But a desktop and home internet connection cannot guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 service, and a YouTube stream that runs longer than 12 hours may not be saved as a replay. Test the complete setup before relying on it, and keep a separate copy of the yoga video.
What you need before you start
This setup is for broadcasting prepared yoga footage as a live stream—not for going live from a camera. The desktop runs encoder software, which sends video to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow and channel prerequisites are described in its encoder setup guide and live streaming tips.

- A YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream. It must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming activation may take up to 24 hours.
- A refurbished desktop capable of encoding the intended video continuously, with enough free storage if you plan to record a local copy.
- A stable internet connection. Measure upload speed at the location where the desktop will run; advertised download speed is not a substitute.
- An encoder that supports YouTube’s workflow, plus the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio.
- The rights to stream the video and all included audio. A live broadcast is not exempt from copyright or other YouTube policies.
There is no universal minimum PC specification established here: the right setting depends on the desktop’s hardware, software, condition and sustained thermal performance. A short successful test does not show that an older computer or local connection can run indefinitely.

- Enable live streaming if needed. Complete the channel verification and eligibility checks in YouTube. If this is your first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule the broadcast, choose the encoder workflow and obtain the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain this route.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings.
- Choose broadcast controls deliberately. Review auto-start and auto-stop settings in Live Control Room and test what they do before relying on them. YouTube documents these options in Manage live stream settings.
Choose settings the refurbished desktop can sustain
Use the same yoga footage, movement and audio you intend to broadcast when testing. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams for viewers, so sending the highest possible resolution is not automatically beneficial. Start conservatively, then raise quality only if the encoder remains stable and the connection has sufficient upload headroom.

These are YouTube’s published settings ranges, not a guarantee that a particular refurbished PC can encode reliably at either profile. For a mostly static or gently moving yoga scene, test 720p30 first if the machine struggles. Check the encoder’s CPU or GPU load, temperature and dropped-frame indicators over a meaningful test period.
- Rate control: YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Use a frame rate the source and desktop can handle; higher is not necessary for every yoga video.
- Transport: Prefer RTMPS if the encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as the encrypted version of RTMP; see Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
Measure upload speed and protect the connection
The total stream bitrate must fit the upload bandwidth available to the encoder. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom, because other devices and users may consume bandwidth and connection conditions can change. Measure upload speed—not download speed—at the desktop’s actual location, and repeat the check during the time household or office internet use is busiest. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream; its streaming tips cover bandwidth and reliability.

- Where practical, connect the desktop to the router by Ethernet. A cable can avoid some Wi-Fi instability, but it cannot fix an ISP outage or weak upstream service.
- Reduce competing uploads and large transfers during the broadcast, and account for other people sharing the connection.
- A second internet connection may help only if it is independently available and configured for failover. Availability and performance depend on your address; check local upload performance and service terms rather than assuming a provider or plan will work.
Plan for power, recordings and stream continuity
Protect against local power interruptions
A UPS is an optional resilience measure, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Size it for the combined desktop and router load and the outage duration you need to cover. Check the equipment’s power draw, runtime at that load, battery replacement and support before choosing a unit.

Do not rely on a day-long stream for its replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep the original yoga video and, if you need a replay, make a separate local recording. Test that the recording file is created, has enough disk space and continues to grow during the broadcast. Decide how to handle long-running broadcasts
If you plan to use separate broadcasts instead of one stream longer than 12 hours, decide in advance how you will handle the transition and any interruption viewers may see. Check current daily stream limits and settings in Studio. YouTube documents common live-stream errors at Live streaming error messages; neither those controls nor a planned transition guarantee seamless broadcasting or indefinite uptime.
Test, monitor and recover
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast. Start the encoder early enough to inspect the Live Control Room preview and health indicators before the intended viewing period.
- Check the actual viewer experience. Open the watch page on the devices your audience is likely to use, including a phone, and confirm picture, sound and playback.
- Monitor encoder and stream health. Watch for dropped frames, audio problems, overheating, upload instability and YouTube warnings. YouTube advises monitoring stream quality continuously.
- Test backups if you have configured them. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over. This only applies if a real backup encoder has been set up.
- Protect credentials and local files. Keep the stream key private, reset it if compromised, and verify that any local recording is intact.
Troubleshooting common failures
