End and restart the broadcast in sessions planned to finish before YouTube’s 12-hour threshold. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. For a separate safety copy, record locally in OBS at the same time and check that the file is growing.
Why one 24/7 stream can become an archive problem
YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all, so leaving a single broadcast live around the clock is not a reliable way to produce a saved video. The threshold is YouTube’s operational guidance, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully. YouTube’s archive guidance explains the limit.

The practical approach is to make the broadcast a sequence of shorter sessions. Plan each one to end with margin before it reaches 12 hours, then start another. Each restart is a new live session: YouTube’s instructions do not promise that successive sessions will share one watch URL, chat, or uninterrupted viewer experience.
Choose how you’ll preserve the stream
| Approach | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| End and restart before 12 hours | Keeps each session within YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance. | Requires transitions, and continuity of URL and chat is not guaranteed. |
| Record locally while streaming | Creates a separate copy on your computer or chosen storage destination. | Uses storage and system resources; recording quality other than “Same as stream” uses extra resources in OBS. |
| Use both | Combines shorter YouTube sessions with an independent local backup. | You must monitor the broadcast and the recording destination. |
YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. A local recording is independent of YouTube’s archive; it does not change the platform’s archive behavior. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

Set up shorter YouTube live sessions
- Prepare the session in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, create or select the live stream, and connect your encoder using the stream URL and stream key. Check the preview before starting. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow for setup and ending a stream.
- Choose an end time with margin. Schedule the session to finish comfortably before 12 hours. The margin is a practical precaution; YouTube’s published threshold is the sourced limit, not a recommended schedule for every channel.
- Tell viewers a transition is coming. Before ending, explain that the current session is closing and a new one will follow. Share the next session’s link if you have created it. Do not assume viewers, chat, or the existing watch URL will carry over.
- End the current session and start the next one. Use the Live Control Room and encoder workflow to stop the feed, then begin the next session. Treat it as a potentially distinct watch page.
- Check the archives afterward. YouTube says prior, current, and upcoming streams can be found in the Live tab in Studio. Review each session there and check that the expected archive is available.
Record a local backup in OBS
OBS can record while streaming and lets you choose where recordings are saved. Set up and test the recording before relying on it for a long broadcast. OBS’s Standard Recording Output Guide covers recording output and paths.
- Choose a recording destination. In OBS, open Settings → Output → Recording and set the recording path to a drive with enough free space. An external drive is one possible destination. Estimate capacity from your bitrate, planned recording time, and how long you intend to keep files; there is no universal storage amount for every quality and retention plan.
- Select a recording format. OBS recommends MKV when resilience to an ungraceful stop matters: an interrupted MKV recording is less likely to lose the entire file. Some editing workflows may not accept MKV directly, so you may need to remux it to a more compatible format. See OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide for format trade-offs.
- Decide whether to match the stream quality. OBS offers “Same as stream” for recording quality. Recording at another quality uses extra system resources, so test the exact streaming and recording setup before a long run. Do not assume every computer can handle both at any quality without performance impact.
- Run a short test. Start a private or otherwise suitable test broadcast and confirm the local file opens, contains audio and video, and is saved to the intended location. Test the workflow before depending on it for an extended session.
- Watch the recording during the broadcast. Confirm that the file remains intact and its size continues to grow. Also monitor the live stream’s accessibility and audio/video quality. YouTube recommends checking local archive integrity and file growth in its live streaming tips.
Don’t confuse DVR with the saved archive
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream; it is not the setting that breaks a long stream into smaller archived videos. YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the stream began. Turning DVR off does not remove the later recording of the whole stream once it is available. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Common problems and fixes
- The long stream has no archive. It may have exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. Plan shorter sessions and verify each archive in Studio’s Live tab; the guidance does not guarantee that every session under the limit will be captured.
- The next session has a different link or chat. A restart creates a new live session. Share the new link with viewers and do not promise URL or chat continuity.
- The local recording is missing or not growing. Check OBS’s recording path, destination drive availability, free space, and whether recording actually started. Confirm file growth during the next test or live run rather than waiting until the end.
- An interrupted recording will not open cleanly. OBS recommends MKV for resilience to an ungraceful stop. If an MKV does not fit your editor, remux it for compatibility using an appropriate workflow; test the result before deleting the original.
- The stream stutters after recording starts. Recording at a quality other than “Same as stream” uses extra resources in OBS. Test the configuration, reduce resource demands if needed, or use a recording setup your computer can sustain.
- Viewers cannot rewind far enough. That is a DVR limitation, especially on very long live streams; DVR does not determine whether YouTube later archives the session.
