Short answer: Windows settings can reduce the chance that an update restarts your PC during a kids’ YouTube livestream, but they cannot guarantee it will stay live. Before broadcasting, schedule updates outside the stream window and test how your encoder and YouTube event recover after a restart. After the PC comes back, check Windows, the encoder, YouTube Live Control Room, and the viewer-facing stream separately.
Reduce the chance of a restart during the stream
Windows may need to restart to finish installing an update. Active hours and restart scheduling can make an interruption less likely at showtime, but they do not permanently disable updates or guarantee that a restart will wait.

- Open Settings and go to Windows Update. The exact controls and labels can vary by Windows release and by organizational policy.
- Set active hours to cover the actual broadcast schedule, so automatic update restarts are less likely while the PC is in use.
- Before going live, check Windows Update for a pending restart or restart prompt. If one is present, schedule the restart for a time that does not overlap the stream.
- If you temporarily pause updates to avoid a conflict, plan to install them after the pause ends. Microsoft says updates cannot be stopped entirely.
These steps manage timing; they do not make a Windows PC a guaranteed unattended streaming system.
Know what may—and may not—happen after reboot
Microsoft documents Automatic Restart Sign-On (ARSO) for qualifying Windows Update restarts: Windows may sign in the last interactive user and then lock the session. Whether this applies depends on the Windows version, account and management context, and policy. A restored or locked-in session does not mean the streaming application has reopened, authenticated, loaded the right scene or media, regained network access, or resumed the YouTube event.

Keep ARSO distinct from general automatic sign-in. Microsoft Sysinternals Autologon configures Windows’ built-in automatic logon mechanism, but Microsoft warns: “Although the password is encrypted in the registry as an LSA secret, a user with administrative rights can easily retrieve and decrypt it.” Automatic sign-in is therefore a security decision, especially on a computer other people can physically access or one that holds sensitive data. Consider device ownership, account privileges, and any organization’s policy before enabling it.
Recover the stream after Windows returns
Do not treat a visible encoder window or a Windows sign-in as proof that viewers are receiving the broadcast. Work through these checks in order:

- Confirm Windows is ready. Let update setup finish, then confirm the intended user session is available.
- Check the network. Verify that the PC has internet access before expecting an encoder to reconnect.
- Inspect the encoder. Open or inspect the streaming application. Confirm it has the intended scene and source, and that it is sending both video and audio.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect the event’s current state, preview, and stream-health messages. If the encoder needs to connect again, use the event’s server URL and stream key as configured. Keep the stream key private: it is the credential/address used to send the feed.
- Verify what viewers see. When possible, open the intended-access or public watch page from another device or browser. If YouTube shows that the event has ended or is no longer live, follow the state shown there; a deliberate restart or a new event may be needed.
YouTube’s encoder guidance describes auto-start and auto-stop controls, but those settings do not establish that an encoder will recover from a Windows reboot or resume the same event. Test the exact PC, encoder, account, and event setup rather than assuming reconnection will work.

Test the full recovery path before relying on it
Run a controlled test well before children or viewers depend on the stream. Use the same PC, account, encoder, sources, and YouTube event configuration you plan to use for the real broadcast. Include the restart and recovery steps—not just a routine encoder launch—and check the outcome locally and from a viewer’s perspective.

- Confirm that the encoder opens with the intended video, audio, and scene after the test restart.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before starting, then confirm the watch page behaves as expected.
- If you use a backup encoder or failover setup, YouTube recommends testing it by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting Ethernet and confirming playback rolls to the backup.
- Do not describe automatic restart recovery as working unless it has been tested on this configuration.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archival rule, not a promise that viewers stay connected through a PC restart or that an interrupted event resumes seamlessly; check the event and viewer page after recovery.

A UPS addresses power loss more directly than a planned Windows Update restart. A replacement PC, capture card, microphone, or camera does not by itself solve the restart-and-relaunch problem.
