If OBS loses a playlist, first find out whether the problem is local playback or whether YouTube has stopped receiving the encoder feed. If YouTube still receives video and audio, use a prepared fallback scene while volunteers restore the OBS source. If ingest is offline, switch to a rehearsed backup encoder or recovery plan. A stream-key reset does not restore a missing OBS playlist.
First determine what viewers are seeing
- Check the YouTube player. Is it showing the expected service, a frozen or blank picture, a fallback scene, or no stream? Check whether sound is present too.
- Check Live Control Room separately. Confirm whether YouTube is still receiving incoming video and audio. A connected encoder can continue sending a picture even when OBS is displaying the wrong scene or no longer playing the expected media.
- Classify the failure. If the feed reaches YouTube but the content is wrong, investigate OBS playback and switch to your fallback scene. If YouTube reports that the feed is offline, follow your rehearsed encoder recovery or backup-feed procedure.

Recover the OBS playback without disrupting the stream
Check the scene and source
In OBS, confirm that the scene intended for the service is selected and that the expected playlist or media source is still present and active. Check whether the source is visible in the scene and whether the expected media file or playlist is still available. If you have a prepared fallback scene, switch to it while someone investigates the primary source; a still announcement slide with suitable audio is more useful to viewers than a frozen or blank feed.

Keep YouTube ingest settings separate from playback
A stream key and server URL connect the encoder to YouTube. If OBS is still sending a feed, changing the key is unlikely to fix a local source that stopped playing. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting says an encoder-start error may require creating a new stream key and updating the encoder; use that remedy only when the symptoms point to an ingest or encoder-start problem. YouTube’s stream settings guidance explains stream keys and settings such as auto-start and auto-stop, whose availability and effect depend on the selected stream configuration.
When OBS or the encoder feed has stopped
If YouTube no longer receives the feed, use the church’s rehearsed recovery plan. That may mean restarting the primary encoder or switching to a separately prepared backup encoder feed. Whether viewers can continue watching through a handoff depends on the church’s particular setup; do not assume that a secondary encoder can recover the primary computer’s playlist.

YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Rehearse the actual handoff before a service, including what viewers see and hear, how volunteers coordinate the switch, and whether YouTube continues to receive a valid feed. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance covers testing and monitoring encoder streams.

Prepare before the next service
- Set up the encoder ahead of the event, start it before the scheduled stream, and inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live.
- Test the complete stream and monitor YouTube’s stream-health status and messages while live. YouTube says to review stream health during the event. Its stream-health guidance describes the checks.
- Test any backup encoder by deliberately stopping the primary encoder, then confirm that the viewer-facing player rolls over as expected. A backup should be tested with the church’s own equipment and workflow.
- Keep a local recording and verify that its file grows during the event, as part of encoder preparation.
- After the event, record the OBS version, source type, whether the playlist file still exists, whether the source was visible, and whether YouTube showed incoming video and audio. These details help distinguish a local playback fault from an ingest failure.
If the encoder supports RTMPS, YouTube documents it as an encrypted transport option. You can obtain the RTMPS server URL in Live Control Room and use it with the stream key. RTMPS may improve transport security; it does not repair a lost OBS playlist. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain the setup.
