Start with the symptom, not a random adjustment

Record the exact app or display message, where the mower stopped, and whether the problem occurs every time. The same visible result—an uncut patch—can come from an inactive work area, an obstacle, an incorrectly installed boundary, or a mower that cannot move freely. Changing several settings at once makes the real cause harder to identify.

When the mower misses parts of the lawn

Check work areas and schedules first

A boundary-wire mower can cut only the work areas that its configuration and schedule make available. Compare the lawn’s physical installation with the coverage settings in the mower’s app or control panel. Confirm that the relevant schedule is enabled and that the mower is permitted to work during the times you expect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Husqvarna’s guidance for its boundary-wire installations specifically calls out coverage settings and installation checks. It also notes that disabling the My Lawn schedule can leave only separately scheduled work areas being cut. That behavior belongs to the relevant Husqvarna systems; other manufacturers use different names and rules, so do not assume their menu structure or scheduling logic is identical.

Do not treat every visible map gap as the cause

Some systems show a virtual map that does not represent every part of the mower’s actual cutting behavior. Husqvarna’s related support guidance says an incomplete visible map does not necessarily prevent the mower from cutting the whole lawn when it is following the My Lawn schedule. Check the active schedule and coverage mode before rebuilding a map.

Check whether the patch is physically reachable

Trace the route from the charging station to the missed area. A passage may be too narrow for the mower to enter reliably, or an object may have shifted into the route. Look for garden furniture, raised edging, roots, low branches, toys, hoses and temporary items. A mower may reach a patch occasionally yet miss it on other runs if its approach angle changes.

If the same area remains unreachable after schedule and coverage checks, consult the installation instructions for your exact model. Boundary-wire systems, virtual-boundary systems and satellite-assisted systems have different rules for passages, islands and slopes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check mowing coverage over more than one run

Random-pattern mowers do not necessarily visit every part of the lawn during one session. If a patch is occasionally missed but is reached on later runs, first confirm that the schedule allows enough operating time and that the mower is not spending excessive time returning to charge. A patch that is missed on every run is a stronger sign of a configuration, access or boundary issue than a patch missed once.

Stop errors caused by obstacles and trapped locations

Inspect the exact stopping point

When the mower reports that it is trapped, do not start by changing the whole map. Walk to the stopping location and look at the mower’s height and wheel path. Outdoor furniture is one documented cause of a trapped error. Other practical checks include:

  • Planters, raised borders or stones that leave too little clearance for a wheel.
  • Roots, ruts or soft ground that allow one drive wheel to spin.
  • Low objects that the mower can approach but cannot pass beneath.
  • Narrow corridors where the mower cannot turn or correct its heading.
  • Grass, twigs or other debris caught around a wheel or the cutting system.

Remove a movable object and observe the next run. If the object must stay, create an exclusion using the method supported by your mower instead of repeatedly rescuing the machine.

Use permanent islands for permanent no-mow areas

Flower beds, rockeries, ponds and fixed furniture should be represented as permanent exclusions. Husqvarna describes boundary-wire islands for areas the mower should avoid. On supported Landroid installations, Worx describes islands for permanent exclusions and an Off Limits accessory for seasonal items such as lawn furniture and planters.

The accessory is not a universal solution. It applies only to compatible installations and models, and availability or operation can vary by region. An exclusion accessory cannot correct an inactive schedule, an incomplete coverage configuration or a blocked drive wheel.

Separate temporary and permanent obstacles

For a temporary item, remove it before a mowing session when possible. For a recurring seasonal item, use the model’s supported temporary-exclusion method and verify that the exclusion is active. For a permanent bed or structure, install or edit the permanent island according to the exact boundary or virtual-map instructions.

Check the approach, not only the obstacle

A mower can become trapped because it reaches an object at an angle that leaves one wheel against an edge. Watch one complete approach if it is safe to do so. Note whether the machine reverses, pivots repeatedly or spins one wheel. That observation helps distinguish a clearance problem from a traction problem and gives an installer a useful description.

Understand “outside work area” and boundary-placement errors

What the message usually indicates

An outside-work-area error means the mower’s loop signal or boundary interpretation indicates that it is outside the permitted work area. Husqvarna’s UK troubleshooting guidance lists boundary-wire placement too close to a slope or obstacle as one possible cause. It gives a normal minimum margin of 35 cm in that context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 35 cm figure is Husqvarna guidance for that troubleshooting situation, not an industry-wide rule. Boundary distance depends on the mower, installation method, edge type, slope and manufacturer instructions. Use the exact manual for your model before moving wire.

Compare the installation with its original plan

If you have an installation map or photographs, compare them with the current lawn. Look for wire that has been moved during edging, aeration, planting or construction. Check points where the loop passes near a slope, wall, fence, tree root or other obstacle. A small relocation can change how the mower enters a passage or interprets the edge.

Do not create a new island or reroute the entire boundary merely because one patch is missed. First establish whether the symptom is an outside-area error, a schedule problem or a physical obstruction.

