Keep the podcast’s RSS feed alive and redirect it before you close or remove anything. A working feed, unchanged episode GUIDs, accurate metadata, and clear listener instructions are what preserve delivery when a show changes hosts or leaves a platform. A listing or account on one service does not automatically update every other directory, and no official source establishes a typical percentage of listeners lost after a platform departure.
First identify what is changing: a hosting-provider migration, removal from a listening directory, or the end of a paid subscription. Each has a different audience risk and recovery plan.

Identify the kind of platform departure
“Leaving a platform” can describe three different events. Decide which one applies before changing feeds or accounts.

Do not assume a hosting move, catalog removal, and subscription shutdown have the same audience outcome. Track each separately in your announcement and analytics.

Protect the RSS feed before you move
The RSS address is the distribution link that lets podcast apps retrieve new episodes. Your account on a hosting or listening service is not that link. Before changing providers, export the complete feed and confirm that you control both the old and new addresses.
Keep the old address responding
Configure the old server to return an HTTP 301 redirect to the new feed URL. A 301 tells apps and directories that the feed has moved permanently. Apple’s guidance for self-hosted feeds also requires the new feed to contain the <itunes:new-feed-url> tag pointing to the replacement address. Keep the redirect and tag active for at least four weeks, even if the migration appears successful immediately.
Spotify’s instructions for leaving its creator hosting service likewise describe redirecting the old creator feed to a new feed. Its official wording says a 301 redirect is intended to let listeners on Spotify and other platforms continue receiving new episodes after a move. That is a continuity mechanism, not a guarantee that every listener will remain engaged.
Do not delete the old account too soon
Keep the old hosting service, server, or account available until the redirect is confirmed and directories have had time to refresh. Spotify specifically advises waiting at least one week after redirecting before deleting an account. Treat that as Spotify-specific guidance, not a universal deadline for every host. Apple’s minimum four-week recommendation for the redirect is the safer baseline when you control the old server.
Preserve every episode GUID
An episode GUID is the stable identifier that tells apps whether an item is new or already known. Copy each GUID exactly into the new feed. Do not generate new identifiers merely because the audio files moved, the hosting provider changed, or the episode title was edited. Apple says GUIDs must be unique and must never change; changing them can make apps display duplicate episodes and can distort analytics.

Preserve audio and metadata
Carry over the enclosure URL or equivalent audio reference, publication date, title, description, duration, season and episode numbers, explicit-content setting, and cover art. Keep the show title and author information consistent during the transition. If you need a rebrand, complete the technical migration first and make editorial changes after delivery is stable so that a metadata difference does not look like a second show to an app.
Test the new feed before switching listeners
Do not discover a broken feed after the old server is gone. Compare the old and new XML in an RSS viewer or validator while both are still available.

- Generate the replacement feed. Confirm that the new feed is publicly reachable over HTTPS and does not require a login, cookie, or geoblock that podcast apps cannot use.
- Compare show-level fields. Check title, author, description, language, category, explicit-content setting, owner or contact information, and cover-art URL.
- Compare episode-level fields. Match GUIDs, titles, descriptions, publication dates, season and episode numbers, duration, audio URLs, and media type.
- Play several files. Test a recent episode, an older episode, and any subscriber or bonus item that will remain in the feed. Verify that redirects resolve and that the server returns the correct audio content type.
- Check the migration markers. Confirm that the old server returns a 301 and that the new feed contains
<itunes:new-feed-url>with the exact new URL. - Inspect the feed after publication. Repeat the comparison after the redirect is live. A configuration change can remove fields or rewrite URLs even when the prelaunch copy looked correct.
Apple recommends testing the feed during a hosting change. A successful browser load is not enough: an XML document can open in a browser while still containing invalid media URLs, duplicate GUIDs, or missing required fields.
Re-submit the show to every listening service
Moving a feed does not automatically create or repair listings everywhere. A show hosted by Spotify is available on Spotify automatically, but the creator must submit it separately to services such as Apple Podcasts and Amazon Music. Other directories have their own ownership checks and review queues.
Use the same feed URL consistently
Submit the new canonical RSS URL, not an episode page, redirecting short link, or private preview address. If a directory still displays the old feed, leave the old redirect active and follow that directory’s update or ownership process rather than creating a duplicate listing.

Allow for processing delays
Some services update within hours; others perform manual review. Spotify advises contacting a service if the show is still not live after a few days. Record the submission date, account used, feed URL, and any confirmation ID so you can follow up without submitting multiple competing listings.

Verify the result in each app
Search by the exact show title and open the listing as a listener. Check that the cover art, description, latest episode, back catalog, and follow button are present. Open an episode and confirm that its audio plays. A directory can show the title while still serving a stale feed, so inspect the episode publication date and GUID where the app exposes them.
Tell listeners exactly what to do
Technical continuity does not solve a discovery problem. Publish the change in the final episode on the old destination, in show notes, on your email list, and in the channels your audience already uses. State the effective date, the new show link, and what—if anything—the listener must click.
A useful migration announcement includes
- The reason for the move, stated plainly without implying that listeners caused it.
- The date after which new episodes will appear at the new destination.
- A direct link to the new listing in the listener’s preferred app, when available.
- The canonical RSS URL for listeners whose app supports adding a feed manually.
- A short instruction to follow or subscribe to the new listing and to check that notifications remain enabled.
- A support contact for people who still see the old show or receive no new episode.
Repeat the message in more than one episode or channel if the old platform will disappear quickly. Pin the notice where your audience can find it rather than relying on a single social post.
Explain direct RSS following accurately
Apple Podcasts permits a listener to follow a show by entering its RSS URL. This is a useful fallback when a catalog listing is delayed or unavailable. A direct RSS follow does not provide Apple catalog discovery, recommendations, editorial promotion, ratings, reviews, or Apple’s usual analytics for a catalog listing. Present it as a way to receive episodes, not as an equivalent replacement for a directory presence.

