Keep the laptop on a hard, level surface, leave every intake and exhaust vent open, and reduce the game’s workload when temperatures or fan noise stay higher than usual. Close unneeded background programs, use only the thermal or fan controls supported for your model, and consider a stable stand or cooling pad for extra clearance. Clean only after shutting down and unplugging, using the manufacturer’s method. Loud fans during a demanding game can be normal; grinding noises, repeated shutdowns, restarts, performance loss, or overheating that persists after these checks warrant manufacturer diagnostics or authorized service.
Why gaming laptops get hot
A game can keep both the processor (CPU) and graphics processor (GPU) busy for long periods. Electrical power becomes heat, and the laptop’s heat sink, heat pipes and fans move that heat out through the exhaust vents. As the internal temperature rises, the control system normally increases fan speed. ASUS explains that higher temperatures and louder fans are expected during resource-intensive work such as gaming because the fans must move more air through the heat sink.

Fan noise alone does not prove a fault. The useful distinction is between a fan that becomes louder while a demanding game is running and a system that remains unusually loud, makes a grinding or rattling sound, shuts down, restarts, or loses performance. The latter symptoms indicate that you should troubleshoot rather than simply accept the noise.

There is no universal “safe gaming temperature” that applies to every laptop. Cooling hardware, firmware, processor, graphics chip, chassis and regional safety instructions differ by model. Use your laptop maker’s manual and support page for temperature limits and fan behavior. ASUS Support’s overheating guidance lists an ambient operating range of 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F) for the devices covered by that guidance, but that range must not be generalized to another model.

Set up the laptop for airflow before you launch a game
Use a hard, level surface
Place the laptop on a desk or table. Beds, pillows, sofas, clothing and carpet can press against the underside and cover intake openings, while soft surfaces can let the computer sink into an uneven pocket. A firm surface keeps the base stable and gives the fans a predictable path for air.
Find every intake and exhaust opening
Vent locations vary. Some laptops draw air through the bottom, others use side or rear openings, and many use more than one path. Check the model’s manual or support page instead of assuming that a particular grille is an intake. Keep the openings themselves and the space around them clear; do not push the rear of the machine against a wall or place objects over a side vent.
ASUS Support’s wording is straightforward: “Do not block the device’s ventilation holes and maintain a certain distance around all vents to avoid poor heat dissipation and system overheating.” Treat that clearance as part of the setup, not an optional fine-tuning step.

Keep the room within the specified range
Room temperature directly affects the air entering the laptop. Use the range in your model’s safety instructions. For the ASUS guidance cited above, the stated ambient range is 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F). A hotter room leaves less margin for the cooler to remove heat; it does not mean that every laptop has the same limit.

Do not place the laptop on a heat-trapping surface
Even if the vents are not visibly covered, a blanket or cushion can trap warm exhaust around the chassis. Move to a table before starting a long session. If you must play away from a desk, use a rigid lap board that supports the entire base and does not obstruct the vents.
Decide whether elevation or a cooling pad is worthwhile
Raising the rear edge can create more space beneath a bottom intake and can prevent the base from sitting directly against a surface. A simple adjustable stand provides elevation without adding a fan. A powered cooling pad combines elevation with its own fans. ASUS identifies both a stand and a cooling pad as ways to elevate a laptop and prevent direct contact with the surface.
Neither accessory is guaranteed to lower temperatures by a particular number of degrees. The reviewed manufacturer guidance does not publish a universal temperature reduction or frame-rate improvement, and a pad’s fan placement may not line up with your laptop’s intake. Choose based on fit and airflow rather than a promised percentage.

Lower the game’s workload when heat or fan behavior is excessive
Close unnecessary background applications
Before launching the game, close browsers with many tabs, launchers you are not using, video editors, virtual machines and other demanding programs. Background work consumes processor time and can keep the cooling system active even when the game itself is unchanged. MSI’s overheating troubleshooting also includes checking background applications.
Lower resolution and graphics settings
If the laptop becomes warmer than usual, HP recommends lowering the game’s resolution and graphics settings. Start with the settings that create the largest workload for your system, then adjust gradually so you can keep an acceptable image while reducing demand. Record the original values so you can restore them later.
Apply changes one at a time when diagnosing a problem. If lowering resolution changes fan behavior noticeably, the system may simply have been operating near its cooling capacity. If nothing changes, continue with airflow, software and hardware checks rather than endlessly lowering visual quality.

Keep the laptop’s supported system software and firmware current when the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions call for an update. An update can address a documented control or stability issue, but it cannot repair a blocked vent, dust-filled heat sink or failing fan.
Clean dust safely
Prepare the machine
- Save your game and shut the laptop down completely; do not clean while it is running or sleeping.
- Unplug the charger and disconnect accessories.
- Move the laptop to a clear, well-lit work surface.
- Read the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for the exact model, because opening the chassis or removing a panel can affect warranty or service requirements.
Clean external openings conservatively
Follow the maker’s external-cleaning procedure and keep air pressure gentle. ASUS advises against strong-air compressors, and says canned compressed air should be held at a distance and never used with the can inverted. MSI likewise instructs users to shut down before cleaning and keep air at a distance. Do not treat a high-pressure air gun or compressor as an equivalent substitute.
Short, controlled bursts directed according to the manufacturer’s instructions are safer than forcing a continuous blast into a vent. Avoid pushing debris deeper into the chassis. If you are unsure which opening is an intake or exhaust, stop and consult the manual rather than experimenting.
Know when not to open the chassis
Internal dust on a fan, heat sink or vent can require disassembly. Because procedures, warranty terms and service rules vary, use an authorized service provider when the manufacturer does not document user-accessible internal cleaning. ASUS recommends service for dust-related overheating when user troubleshooting does not resolve it. A repair professional can inspect the fan, heat sink and thermal interface without asking you to guess which components are safe to remove.