Wired and virtual installations need different checks

On a wired installation, inspect the physical loop and its station connection when the mower reports a loop fault. On a virtual-boundary or satellite installation, inspect the mapped boundary, positioning conditions and software status instead. A boundary-wire detector cannot diagnose a satellite reception problem, and editing a virtual map cannot repair a severed buried wire.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find and repair a suspected broken boundary wire

Confirm the wiring symptom

For a wired system, a blue flashing light at the charging station together with a no-loop-signal alert can indicate a broken boundary wire. Check the mower’s message and station indicator before buying parts or digging up the lawn. A settings problem will not be fixed by replacing wire.

Use the installation map and a detector

Start with the original wire layout, if available, and identify the likely loop sections. Husqvarna says a wire-break detector can save time when locating a suspected break. Follow the detector’s instructions and mark the section before exposing soil or turf.

Make the repair safely and protect it

Use the repair method and connectors specified for your mower’s installation. After the loop is restored, Husqvarna advises securing or burying exposed wire and couplers as appropriate. Leave the repaired section protected from normal mowing, edging and foot traffic, then verify that the station returns to its normal signal state and that the mower can leave the station.

Additional boundary wire and repair couplers are appropriate only after physical wire damage is confirmed. Worx’s support material names 20 AWG stranded low-voltage wire for its own support context; that specification should not be treated as universal. Wire gauge, insulation, connector type and installation depth are model- and system-specific.

Common causes of a new wire break

Recent edging, digging, aeration, planting or construction can damage a loop that worked previously. Photograph the wire route and station connections after any repair so a later fault can be narrowed quickly. Do not assume a mower that misses one area has a broken loop unless the station indicator and mower alert support that diagnosis.

Clear blocked wheels and the cutting system carefully

Power down before touching the mower

If an alert identifies a blocked wheel, blade disc or cutting system, stop the mower and follow the safety procedure in its manual. Do not reach toward blades or moving parts while the unit is powered or able to start. The Husqvarna Automower 105 operator manual identifies grass or another object wrapped around a drive wheel or blade disc as possible causes, but its procedure is specific to that model.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Inspect the parts named by the alert

  • Check each drive wheel for packed grass, string, wire or another object.
  • Inspect the cutting area for long grass or debris that can prevent free movement.
  • Look for damage, abnormal looseness or an object caught under the chassis.
  • Clean and refit parts only as the model manual directs.

After the inspection, place the mower on a clear section of lawn and observe whether it resumes normal movement. Repeated blockage in the same place points back to the terrain or an object there; repeated blockage everywhere warrants model-specific service guidance.

Do not use a generic blade-cleaning routine

Access points, shutdown controls and approved cleaning methods differ by model. The Automower 105 instructions cannot be assumed to apply to another Husqvarna model or another brand. If the wheel remains stiff, a component is damaged or the alert returns immediately, stop testing and use the manufacturer’s service procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Satellite, virtual-boundary and transport-path problems

Not every mower uses a buried or pinned boundary wire. Models using satellite positioning or virtual boundaries can show different symptoms when reception or a mapped transport path is inadequate. Do not apply wired-loop repairs to a satellite-only installation.

Husqvarna says EPOS Support by Wire can support a transport path where satellite coverage is weak. This is a feature-specific remedy for relevant EPOS installations, not a general fix for all robotic mowers. Confirm that your mower, software and installation support the feature before planning a hybrid path.

If only one corridor has poor positioning, record that corridor and the conditions when the failure occurs rather than repeatedly redrawing the whole lawn. A qualified installer can then determine whether the supported transport-path feature or a different mapped route is appropriate.

Choose the remedy that matches the diagnosis

Confirmed situation Appropriate response What it will not fix
Inactive or unsuitable schedule/coverage configuration Enable the correct work area and adjust the model’s coverage settings according to its app or manual. A physically blocked wheel or broken loop.
Permanent flower bed, rockery or fixed obstacle Create a supported boundary-wire or virtual exclusion island. A missing schedule or poor general mapping.
Seasonal furniture or planter on a compatible system Remove it or use the mower’s supported temporary-exclusion accessory or feature. Other brands’ installations unless compatibility is documented.
Broken boundary wire Locate the break, repair it with compatible materials and protect the joint; a wire-break detector may help. Missed patches caused by settings or access problems.
Blocked wheel or cutting system Power down and clean or inspect it using the exact model manual. Incorrect boundary geometry or an inactive schedule.
Weak satellite coverage on a supported EPOS installation Investigate the manufacturer’s supported wired transport-path feature. Generic wired-mower faults or unsupported models.

