For a planned break, switch to a prepared “Be Right Back” (BRB) scene or use your platform’s pause-broadcast control before leaving. Don’t rely on a connection-loss feature for a planned absence: those controls are meant to help recover an interrupted stream, not provide an intentional intermission.
Choose a planned-break method, not a disconnection fallback
First decide what viewers should see and hear while you are away. A deliberate pause or BRB scene gives you control over the intermission; a dropped connection may instead expose a blank screen or end the broadcast. Before stepping away, check that the game, desktop, microphone, and other audio sources are not revealing something private or leaving viewers with an unintended feed.

- Direct console broadcast: use the documented pause control if your console and broadcast setup provide one.
- PC encoder: switch to a BRB scene that you prepared and tested before going live.
- Unexpected connection loss: use a platform’s reconnect protection as recovery, not as your break plan.
Pause a PS5 broadcast
- While broadcasting, open the PS5 Broadcast card.
- Select Pause Broadcast before you step away.
- Return to the broadcast and resume when you are ready.
PlayStation describes this option as a way to tell viewers to hold on while you step away: it puts the camera feed on hold and mutes all audio until you return. The documented behavior is specific to the PS5 broadcast control; don’t assume another console or streaming method has the same feature.
Leaving the game is not a substitute for a polished intermission. PlayStation notes that navigating away from a game or activating see-through view can show a blank screen with a message. If that is not what you want viewers to see, use the pause control instead.

Set up a BRB scene in PC streaming software
A BRB scene is a prepared layout that you switch to for a planned pause. Keep the visual simple, and check carefully for sources that should not remain live, especially a microphone, desktop capture, or private chat window. Streaming scenes and overlays are a recognized workflow in Twitch Creator Camp’s Stream Scenes & Overlays lesson.
- Build the scene before going live. Add a clear “Be Right Back” message or other suitable intermission visual.
- Review every source. Confirm which game, camera, microphone, desktop, and other audio sources are active in the BRB scene. Mute or remove anything you do not want viewers to see or hear.
- Test both transitions. Switch from gameplay to BRB and back. Check that the correct visual appears, the microphone behaves as intended, and no source keeps playing unexpectedly.
- Switch to BRB before leaving. When you return, check the scene and audio before resuming gameplay.
The exact controls differ between streaming applications and versions, so verify the scene and source behavior in your own setup rather than assuming a scene change automatically mutes every input.

Understand Twitch’s reconnect slate
Twitch Disconnect Protection is for an encoder disconnect while you are broadcasting, not a planned break. Twitch says viewers can see a reconnect slate for up to 90 seconds while you troubleshoot and reconnect. If you do not reconnect within that window, the stream ends. That 90-second limit is a recovery window, not a recommended break length.
Twitch lists OBS Studio, Streamlabs OBS, XSplit, Twitch Studio, and Twitch mobile broadcasts among the supported options, and recommends testing encoder support. Check Twitch’s current Disconnect Protection guidance and test your own configuration. For a planned absence, switch to a BRB scene instead.

What YouTube Live settings do—and do not do
YouTube Live’s DVR setting is for viewers: when enabled, viewers can pause, rewind, and continue playback during a live stream. It is not documented as a host-side BRB screen or pause control. YouTube also documents auto-start and auto-stop controls for encoder streams; those are separate stream settings, not an intermission slate. See YouTube’s live stream settings for the current controls.
If you stream to YouTube through an encoder, prepare a BRB scene in that software and test it before the event. YouTube recommends matching stream quality to your internet connection, testing with representative audio and video movement, and monitoring stream health during the event. Its encoder guidance lists CBR as the bitrate encoding mode and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings for applicable settings and quality guidance; requirements can change.

Test the break before you need it
- Run a test with representative game motion and audio, then check stream health.
- Switch to the BRB scene and back, confirming the right image and audio behavior on both transitions.
- Check the stream from a viewer’s perspective so you can spot a blank screen, unintended microphone audio, or exposed desktop.
- Choose output quality that fits the available connection, rather than discovering a stability problem during the event.
Troubleshooting a break or interruption
