A food and symptom diary can help you spot repeated links between meals and gas, bloating, pain, or bowel changes. Record what you eat and drink, approximate portions, the time, when symptoms begin and end, their severity, and any medicines or supplements. Review several days for recurring patterns, then take the record to a clinician or dietitian. A diary organizes observations; it cannot diagnose an intolerance, allergy, irritable bowel syndrome, or another condition.
What a food and symptom diary can—and cannot—tell you
Gas is influenced by more than one ingredient. Portion size, meal timing, food combinations, drinks, supplements, medicines and the way your digestive system responds can all matter. A diary puts those details beside a timeline instead of relying on memory.

The useful question is not “Which food always causes gas?” It is “What repeatedly happened before my symptoms, under similar conditions?” One entry is an observation, not proof. A symptom may begin hours after eating and can last for hours or days, so recording only the meal immediately before discomfort can miss the relevant food.

The NHS similarly notes that people may be asked to keep a food and symptoms diary when investigating possible food intolerance. Neither source presents a diary as a diagnostic test.

- It cannot show by itself: whether a food caused the symptom, whether you have an allergy or intolerance, or which restrictive diet is safe for you.
- It should support care: bring the record to a GP, gastroenterology clinician or registered dietitian rather than making major exclusions from a few entries.
What should I write in a food diary?
Write the entry while you are eating or soon afterward. The core fields used in NHS dietetic templates are food and drink, quantity, timing, symptoms, and medicines or supplements. Add enough detail to distinguish one meal from another without turning the log into an exhausting nutrition project.
| Field | What to record | Useful level of detail |
|---|---|---|
| Date and time | When you ate or drank | Use the same clock format every day, such as 7:30 a.m. or 19:30. |
| Food or drink | Everything consumed, including snacks and beverages | Name the main ingredients; include a brand when a packaged product may differ. |
| Approximate amount | How much you had | Use household measures such as one cup, two slices, one bowl, or a small handful. Exact weighing is not required. |
| Symptoms | Gas or wind, bloating, pain or discomfort, bowel changes and other relevant symptoms | Describe what you felt rather than writing only “bad stomach.” |
| Onset and duration | When the symptom began and when it eased | Record elapsed time after eating when possible, such as “started about three hours later.” |
| Severity | How intense it was | Choose a simple scale and keep it consistent, for example 0 for none through 10 for worst. |
| Medicines and supplements | Regular and occasional products | Include the name, approximate time and, if known, dose. Do not stop prescribed treatment because of a diary entry. |
Include water, carbonated drinks, alcohol and drinks containing milk or fruit juice. A “small” serving can mean different things, so a rough quantity is more informative than a food name alone. If a recipe contains several ingredients, list the important components or keep the package label available for your appointment.
How to keep the diary: a practical step-by-step method
- Choose a format you will actually use. A notebook, printable sheet or phone note can all work. Put the diary somewhere visible and make one row or entry for each meal, snack and drink.
- Record as you go. Enter the time, food, drink and approximate amount before details fade. Add medicines and supplements on the same timeline.
- Log symptoms separately from meals. When gas, bloating, pain, discomfort or a bowel change appears, record the clock time, description, duration and consistent severity score. If it continues into the next day, update the end time rather than creating a new cause.
- Add a brief context note when it matters. Note an unusually large meal, a new packaged product or another circumstance that could help a clinician interpret the day. There is no validated requirement to document every aspect of daily life, so keep this short.
- Review the completed entries for repetition. Compare days with symptoms and days without them. Look at timing and portion size, not just whether a food appears somewhere in the record.
- Take the record to an appointment. A clinician or dietitian can consider the diary alongside your medical history and decide whether further evaluation, a supervised food trial or another approach is appropriate.
Keep your usual meals broadly stable while observing if you can do so comfortably. Changing several foods at once makes it difficult to know what any later improvement or worsening means. This is practical record-keeping advice, not a diagnostic protocol.
How long should you keep a gas and food diary?
There is no single duration that is medically validated for every person. A Lincolnshire Nutrition and Dietetic Services template is designed for one week. A Cambridge University Hospitals low-FODMAP handout uses a 5–7-day food and symptom diary in a specific follow-up situation when symptoms have not improved enough. These are useful examples, not a universal rule.

For many people, a continuous seven-day record captures workdays and at least part of a weekend, when meal patterns may differ. If symptoms are infrequent, a clinician may ask you to continue longer. If recording becomes burdensome or symptoms are severe, ask for advice rather than extending the exercise indefinitely.
Mark the first and last day clearly. A short, complete record is more useful than several weeks with missing times, portions or symptoms.
How to find food triggers without jumping to conclusions
Compare timing, not just ingredients
Place the symptom start time beside each meal. A reaction that appears later may relate to an earlier meal, while a symptom that begins before eating cannot have been caused by that meal alone. Record when discomfort resolves as well as when it begins.
Compare portions
A food may appear on both comfortable and uncomfortable days, but in different amounts. Write “half a cup” and “two cups” rather than simply listing the ingredient. A repeated change in symptoms as the portion changes is a reason to discuss the pattern, not confirmation of causation.

