You can run a YouTube live stream around the clock from a Windows laptop with OBS Studio, but only if the laptop stays awake and powered, the encoder and upload connection can sustain your chosen settings, and someone can respond when a problem does not recover automatically. Use the steps below to configure and test the setup before leaving it unattended. OBS reconnect can help after some interruptions; it cannot guarantee 24/7 uptime.
Before you start: check channel and laptop readiness
- YouTube eligibility: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the channel before planning a broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Windows and OBS: OBS Studio supports Windows 10 and Windows 11. That operating-system requirement does not establish that your particular laptop can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate smoothly. OBS recommends running its Auto-Configuration Wizard and testing the result. See the OBS system requirements and Quick Start Guide.
- Power and network: Plan to keep the laptop’s power adapter connected and confirm that your internet connection’s sustained upload capacity is adequate. For India, check your own provider’s upload and data limits; there is no single plan or power-backup recommendation that applies to every location and setup.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Create or select a stream: In YouTube Studio, open Go Live to enter the Live Control Room. Create a stream or select one you already made, then set its title, privacy, and other metadata. YouTube’s guide is Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the connection details: In the stream settings, copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into OBS. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if you think someone else has obtained it. See Manage live stream settings.
- Run OBS’s setup wizard: Open OBS Studio and use Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard. Apply the settings it recommends, then test with the scene and audio you intend to use. The wizard can guide configuration, but it cannot prove that a laptop will remain stable for a full day.
- Check the YouTube preview: Start streaming from OBS and wait for the feed preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Check stream health before making the stream public or relying on it. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream quality; see its encoder setup guide and streaming tips.
Choose bitrate and quality for your actual connection
Use measured upload capacity, not download speed, to judge what your stream can sustain. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom and warns that other people or devices using the same connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. Its guidance is to keep total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth; a connectivity disruption can break a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

For H.264, YouTube’s recommended video bitrates include these reference points. They are platform recommendations, not guaranteed minimum internet-plan speeds; allow additional capacity for headroom, other traffic, and any backup stream.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s settings guidance recommends CBR, H.264, and a two-second keyframe interval, with the interval not exceeding four seconds. Consult Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the platform’s current recommendations. Start at a quality your laptop and connection can handle, run a representative test, and raise resolution or frame rate only if stream health remains stable.

Stop Windows from sleeping during the stream
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Set the plugged in sleep timeout so the laptop stays awake for the intended broadcast. Screen-off and sleep are separate controls: turning off the display need not mean the computer is asleep, but test that OBS continues sending when the screen goes dark.
Menu names can differ across Windows versions, and laptop makers may add their own power-management controls. Verify the behavior on your specific machine rather than assuming the setting took effect. Microsoft’s instructions are at Power settings in Windows 11.
Build a realistic plan for 24/7 operation
Power and heat
Keep the laptop’s adapter connected and check that the computer remains on after the screen turns off. Charging behavior, adapter requirements, and thermal limits vary by model. Monitor CPU or GPU load and temperatures during a long test; do not assume that a laptop stable for a short session will stay stable continuously. A UPS may help during a power interruption, but choose one only after checking the laptop adapter and network equipment’s load and the runtime you need.

Connection and interruptions
A compatible Ethernet connection is an option if you want a wired path between the laptop and router. It does not raise the upload capacity of your ISP plan or fix an outage at the provider. Check upload performance where and when you plan to stream, leave headroom, and account for other users and devices on the network.
Reconnect, restart, and monitoring
OBS has an automatic reconnect setting; enable it and test how it behaves after a brief network interruption. Reconnect is a recovery aid, not a fix for a prolonged outage, power loss, a hung encoder, overheating, or a Windows restart. OBS also documents a --startstreaming launch parameter, but automating startup does not replace monitoring or ensure that the stream recovers correctly after every failure. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide and OBS launch parameters.
Check the Live Control Room’s stream health and view the public watch page from a separate device. If nobody will be watching the laptop, decide who will receive alerts and restart or troubleshoot the broadcast when automatic recovery is not enough.

Test before leaving it unattended
- Run a long test using the real scene, audio, resolution, and frame rate.
- Confirm OBS is sending, YouTube shows a healthy feed, and the public watch page plays.
- Turn off the display and verify the laptop does not sleep or stop encoding.
- Test a deliberate brief network interruption and confirm what OBS and YouTube do when the connection returns.
- Watch system load and temperatures on this laptop, and confirm that your monitoring and restart plan is workable.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; the result depends on your particular laptop, connection, and local conditions. A test can expose problems, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted service.
Plan for a complete recording
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That condition does not promise that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be saved as a complete replay. If a full recording matters, configure a separate local recording and verify that the file is growing and plays correctly, or split the broadcast into shorter sessions and confirm each archive. Leave enough storage for the recording. YouTube discusses archiving and local recording checks in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and its streaming tips.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS disconnects or stream health deteriorates | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating; other devices may be consuming bandwidth. | Check sustained upload performance, reduce bitrate or output settings, leave more headroom, and retest. Ethernet can change the laptop-to-router link, not the ISP’s capacity. |
| The stream stops after the screen goes dark | The laptop may have entered sleep despite the display being off being a separate control. | Set the plugged-in sleep timeout to keep the system awake and test screen-off behavior again. |
| YouTube does not receive a feed | The server URL or stream key may be incorrect, or the stream may not have been started in OBS. | Recheck the connection details in YouTube Studio and OBS. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS. |
| OBS reconnects but the broadcast does not resume | The interruption may be longer or caused by power loss, a hung encoder, overheating, or a restart. | Check the laptop, router, and Live Control Room directly; reconnect cannot resolve every failure. Use the operator response plan to restart and verify the feed. |
| The 24-hour broadcast has no complete replay | YouTube’s stated automatic archive condition applies to streams under 12 hours. | Use a verified local recording or shorter sessions when a complete archive is required. |
