The VPS keeps the process running without a home computer, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery: test the selected server’s sustained route to YouTube, protect the stream key, and plan separately for archives because streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
How the VPS-to-YouTube setup works
The basic path is media files on the server → encoder → YouTube Live ingest. The playlist supplies the prerecorded video and audio; the encoder produces the outgoing feed; YouTube receives that feed and presents a live event to viewers.

YouTube’s API distinguishes the watchable event, called a liveBroadcast, from the feed configuration, called a liveStream. They are related but not interchangeable. Google documents a use case in which a channel keeps a 24/7 broadcast going while creating a separate broadcast for an interview, so a continuous feed does not necessarily mean every program must share one watch page. Google’s broadcasts and streams overview explains the distinction.
Choose an encoder and delivery settings
Use YouTube’s published encoder guidance as the starting point, then test the actual VPS and region you intend to use. YouTube recommends RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. H.264 bitrate examples
The following are YouTube’s published H.264 minimum and recommended ingest bitrates, not measured performance of an OVHcloud VPS:

These are YouTube’s current published values as accessed in 2026. Allow headroom above the selected video bitrate for audio and network variation. Do not infer sustained delivery from an OVHcloud plan’s advertised network figure: route quality and achievable upload can vary by instance and region. Test sustained throughput from the server you will actually use, and choose an output that remains stable rather than relying on a plan’s peak claim.

Decide whether to transcode
If the media files already meet your chosen output format and settings, a workflow that sends compatible pre-encoded media can avoid real-time video encoding work. If the encoder must transcode, measure CPU use while it runs at the intended resolution and frame rate. This is an engineering choice to verify on your own workload; no OVHcloud-specific benchmark or tested FFmpeg command is established here.
FFmpeg or OBS
FFmpeg is a command-line-oriented option suited to headless automation and playlist workflows; OBS offers a graphical scene and mixer workflow. These are workflow distinctions, not a performance ranking. The exact media-looping command and service-manager configuration depend on the operating system, files, and current tool versions, so verify those details against the tools’ official documentation before relying on an unattended setup. An independent example is available at Space-Node’s 24/7 VPS streaming article, but it is not a validated recipe for OVHcloud.

Create the YouTube stream and connect the encoder

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast you intend to run. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for creating a stream with an encoder; available controls may depend on the channel and its access.

Choose the stream settings and obtain the server URL and stream key shown for the selected stream. Configure the encoder to send its feed to YouTube using the recommended RTMPS option where supported.

Set the encoder to match the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate mode, audio format, and keyframe interval. Check the output against YouTube’s live encoder guidance rather than assuming a source file’s properties will produce the desired stream automatically.

Run a private or unlisted test with representative motion, audio, and playlist transitions. Check that the video and sound are correct and review YouTube’s stream-health messages before relying on the setup.

Once the test is satisfactory, start the broadcast and keep monitoring the encoder process, the VPS, and YouTube’s health indicators.
Protect the stream key
YouTube describes the key as the information that tells the encoder where to send the feed and warns that it is like a password. Keep it in a restricted configuration or secret store, limit who can read it, and avoid putting it in a public repository, screenshots, or logs. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers stream keys and settings.
If you believe the key has been exposed, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it through Live Control Room and then update the encoder with the replacement. Treat this as credential rotation: a changed key means the old encoder configuration must also be updated.
Operate and monitor the stream
Before leaving a stream unattended, test the exact playlist and operating setup. YouTube advises testing and checking stream health; representative content should include typical movement and audio, not just a static opening frame. During operation, watch for health warnings and confirm that the encoder is still sending a feed.

- Check the media source: confirm files are readable, playlist order is correct, and transitions do not leave the output without video or audio.
- Check the encoder: confirm it remains active and is producing the selected output settings.
- Check the network path: confirm sustained outbound delivery from the chosen VPS and region, not merely brief peak throughput.
- Check YouTube: watch Live Control Room for stream-health messages and verify the broadcast is live as expected.
- Plan for recovery: a process supervisor or restart policy can help relaunch software after a process failure, but it does not prevent failures in the VPS, route, media, or YouTube. No particular watchdog or systemd configuration is established as tested here.

Choose a broadcast and archive strategy
One ongoing broadcast or separate program periods
A single continuous broadcast keeps one live event running, while separate broadcasts can give distinct programming periods their own events and watch pages. Google documents a 24/7 broadcast coexisting with a separate interview broadcast in its API use cases. Decide based on how viewers should find the programming and how you need to manage events; this choice does not remove the archive-duration limitation.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is not a promise that every stream under that threshold will be archived in every circumstance. If preserving the full program matters, arrange local recording and consider shorter broadcast segments; verify your channel settings and test the actual archive workflow. - Encoding workload: real-time transcoding can use substantially more CPU than sending already encoded compatible media. Measure CPU during a representative run.
- Media library: estimate storage for all files and leave room for operating-system files, logs, and any local recordings you decide to keep.
- Network: measure sustained upload toward YouTube from the selected instance and region at the intended stream settings. Leave headroom and observe stability over time.
- Region and plan availability: check the current OVHcloud catalog for your intended purchase region; plan offerings and network details can change.
Do not treat product-page bandwidth as proof of an uninterrupted route or a particular encoder’s capacity. A private or unlisted test on the selected instance is the practical way to find bottlenecks before a public launch.
