How to Keep a Church YouTube Live Stream from Showing an Ended Broadcast Between Services

To show a waiting screen between church services, keep the YouTube broadcast and encoder running, then switch the encoder output from the service to a prepared holding slide or looped video. Switch back to the live program when the next service begins. Do not select End Stream for an intermission: that ends the broadcast rather than creating a waiting screen.

This approach keeps one live event and watch page open through the break. If you want a separate watch page for each service, schedule each stream separately instead.

Choose between one continuous stream and separate service pages

What you want Workflow What viewers see
One watch page for consecutive services Keep the encoder connected and the YouTube broadcast active; show a holding scene between services. The same live event remains open, with the holding output during the interval.
A distinct watch page for each service Schedule the next encoder stream in advance. After the current stream ends, Live Redirect can send viewers to another live stream or a Premiere. Each service has its own page. YouTube says to set up the Premiere before the live stream if using one as the redirect destination.

The holding-scene method is an encoder-side production choice, not a special YouTube holding-screen feature documented by YouTube. Rehearse it in your encoder; controls and behavior can differ between encoders.

Set up a holding scene before the service

  1. Prepare the intermission output. In your encoder, create a scene or source for a church-approved still image or looped announcement video. Mute its audio, or use only background audio the church is licensed to use.
  2. Check the transition. Test switching from the service camera or program scene to the holding output and back. YouTube recommends checking the preview before starting and testing and monitoring the stream.
  3. Start the broadcast as usual. Confirm the encoder is sending the intended program and that the YouTube preview looks right before beginning the service.

Run the intermission without ending the broadcast

  1. When the first service ends, use the encoder’s scene or source controls to switch to the holding output.
  2. Leave the encoder connected and the YouTube broadcast active during the break. Do not click End Stream just to create an intermission.
  3. When the next service is ready, switch the encoder output back to the live program.
  4. After the final service, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder. YouTube Help’s live streaming tips say: “After your event has stopped on YouTube, stop the encoder.”

The sequence for using a holding scene follows from YouTube’s encoder workflow; YouTube’s cited instructions do not prescribe a particular scene-switching feature or guarantee that every encoder behaves identically.

  • CLOSED CAPTIONS, TIMECODE & REST API – Supports embedding CEA-608 and CEA-708 closed captions in live RTMP streams, source timecode over RTMP and SRT, and offers a REST API over Ethernet for external HTTP control — ideal for broadcast automation and accessibility-compliant workflows.

Manage the replay separately from the live screen

A finished service replay remaining on the channel is an archive issue, not a between-services display. YouTube automatically archives live streams shorter than 12 hours. After the event, use YouTube Studio to change the archive’s visibility or delete it if you do not want it on the channel. These actions manage the replay; they do not create a live waiting screen.

Stream keys, scheduling, and continuity

A stream key identifies the encoder’s stream settings; reusing a custom key does not by itself make separate services one continuous event. Decide first whether you want one ongoing watch page or separate scheduled pages. For separate pages, schedule the next encoder stream and consider YouTube Live Redirect to direct viewers from the ended event to the next live stream or an eligible Premiere.

Troubleshoot a missing or wrong intermission screen

  • The page says the broadcast ended: The event was ended rather than left active. For one continuous page, keep the broadcast and encoder running during the interval; rehearse the scene switch beforehand.
  • Viewers still see the service camera: The encoder may still be outputting the program scene. Check the active scene or source and confirm the holding output appears in the encoder preview.
  • The holding screen appears, but there is no sound: Check the holding scene’s audio sources and mute settings. Use background audio only if the church has the necessary rights.
  • The next service is on a different page: That is expected when using separate scheduled streams. Schedule the next stream in advance; if using Live Redirect, prepare its destination as required, including setting up a Premiere before the live stream.
  • The completed replay is still visible: Change the archive’s visibility or delete it in YouTube Studio. Ending or hiding the archive does not replace the live intermission workflow.