Look for more than one occasion
Search for the same association across multiple entries and, if possible, compare occasions when the suspected food was not eaten. One episode can coincide with stress, an infection, constipation, a large meal or another food. The diary is strongest when a pattern recurs under broadly similar circumstances.
Separate a food from a recipe
If symptoms follow a restaurant dish or a packaged meal, the suspected factor may be one ingredient, a combination, a larger portion or a drink served with it. Record the recipe or label details instead of assigning the reaction to every component at once.
Use neutral language
Write “bloating began about four hours after lentil soup, severity 5/10” rather than “lentils caused the attack.” Neutral wording keeps the record useful when a clinician considers other explanations.
What foods cause gas?
There is no universal gas-trigger list. NHS guidance notes that some people notice symptoms after fizzy drinks or particular vegetables, while beans and lentils can cause gas for some people. NIDDK discusses fiber, high-fat foods, lactose, fructose and low-FODMAP approaches in relevant clinical contexts. These examples are possibilities to observe, not instructions to avoid them all.

| Category to notice | What to record | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Carbonated drinks | Type, amount and time | Compare similar meals with and without the fizzy drink; do not assume the meal was responsible. |
| Beans and lentils | Food, preparation and portion | Check whether symptoms track with the amount and whether other meals containing legumes are symptom-free. |
| Particular vegetables | Specific vegetable and serving size | Record the individual vegetable rather than labeling all vegetables as triggers. |
| Fiber-rich foods | Sources and approximate portions across the day | Consider the overall pattern and discuss any planned change with a professional. |
| High-fat foods | Fried or rich foods and portion size | Note the whole meal and timing; an association does not establish a fat intolerance. |
| Lactose-containing foods | Milk, ice cream, soft cheese or other relevant items | Record the product and amount. A diary cannot diagnose lactose intolerance. |
| Fructose-containing foods or drinks | Fruit, juices and sweetened products | Look for repeated timing and portion patterns before discussing a dietary trial. |
A low-FODMAP diet is a structured intervention used in some clinical situations, not a general gas-prevention checklist. Do not start a broad restriction solely because several foods appear in your diary.
Choosing a diary format
| Format | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Plain notebook | Immediate, inexpensive and flexible; easy to add unusual details. | Columns may be inconsistent unless you draw a simple template. |
| Printable sheet | Prompts time, quantity, symptoms and medicines; convenient to share at an appointment. | Can become cramped when symptoms span several hours or days. |
| Phone note or spreadsheet | Searchable timestamps and easy copying or sharing. | Typing immediately after eating may be inconvenient; protect personal health information. |
You do not need to buy a specialist journal. The best format is the one that captures the same essential fields consistently and can be shown to your clinician.
A worked example of a useful entry
| Time | Food or drink and amount | Symptoms and timing | Medicine or context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7:30 | Oatmeal, one bowl; banana, one small; coffee with milk, one cup | No symptoms at the time | Usual morning medicine at 7:00 |
| 12:45 | Lentil soup, about two cups; bread, two slices; water | No symptoms immediately | Usual workday |
| 16:00 | Bloating and gas began about three hours after lunch; discomfort 4/10 | ||
| 19:30 | Rice, chicken and cooked vegetables; water | Gas continued; eased by 22:00 | No supplement |
This entry preserves the delay between lunch and symptoms, gives approximate portions and records that the evening meal occurred while symptoms were already present. It does not prove that lentils caused the episode; comparison with other days is still needed.

Do not remove several foods at once
Broad restriction can make the record impossible to interpret and may reduce nutritional variety. NHS advice cautions against excluding foods without guidance from a GP or dietitian. This is especially important for children, whose nutrient needs make unsupervised restriction risky.
Use avoidance and reintroduction only with appropriate advice
The NHS describes a clinician-guided period of avoiding a suspected food followed by trying it again as one possible way to investigate intolerance. If a professional recommends this approach, follow the agreed portions, timing and safety plan rather than improvising a series of eliminations.
Keep prescribed treatment unchanged unless told otherwise
List medicines and supplements so a clinician can consider them. Do not stop, restart or change a prescribed product based only on a diary entry.

- Only recording large meals: add snacks, drinks and tasting while cooking.
- Writing “a lot” or “some”: use a household measure or a simple small, medium or large description.
- Logging symptoms without a clock time: record onset and end time so delayed reactions are visible.
- Changing the diet while starting the diary: note any changes and, when safe, avoid changing several variables simultaneously.
- Using a different severity scale each day: define your scale once and apply it consistently.
- Deleting symptom-free days: they provide the comparison needed to judge whether an association repeats.
- Calling an association a diagnosis: use the diary to start a clinical conversation, not to label yourself.
When gas or bloating needs medical help
Contact a GP if bloating is recurrent or persistent. NHS guidance lists urgent advice for bloating accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, stomach pain, fever, a swelling or lump, or inability to urinate, pass stool or pass gas.
Seek emergency help for sudden severe pain, vomit containing blood or blood-like material, or severe breathing difficulty. Do not delay urgent care to complete a diary. A record can be useful afterward, but it is never a substitute for assessment when warning signs are present.
Preparing for an appointment
- Bring the diary in its original time order, including symptom-free days.
- Mark any suspected pattern, but distinguish observations from conclusions.
- List current medicines, supplements and any recent changes.
- Note how long symptoms have been recurring and whether they affect eating, sleep or daily activities.
- Ask before attempting an elimination diet, low-FODMAP plan or major fiber change.
With complete timing, portion and symptom information, your clinician has a clearer starting point for deciding what—if anything—should be tested or changed next.
