To stop a jailbroken Kindle from installing firmware over the air (OTA), use the current post-jailbreak instructions for your exact Kindle model, firmware version and jailbreak route. Current KindleModding guidance uses the renametobin option to disable or restore the update mechanism and provides a “Check OTA Status” scriptlet to verify the result. Airplane mode is useful while you prepare, but it is not a permanent OTA blocker.
Do not treat the old empty update.bin.tmp.partial folder trick as a universal fix. MobileRead documents it for particular legacy 5.x firmware contexts; newer firmware and jailbreak paths can require different handling. Before an intentional update, factory reset or downgrade, restore automatic updates first. Afterward, reinstall the hotfix from scratch and check whether KUAL or other extensions also need to be installed again.

The safe answer in one minute
A jailbroken Kindle does not have one universal “disable updates” switch. The correct procedure changes with the reader’s model or generation, installed firmware and jailbreak method. Start by recording those three details, then follow the matching instructions in the KindleModding Kindle Jailbreak FAQ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Keep the Kindle in Airplane mode while you identify the correct files and instructions if an update download is imminent.
- Use the current guide’s
renametobinoption to disable automatic updates where that route supports it. - Run the guide’s “Check OTA Status” scriptlet rather than assuming the block worked.
- Before updating, resetting or downgrading on purpose, use
renametobinto restore normal update behavior. - After maintenance, reinstall the hotfix and any KUAL or extensions that no longer work.
The old folder method belongs in a historical, conditional section—not as a recipe for every modern Kindle.

What an OTA update is and why a jailbreak changes the decision
OTA means “over the air”: software delivered through the Kindle’s network connection instead of a USB file copied from a computer. Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page lists downloadable software by reader model. Its model-by-model layout is important because firmware numbers and files differ between generations; there is no single “latest Kindle firmware” number that safely applies to every device.
Amazon’s user documentation describes automatic software upgrades as a delivery method for Kindle software. On an unmodified reader, that convenience is normally desirable. On a jailbroken reader, an update can alter the system files, permissions or interfaces on which the jailbreak, hotfix and extensions depend. A firmware change may leave the jailbreak usable, remove it, or require a new exploit and a fresh installation. Even when the underlying jailbreak survives, add-ins commonly need to be installed again.
That is why an OTA block is a maintenance choice, not a guarantee of permanent jailbreak survival. The legacy MobileRead documentation reports survival and add-in behavior for a defined group of old firmware versions; those observations do not establish what will happen on current firmware or with a different jailbreak route.

Find the model and generation
On the Kindle, open the device settings and look for the device information or device-info screen. Record the commercial model name, generation if shown, and serial prefix. If the software screen does not clearly identify the generation, use the serial and the model-identification information in the jailbreak guide rather than guessing from the exterior.
Record the complete firmware version
Copy the full version shown in Device Info, including every digit after the dots. “5.x” is not enough: jailbreak instructions often distinguish minor releases and firmware families. Do not use a version quoted for another Kindle simply because the two readers look similar.
Record how the jailbreak was obtained
Note whether the reader uses a method tied to a particular firmware range, a serial-based process or a later post-jailbreak package. Also note whether a hotfix is already installed and whether KUAL or extensions are present. The post-jailbreak steps can differ even when two devices report similar firmware numbers.
Use Airplane mode as a temporary safeguard
Turn on Airplane mode before investigating an imminent update or connecting to a wireless network. This prevents a network check while you are gathering the model and firmware details and while you download the correct files to a computer. It does not permanently disable OTA updates: turning wireless back on can allow the normal update process unless the applicable post-jailbreak procedure has changed the update mechanism.

If the Kindle has already downloaded an update, do not proceed by trial and error. Leave it offline, back up user documents, and consult the instructions for the exact jailbreak route. A downloaded package, a partially applied update and a merely available update are different situations, and the recovery steps are not interchangeable.
Current method: follow the model-specific KindleModding instructions
The current community guidance is intentionally device- and firmware-dependent. Open the KindleModding FAQ, select the instructions matching the recorded model, firmware and jailbreak, and use the linked package or guide rather than copying an old binary from a forum post. The FAQ identifies renametobin as the mechanism for disabling or restoring automatic updates and points to a “Check OTA Status” scriptlet.
- Back up first. Copy books, documents, screenshots, notes and any custom files to a computer. Keep a separate copy of the hotfix and extension packages that are compatible with the reader, but do not assume that an old package remains compatible after a firmware change.
- Stay offline during setup. Enable Airplane mode and leave it enabled while you confirm the guide and prepare the files. If you need to transfer files, use a known-good USB data cable and a computer; a charging-only cable will not expose the Kindle’s storage.
- Open the current FAQ for the exact combination. Read the compatibility notes before running anything. The screen labels, package placement and order can vary by jailbreak path, so do not substitute instructions from a different model.
- Apply the
renametobinoption exactly as documented. In the applicable guide, this option changes the name or availability of the system component used for automatic updates. Follow the package’s own placement and launch instructions; do not manually rename system binaries based on a generic example. - Verify instead of guessing. Run the “Check OTA Status” scriptlet referenced by the FAQ. Treat its reported state as the confirmation that the blocker is active. If it reports that updates remain enabled, leave Airplane mode on and stop before reconnecting.
- Reconnect cautiously. Only turn wireless back on after the status check confirms the intended state and you have read the guide’s notes for your firmware. Keep the backup and recovery files available in case an extension or user interface component needs repair.
The companion KindleModding hotfix setup guide explains the computer connection and file-copy stage used by the post-jailbreak process. It is the appropriate reference for reinstalling the hotfix after maintenance; it is not a reason to use a package intended for another device.

