A continuous 24/7 YouTube livestream is not a reliable way to create one complete replay: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. To keep replays, divide the broadcast into sessions shorter than 12 hours; to manage existing archives, change their visibility or delete them in YouTube Studio. Keep a local recording if you need a separate copy before removing an online replay.
Why a 24/7 stream may not produce a complete archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is an archive-capture risk, not a maximum file size or storage quota. Do not assume that a single uninterrupted day-long broadcast will yield one complete replay.

If retaining replays matters, plan shorter broadcast sessions that stay under 12 hours. This is a practical inference from YouTube’s threshold, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be archived. YouTube’s guidance does not provide a target archive size, storage-per-hour estimate, or music-only bitrate for this purpose.
Choose what should happen to each existing replay
Decide based on whether viewers should still find the session, whether you want to retain an online copy, and whether you need a local backup before removing it.

YouTube’s cited guidance documents visibility and deletion controls, but does not specify age-based automatic retention or bulk deletion. Hiding or deleting an archive affects the online replay’s availability; neither action compresses or reduces the size of the source recording.
Change visibility or delete an archive in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content, then the Live tab.
- Find the archive and open its details to change Visibility, or use its More menu and choose Delete.
- For a visibility change, select the intended privacy setting and save. For deletion, check that you selected the right replay and that you no longer need its online copy; deletion is permanent.
YouTube describes these controls for managing archives; it does not describe a Studio setting here for compressing replays or automatically deleting them after a chosen age.

Keep a local backup when the recording matters
YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. A local copy gives you another version to retain before deleting a YouTube replay; it does not reduce the archive’s size on YouTube.
- While recording, check that the local file exists, is intact, and is growing in size.
- Allow upload bandwidth headroom of 20% above the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup streams, as YouTube recommends.
- Before deleting an online replay, confirm that the local copy is usable if you intend to rely on it.
YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a drive model, capacity, or paid backup service. File size depends on the actual recording bitrate and duration, so a specific storage-per-hour estimate cannot be given without those inputs.