Recognize normal fan behavior versus a fault
Behavior that can be normal
- Fans ramp up when a demanding game loads or a visually complex scene appears.
- Fan speed changes as the workload changes.
- The chassis feels warm during sustained play while the system remains stable and performs normally.
Symptoms that need troubleshooting
- Fan noise stays unusually high after the game is closed or after the laptop is idle.
- A fan makes grinding, scraping or other abnormal mechanical sounds.
- The laptop shuts down, restarts intermittently or loses performance during play.
- Temperature or fan behavior is clearly worse than it was under the same conditions.
- Manufacturer diagnostics report a hardware fault.
MSI lists intermittent restarts, shutdowns and performance degradation among overheating symptoms. Those signs are more important than a subjective judgment that the case “feels hot.” Do not infer a fault from a single temperature reading unless your model’s documentation defines the relevant limit.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Work through the checks in order so you change one factor at a time and can identify what helped.
- Stop the game and inspect the setup. Move the laptop to a hard, level surface. Check the bottom, side and rear openings for contact with fabric, walls or objects.
- Provide clearance. Reposition the machine so air can enter and leave every vent. If the design benefits from it, test a stable stand or cooling pad that does not cover an intake.
- Check ambient conditions. Compare the room with the operating range in the model’s manual. The ASUS guidance cited earlier specifies 5°C to 35°C for the covered devices; use your own model’s specification as the authority.
- Reduce competing work. Close unnecessary background applications and retry the same game scene.
- Reduce demand. Lower the game’s resolution and graphics settings as HP suggests when the computer is warmer than usual.
- Check supported controls. Use the manufacturer’s documented fan or thermal mode and apply supported software or firmware updates when instructed.
- Clean only as documented. Shut down and unplug first. Use gentle, manufacturer-approved external cleaning; never use strong compressed air or invert a can of compressed air.
- Run diagnostics. Use the laptop maker’s hardware diagnostics if the problem continues or the support documentation directs you to do so.
- Escalate unresolved symptoms. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for grinding fans, repeated shutdowns or restarts, performance degradation, a diagnostic fault, or persistent overheating.
How to prepare for a long gaming session
Before starting
- Place the laptop on its intended hard surface and verify that all vents have surrounding space.
- Confirm the room is within the model’s specified ambient range.
- Close unnecessary background programs.
- Choose the documented thermal or fan profile appropriate to the game, if your model provides one.
- Keep the charger and cables routed so they do not pull the laptop against a wall or obstruct a vent.
During play
- Pay attention to changes from the laptop’s normal behavior rather than trying to eliminate every fan sound.
- If the machine becomes warmer than usual, lower resolution or graphics settings and check for new background activity.
- Do not move the laptop onto a bed, blanket or cushion because the game is running for a long time.
After a session
Close the game and observe whether fan speed returns toward its usual idle behavior. Persistent loudness after the workload ends is a reason to check processes, vents and diagnostics. A single loud session in a warm room does not establish a hardware failure, but a repeatable change under the same conditions deserves investigation.

| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Better approach |
|---|---|---|
| Playing on a bed or sofa | Soft material can cover or surround intake openings | Use a desk, table or rigid support that leaves vents open |
| Blocking the rear or side exhaust | Warm air cannot leave efficiently | Leave space around every opening and check the model’s vent layout |
| Buying a pad based on a promised temperature number | No universal reduction is established and fan placement differs | Choose for secure fit, clearance and compatible vent alignment |
| Blasting vents with a compressor | Strong air can damage or overspeed components and drive debris inward | Use the maker’s cautious method with the machine off and unplugged |
| Installing unsupported fan utilities | Controls may conflict with model firmware or provide unsafe behavior | Use only manufacturer-supported controls |
| Ignoring grinding noises or shutdowns | Those symptoms can indicate a hardware or cooling fault | Run diagnostics and contact authorized service if unresolved |
When professional service is the right choice
Stop treating the issue as a desk-setup problem when the laptop repeatedly shuts down, restarts, loses performance, produces an abnormal fan sound, or reports a hardware fault. Also seek service when careful airflow changes, workload reduction, supported controls and documented cleaning do not restore normal behavior.
Contact the laptop manufacturer first if the device is under warranty or if the support page specifies a required procedure. An authorized provider can determine whether the cause is dust inside the cooling path, a fan or heat-sink problem, firmware behavior, or another hardware fault. Do not promise yourself that replacing thermal material or opening the chassis is harmless; model-specific construction and service rules matter.
Bottom line
The most reliable cooling improvement is free: give the laptop unobstructed airflow on a hard, level surface. Then reduce unnecessary workload, use only supported fan controls, and lower resolution or graphics settings if the system is warmer than usual. A stand or cooling pad is an optional way to add clearance, not a guaranteed temperature fix. Clean conservatively with the laptop shut down and unplugged, and escalate abnormal noises, shutdowns, restarts, performance loss or diagnostic faults to the manufacturer or authorized service.
