To monetize a 24/7 YouTube stream, your channel must be in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), you must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module for Watch Page ad and Premium revenue, and monetization must be enabled for the live stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. That setup makes ads possible, not certain: YouTube does not guarantee an ad for every slot or viewer. Long broadcasts also have an archive risk: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping an archive or earning qualified watch hours matters, plan broadcasts in segments shorter than 12 hours and keep a local recording backup.
What you need before turning on live monetization
- YPP membership: Your channel must be in the YouTube Partner Program to earn from YouTube monetization features.
- Watch Page Monetization Module: Accept this module to receive Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue. Enabling monetization for a stream is not a substitute for accepting the module.
- A compliant broadcast: YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. You also need the necessary rights to the material and must follow Community Guidelines and advertiser-friendly content rules.
Even with these requirements met, actual ad delivery depends on YouTube’s systems and ad demand. YouTube’s guidance says, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.”
Enable monetization and choose a mid-roll approach
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the broadcast.
- Turn on monetization for the stream. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when stream monetization is on.
- Choose how to handle mid-roll ads: automatic, scheduled, or manual. Automatic mid-rolls are YouTube’s recommended option.
- Before an important program moment, use the Live Control Room control to delay automatic mid-roll ads for 10 minutes if available. Manually placed mid-rolls can still display during a delay.
Mid-roll settings influence when ad opportunities may occur; they do not guarantee that YouTube will fill an opportunity with an ad.
How the mid-roll options differ

YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour for channels that enabled live automatic mid-rolls compared with channels that did not. This was YouTube’s comparison across 207 countries in January 2024; it is not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel or a 24/7 broadcast.

Plan for the 12-hour archive limit
A continuous 24/7 broadcast may not leave you with a complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local archive backup, and cautions that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours.
YouTube’s qualified-watch-hours guidance, published August 12, 2026, says that watch time from public long-form videos and archived livestreams can qualify; livestreams that are not archived do not count as qualified watch hours. If archive preservation or qualified watch-hour accumulation matters, ending and restarting in planned segments shorter than 12 hours is a practical option. This is an archive and audience-history choice, not a way to improve ad eligibility or guarantee impressions.

Keep the content eligible for monetization
There is no blanket rule that makes every looped livestream monetizable. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams as well as other videos. On July 15, 2025, YouTube said it renamed its “repetitious content” policy to “inauthentic content,” clarifying that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under the existing policy; YouTube also said its reused-content policy had not changed. That clarification does not grant automatic approval to a 24/7 loop.
- Use original material or provide meaningful value beyond repeatedly playing material without substantial creator contribution.
- Have the rights needed for every video, audio track, image, and other element in the stream. Owning a file does not by itself establish that all necessary rights are cleared.
- Review the live content and its title, thumbnail, description, and tags against advertiser-friendly requirements. Content can remain available on YouTube while receiving limited or no ads.
- If an automated ad-suitability decision appears mistaken, eligible creators can request human review.
Run the broadcast yourself or let it run in the cloud
Do-it-yourself: keep an encoder running
YouTube supports several ways to go live, including an encoder, mobile device, webcam, or console. For a continuous, pre-recorded program, an encoder-based workflow is one option; no particular hardware encoder is required by the monetization rules. Plan how you will keep the source media, encoder, internet connection, and local recording available, and how you will manage planned restarts if you need broadcasts shorter than 12 hours for archive purposes.

Regardless of how you send the stream, monetization remains a YouTube Studio and channel-policy matter. An encoder or cloud service can keep a broadcast running; neither guarantees YPP eligibility, ad suitability, or ad delivery.
