Use a chair mat made for hard floors—not a carpet mat with cleats—and check that its backing is approved for your specific hardwood and finish. If a suitable mat still shifts, clean and dry the contact surfaces, make sure the mat lies flat and covers the chair’s full travel path, then consider compatible anti-slip backing or a thin underlayment.
Start with a mat made for hard floors
Carpet mats often use cleats or grippers to bite into carpet. Those are not a hardwood solution: American Floor Mats says not to use carpet chair mats on wood, tile, stone, concrete or vinyl. Its hard-surface mat guidance describes a smooth backing instead. American Floor Mats’ chair mat guidance

For ordinary hard floors, a smooth mat may be appropriate. On polished or high-gloss flooring, a chair-mat user guide recommends smooth mats with anti-slip backing to reduce slippage. That does not mean every non-slip backing is safe on every finish; check the flooring maker’s care instructions and the mat maker’s compatibility information before placing it down. Tarkett North America’s hardwood guidance warns that rubber backings and dyes can discolor engineered wood and advises checking with the rug or pad manufacturer.
Troubleshoot a mat that keeps moving

Clean and dry both contact surfaces
Lift the mat and sweep or vacuum grit from the floor and its underside. Wipe away dirt or moisture, then let both surfaces dry fully before replacing it. Grit trapped beneath a mat can scratch or abrade the finish, and moisture should not be sealed under floor protection. Check that the mat lies flat
A curled or uneven edge can make a mat easier to catch or shift. If it arrived rolled, unroll it and place it on a flat surface to recover its shape. American Floor Mats says some rolled mats may take up to 72 hours to regain their natural shape; that is its guidance, not a universal recovery time for every mat. Cover the full chair travel path
Position the mat so the casters remain on it throughout normal movement. A user guide warns that casters repeatedly rolling off and back onto a mat can contribute to movement. If the chair often rolls beyond an edge, a larger mat may help more than adding grip to an undersized one. Chair-mat user guide

Consider compatible anti-slip backing or an underlayment
If the mat is appropriate for the floor but still slides, consider a mat with anti-slip backing for polished surfaces, or a thin underlayment beneath the existing mat. Wolfe Flooring recommends a thin underlayment when a mat will not remain stationary, but that does not establish that any generic rug pad is suitable beneath a rolling chair mat. Confirm compatibility with both the flooring and mat manufacturers before use; the layer must not damage the finish or make chair rolling unstable.

Choose between a replacement mat and an underlayment

There is no established best backing or underlayment for every hardwood species and finish. Tarkett’s warning about rubber backing and dyes is especially relevant to engineered wood, so do not assume that a product labeled “non-slip” or “rubber-backed” is automatically floor-safe.

Thickness guidance also varies by surface. Wolfe Flooring recommends 110 mil (0.11 inch) mats for smooth hardwood and 170 mil (0.17 inch) for irregular hardwood. Those are Wolfe Flooring’s recommendations, not universal industry standards. Wolfe Flooring maintenance guidance

Lift the mat periodically to remove grit and check for trapped moisture or changes to the finish. Keep the mat and floor clean and dry before putting it back. Follow the flooring manufacturer’s care guidance for cleaning and for any material placed against the floor.
