A supervisor cannot keep a failed VPS, network connection, media file, or YouTube ingest endpoint available, so this is a self-managed setup—not an uptime guarantee. YouTube may take up to 24 hours to enable live streaming for a channel for the first time.
What you need before you start
- An Indian VPS whose provider terms allow continuous outbound video streaming. Check its region, sustained CPU and network limits, included outbound transfer, storage, and overage charges before buying. No current low-cost plan or bandwidth allowance is established here, so verify the provider’s live terms rather than assuming a monthly instance includes enough transfer.
- A Linux server with FFmpeg and systemd. The exact package-install command depends on the VPS distribution.
- A video file stored on the VPS, with rights to use its audio, video, and any other included material.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus the YouTube server URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Enough outbound capacity for an uninterrupted feed. A continuous stream uses network transfer around the clock, so bandwidth is a central cost, not a minor extra.
Configure YouTube Live for an encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select a live stream using the encoder workflow. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, allow up to 24 hours for live streaming activation.
- Use RTMPS where YouTube provides it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the maximum keyframe interval is four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Select settings for the codec and resolution you actually send. For H.264, YouTube’s guidance lists 4 Mbps minimum and 4 Mbps recommended for 480p at 30 fps; 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p at 30 fps; and 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps. These figures are specific to H.264 and those resolutions/frame rates; other codecs have separate guidance. Do not assume a nearly static image makes a lower rate approved or visually acceptable.
- Before relying on the stream, test with representative audio and movement, then check YouTube’s stream-health indicators. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps; use a combination supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current guidance.
Loop a local video with FFmpeg
First place the file on the VPS and confirm its path and streams with FFmpeg’s inspection tools. Then test a loop manually before configuring automatic startup. Replace the example file path, server URL, and key below with your own values; do not paste a real stream key into a public script, screenshot, or shared log.

The 8 Mbps video setting matches YouTube’s listed H.264 recommended rate for 720p30, but the command does not scale the source to 720p: output resolution follows the input unless you add a video filter. Choose a rate appropriate to the source resolution and YouTube’s codec-specific guidance. The stream must also fit the VPS’s sustained CPU and network capacity. If FFmpeg reports a missing encoder or cannot sustain real-time encoding, use a supported FFmpeg build or a lower-complexity output configuration and test again.

Start FFmpeg on boot and restart it after a process exit
On a systemd-based Linux VPS, put the command in a service unit so it starts at boot and systemd restarts it if the FFmpeg process exits. Store the stream key in a root-readable environment file rather than embedding it in a unit that other users can read.
- Create a protected environment file such as
/etc/ffmpeg-mantra.envcontaining the destination URL, including the private key. Set ownership and permissions so only the service’s trusted administrator can read it. - Create a systemd unit such as
/etc/systemd/system/mantra-stream.service. Configure its service command to run FFmpeg with the tested arguments, load the environment file, and setRestart=alwayswith a shortRestartSecdelay. Run it as a dedicated, unprivileged service account that can read the media file. - Reload systemd, enable the service at boot, and start it. Check its state and recent logs with
systemctl status mantra-streamandjournalctl -u mantra-stream. - Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and reports healthy video and audio. Keep enough local storage for the source file and any logs you retain.
A restart policy handles an FFmpeg process exit; it does not restore a deleted or unreadable source file, repair a VPS or route outage, or ensure YouTube accepts the connection. A third-party India VPS guide describes FFmpeg looping with systemd as an implementation pattern, not proof that a particular server will sustain a particular workload.

Plan for archives, rights, and monetization
One endless session is not an archive guarantee
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its documentation does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 session will remain a single complete recording. If you need an archive, design for session boundaries and retain the source media independently; do not rely on an endless live session as your only copy.

Check every recording and visual
Confirm that you have the rights needed for each mantra recording, image, video, and other asset. Permission to use material does not by itself settle YouTube monetization eligibility. YouTube’s monetization policy update dated 15 July 2025 clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content is “inauthentic content”; highly repetitive material with little variation or added value can be ineligible. Reused-content eligibility is separate from copyright enforcement, and YouTube says reused content may fail its monetization policy even when the uploader has permission. These policies do not determine the copyright status of any particular recording. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Estimate the real VPS cost
Compare the complete recurring cost, not just the advertised virtual-machine price. The encoder sends a continuous feed, so check sustained outbound bandwidth, transfer caps, overage rates, storage, CPU limits, region, and provider support. Also consider who will inspect logs and recover the service when the process or server fails. Current India-region VPS prices and included transfer allowances are not established here; verify the provider’s official terms before choosing a plan.
Google Cloud Live Stream API is a separate managed encoding and delivery service billed according to active channel time and configuration, including resolution and codec. Its pricing is not a like-for-like proxy for renting a small VPS to run FFmpeg. When comparing self-managed VPS operation with managed cloud playout, compare total cost, restart responsibility, looping and scheduling, stream-health visibility, logs and recovery controls, support, and regional availability.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not show an incoming feed: Check that live streaming is enabled, the stream key is current, and the destination uses the server URL and key in the required format. Keep the key private; if exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the service configuration.
- FFmpeg exits immediately: Check the file path, file permissions, FFmpeg build and codec support, and the service logs. Run the command manually first to see errors directly.
- The VPS cannot keep up: Check CPU use, dropped frames, and YouTube stream health. Encoding can exceed a small VPS’s capacity; test the intended resolution and codec under load rather than assuming the instance size is sufficient.
- Video or audio is unstable: Confirm that the source has the expected streams and that the output codec, CBR target, keyframe interval, and audio format fit YouTube’s guidance. Test with representative motion and sound.
- The stream stops despite systemd: Inspect
systemctl statusandjournalctl. A process restart cannot fix a server outage, network interruption, unavailable media file, or ingest-side issue; identify which layer failed before restarting repeatedly. - The live broadcast works but no complete archive appears: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, but does not establish an archive guarantee for an endless session. Plan shorter sessions if an automatic archive is important.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stream a mantra video from a VPS without keeping my computer on?
Yes. FFmpeg can send a local file from the VPS directly to YouTube, so the home computer does not run the encoder.
Does systemd guarantee that a YouTube stream stays live 24/7?
No. It can restart an exited FFmpeg process, but cannot prevent or repair VPS, network, media-source, or YouTube ingest failures.
Can I monetize a repetitive mantra livestream if I have permission to use the recording?
Not necessarily. YouTube treats monetization eligibility separately from copyright permission; repetitive or reused material may still be ineligible.