Do not promise a retention percentage
Spotify reported in a March 8, 2023 newsroom article that 75% of its podcast audience exclusively listened to “always-on” shows. That figure describes Spotify’s audience behavior; it is not a measure of migration success or the percentage retained after a show leaves a platform. A forum post titled “Lost a third of listeners after switching hosting platforms and can’t figure out why” is an individual question, not a representative statistic. No cited source establishes a typical listener-loss rate.
Handle paid subscriptions as a separate transition
Free RSS following and paid subscription access are different relationships. If an Apple Podcasts subscription is removed, subscribers lose that subscription arrangement. Episodes that remain in the free RSS feed can continue, and former subscribers can still receive notifications if they also follow the show.
Before removing paid access
- Decide which paid episodes, archives, or benefits will remain available and for how long.
- Tell subscribers the last date of paid access and whether any free RSS episodes will continue.
- Publish a short notice before removal, not only after the subscription disappears.
- Ask listeners who want the continuing show to follow the free RSS listing.
Keep the wording specific. “The subscription is ending” is not the same as “the podcast is ending.” Confusing those two statements can cause free followers to leave unnecessarily.

The decisive question is whether you can keep the old feed responding. If you can, use the redirect path. If you cannot, prioritize an accurate new feed, direct listener instructions, and platform-by-platform verification.
Diagnose a sudden audience drop after the move
Do not assume every decline is a failed redirect. Separate delivery, discovery, measurement, and paid-access effects.
Listeners report that no new episodes arrive
- Open the old feed URL and check for an HTTP 301 to the intended new URL.
- Open the new feed and confirm that the latest episode is published, not merely uploaded in the host dashboard.
- Compare the latest episode’s GUID with the pre-migration copy.
- Check whether the audio enclosure returns successfully without authentication.
- Inspect the directory’s displayed feed date and latest episode; it may still be caching the old feed.
The show appears twice or episodes are duplicated
Look for changed GUIDs, a new listing submitted before the old one updated, or a different feed URL that was distributed in announcements. Stop publishing duplicate feeds, keep the canonical feed stable, and ask the directory to merge or correct the listing where that process exists.
Downloads fall but delivery works
Compare platform-level data before and after the move. A feed can deliver normally while a directory’s search ranking, recommendations, or editorial exposure changes. Also check whether paid episodes were removed, whether listeners were asked to follow again, and whether the analytics system changed its counting method. The official migration instructions explain the technical route but do not quantify how discovery or engagement changes after departure.
One service is missing the show
Confirm that the service received the new RSS URL, then allow for its stated processing period. If the show is still absent after a few days, contact that service with the feed URL and submission details. Do not delete the old redirect while a directory is still resolving it.

Create a before-and-after record for each platform rather than relying on a single total. Track followers, episode downloads or starts, notification activity, completion measures available to you, and paid subscribers separately. Mark the date of the redirect, the date each directory accepted the new feed, and the date paid access changed.
Interpret the numbers in stages:
- Delivery: Are new episodes reaching the feed and playing successfully?
- Following: Did existing followers remain attached to the listing or feed?
- Discovery: Did search, recommendations, or editorial placement change?
- Engagement: Are retained listeners opening and finishing episodes at the previous rate?
- Paid access: Did subscription changes remove a distinct group from the available audience?
This sequence prevents a catalog-discovery loss from being mislabeled as a hosting failure. Review show-specific data by platform; there is no supported universal percentage for audience loss after migration.
Migration checklist
- Identify whether the change is hosting, directory availability, paid access, or a combination.
- Export the current RSS feed and episode identifiers.
- Build and test the replacement feed before switching.
- Keep every episode GUID unchanged.
- Configure the old server for a 301 redirect.
- Add
<itunes:new-feed-url>to the new feed. - Keep both mechanisms active for at least four weeks.
- Wait at least one week before deleting a Spotify creator account if Spotify is the service being left.
- Submit the new feed separately to each listening service.
- Check title, description, art, audio, latest episode, and metadata in every resulting listing.
- Announce the move with the new listing and, where useful, the RSS URL.
- Explain subscription changes separately from free RSS following.
- Record platform-level metrics before and after the move.
- Investigate delivery, discovery, engagement, and paid access as separate failure modes.
What successful continuity looks like
A technically successful move leaves one canonical RSS feed, an old address that redirects long enough for apps to refresh, unchanged episode GUIDs, intact audio and metadata, and a verified listing on each destination. Listeners know where to find the show and whether they must follow again. If the audience still changes after those conditions are met, examine discovery exposure, communication reach, and subscription status instead of assuming the feed migration itself caused the loss.