A complete troubleshooting sequence

  1. Record the pattern. Note the location, frequency and exact message before moving anything.
  2. Classify the failure. Decide whether it is a repeatable missed patch, a fixed-location stop, an outside-work-area alert, a no-loop-signal alert, a blocked-component alert or a transport-path problem.
  3. Check schedule and coverage. Confirm the relevant area is enabled and scheduled. On applicable Husqvarna systems, verify whether the My Lawn schedule is active.
  4. Inspect the location. Remove movable obstacles and examine clearance, wheel ruts, slopes, roots and narrow passages.
  5. Apply the correct exclusion. Map a permanent island for a permanent no-mow area; use a supported temporary method for seasonal objects.
  6. Inspect the mower safely. If the alert names a wheel or cutting system, power down and follow the model manual rather than using a generic blade-cleaning routine.
  7. Check the boundary only when symptoms point there. For an outside-area or loop-signal error, compare the wire with the installation plan and manufacturer spacing guidance.
  8. Repair confirmed wiring faults. Use a detector if useful, install compatible repair materials, protect the joint and verify the station signal.
  9. Run a controlled test. Let the mower operate in the formerly affected area and record whether the same message or location recurs.
  10. Escalate with evidence. If the fault persists, provide the model, software or app message, station-light state, installation type, exact location and steps already taken to the manufacturer or qualified installer.

Pitfalls that waste time or money

  • Buying boundary wire before confirming a loop-signal fault.
  • Rebuilding a map when the relevant schedule is disabled.
  • Using a temporary-obstacle accessory on a model or installation that does not support it.
  • Applying the 35 cm Husqvarna margin as a universal rule for another mower.
  • Moving boundary wire without recording its original route.
  • Touching the blade disc or wheel while the mower can still start.
  • Assuming one missed visit proves the mower cannot cover the area.

These mistakes can introduce a second problem while leaving the original cause untouched. Diagnose first, then make one controlled change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preventive checks that reduce repeat failures

  • Walk the lawn before the first mowing session after furniture, planting, edging or construction changes.
  • Keep the installation map current when a boundary or island is moved.
  • Check that schedules still include every work area after changing mowing modes.
  • Remove toys, hoses, branches and other temporary objects before a run.
  • Inspect wheels and the cutting system at the interval and in the manner specified by the mower manual.
  • Watch the charging station for unusual indicator states and record alerts instead of dismissing them.
  • Protect repaired wire and couplers from later digging, edging and foot traffic.

The key distinction is whether the mower is being told not to mow, cannot reach the area, cannot detect its boundary, or cannot move safely. Match the fix to that distinction and avoid buying wire, couplers or exclusion accessories until the symptom confirms they are relevant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my robot mower keep getting stuck in the same place?

Inspect the exact stopping point for furniture, planters, roots, ruts, soft ground, low objects, narrow passages or debris around a wheel. Remove a movable obstruction and test again. For a permanent obstruction, create a compatible exclusion island or temporary exclusion rather than repeatedly rescuing the mower.

Why is my robot lawn mower missing the same patch?

Check that the work area is enabled and scheduled, then compare the coverage configuration with the physical installation. If settings are correct, trace the route to the patch for a narrow passage, shifted object, slope or boundary issue. A visible map gap is not automatically proof that the mower cannot cut that area.

What does a blue flashing charging-station light mean?

When it appears with a no-loop-signal alert on a wired system, Husqvarna says a broken boundary wire may be involved. Use the installation layout and, if helpful, a compatible wire-break detector. Do not buy replacement wire until the wiring fault is confirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is 35 cm the correct boundary distance for every robot mower?

No. Husqvarna UK gives 35 cm as a normal minimum margin in a specific outside-work-area troubleshooting context near a slope or obstacle. Treat it as model-specific guidance and follow your mower’s own installation instructions.

Can an exclusion accessory fix missed patches?

Only when the accessory is supported by that mower and the problem is a seasonal obstacle. Worx describes Off Limits for supported Landroid systems, while permanent beds can use compatible islands. Neither remedy fixes an inactive schedule, poor coverage configuration, broken loop or blocked wheel.

How should I clean a blocked wheel or blade area?

Power the mower down and use the exact model manual. The Husqvarna Automower 105 manual identifies wrapped grass or another object around a drive wheel or blade disc as possible causes, but its cleaning procedure should not be generalized to other models.

Can a wire-break detector find every robot mower fault?

No. It is useful only for suspected breaks in a wired boundary loop. It cannot correct schedules, physical obstacles, virtual maps, satellite reception or blocked components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if satellite reception is weak in one transport path?

First confirm that the mower supports the relevant satellite and transport-path feature. Husqvarna’s EPOS Support by Wire is a feature-specific option for supported installations; it is not a general repair for wired or satellite mowers.

When should I call the manufacturer or an installer?

Escalate when the alert returns after the model-specific checks, a repaired loop will not regain its normal station signal, a wheel or cutting component appears damaged, or boundary changes involve slopes, complex passages or a large installation. Provide the model, message, station-light state, location and steps already taken.

The Bottom Line

Start with the pattern: schedule and coverage for repeatable missed patches, the stopping location for obstacles, the station light and loop alert for wired faults, and the model manual for blocked components. Use 35 cm only as the Husqvarna-specific guidance it is, match wire and accessories to the confirmed installation, and test one change at a time.