The legacy update.bin.tmp.partial folder method
MobileRead’s 5.x Jailbreak page documents an older OTA-blocking technique. In the context described there, the user creates an empty directory named exactly update.bin.tmp.partial at the top level of the Kindle’s visible USB storage. The name has no extension, and the directory contains no files.

That detail matters, but so does the scope. The page is legacy 5.x guidance, and update behavior on newer firmware can differ. An empty folder that worked for an older reader is not evidence that it blocks updates on a current model. Use this method only when the instructions for the particular firmware and jailbreak explicitly confirm it. Do not combine it with competing mechanisms or rename system files manually to imitate it.
If you are maintaining a modern jailbroken Kindle, prefer the current renametobin procedure and its status check. If you are following a documented legacy route, preserve the exact spelling and location and verify the result using the route’s own instructions. When the current guide and a historical page disagree, the current, model-specific guide takes precedence.
How to update, factory-reset or downgrade safely
OTA blocking is reversible, and it must be reversed before an operation that intentionally changes the firmware or erases the device. KindleModding specifically warns that leaving renametobin enabled during a reset can leave the reader unable to update normally. Its FAQ states: “If you reset your Kindle in a jailbroken state with renametobin left enabled, your Kindle may be in a locked state.”

- Restore automatic updates. Use the
renametobinrestore procedure in the current guide for your exact model and firmware. Confirm the restored state with the available OTA-status check. - Perform the planned operation. Install the model-specific firmware, factory-reset through the normal supported process, or follow the documented downgrade procedure. Do not mix a downgrade package with instructions for a different generation.
- Reinstall the hotfix from scratch. After the update, reset or downgrade, repeat the hotfix installation described in the hotfix guide. A previous installation should not be assumed to remain intact.
- Restore your add-ins. Test KUAL and each extension. Reinstall any component that no longer launches or whose files were removed by the operation.
- Recheck the final state. If you intend to keep the newly jailbroken device protected from future OTA updates, apply the current blocking procedure again and run the status scriptlet. Keep Airplane mode on until the check is complete.
A factory reset is not a substitute for restoring update behavior. The reset can erase user data while preserving a disabled update mechanism, which is why the restore step belongs before the reset rather than after it.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | Likely issue | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The status scriptlet says updates are enabled | The wrong package or firmware instructions were used, or the option did not run. | Keep Airplane mode on, confirm the complete firmware string and jailbreak route, then return to the current KindleModding instructions. Do not stack an old folder trick on top of the current method. |
| The Kindle does not appear on the computer | The cable supplies power but not data, or the USB connection has not mounted. | Try a known-good USB data cable and another computer port. The cable is a convenience accessory, not a special jailbreak product. Never disconnect during a file copy. |
| An extension stopped working after maintenance | The update, reset or downgrade removed or invalidated add-in files. | Reinstall the hotfix first, then reinstall the affected extension using a package confirmed for the resulting firmware. Test one extension at a time. |
| The Kindle is stuck after a reset or cannot receive a normal update | renametobin may still be left in its disabled state. |
Keep the device offline and follow the FAQ’s restore procedure for the exact jailbreak. Do not assume another factory reset will repair the update path. |
| The old folder appears to do nothing | The firmware is outside the legacy context documented by MobileRead, or the directory is not at the visible storage root. | Remove guesswork: use the current model-specific method and its status check. Only recreate the folder if the applicable guide explicitly supports it. |
| The Kindle downloads an update as soon as wireless is enabled | Airplane mode was being used as the only protection, or the blocker was not active. | Disconnect again, verify the OTA status offline, and apply the supported blocking procedure before reconnecting. |
Security, support and the trade-off of blocking updates
Suppressing updates can preserve a working jailbreak, but it also means the Kindle may miss bug fixes, feature changes and security fixes. Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Device Software Security Updates page describes support periods and cautions that “the update period is not a guarantee as to how long your device will last.” That policy language does not quantify the security risk of disabling OTA updates on a modified reader, so no universal risk percentage or safe time limit can be given.
Make the trade-off deliberately. Keep important documents backed up, avoid entering sensitive information on an unsupported or heavily modified device, and periodically check the official model-specific software page and the community guide for changes relevant to your firmware. If a security fix or feature is more important than retaining the current jailbreak, restore updates first and use the maintenance sequence above.
Using a computer and USB cable
The post-jailbreak hotfix process uses a computer connection to copy files. Most Kindle owners already have a compatible cable, but a cable that only charges will not work for this task. Match the cable to the reader’s port, connect directly to the computer, wait for the Kindle storage to mount, and copy files only to the locations specified by the applicable guide.

A concise decision checklist
- Have I recorded the exact model or generation?
- Have I copied the complete firmware version?
- Do I know which jailbreak method and hotfix are installed?
- Is Airplane mode enabled while I prepare?
- Does the current guide for this combination use
renametobin? - Did the “Check OTA Status” scriptlet confirm the intended state?
- Am I avoiding the legacy folder method unless my firmware documentation explicitly supports it?
- Before an update, reset or downgrade, did I restore automatic updates first?
- Afterward, did I reinstall the hotfix and test KUAL and extensions?
- Are my books, documents and recovery files backed up?
Sources and version boundaries
Amazon’s software catalog is organized by device, so consult the entry for the exact reader rather than copying a version number from another Kindle. Amazon’s historical Kindle User’s Guide, 2nd Edition explains the general idea of automatic updates but should not be treated as a current firmware catalog.
The KindleModding FAQ and hotfix guide are the current references for post-jailbreak update-state changes and reinstalling the hotfix. The MobileRead page is useful for understanding the legacy 5.x folder technique and its limits. None of these sources establishes that one blocker will survive every future firmware release, every Kindle generation or every jailbreak method.
