To keep a YouTube lo-fi hip-hop stream running from a Mac mini, use an encoder such as OBS to send an authorized, continuous audio-and-visual program to YouTube Live, prevent the Mac from sleeping while its display is off, and monitor the stream and connection. That keeps the local setup working during ordinary operation; it does not guarantee recovery from every app, power, or internet failure.
What you need for a 24/7 stream
- A YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream.
- A continuous program made from music and visuals you have permission to stream, including any rights needed for your territories, duration, monetization, and archived video.
- An encoder, such as OBS, to send the program to YouTube Live.
- A Mac mini that stays awake, a stable internet connection, and a plan to notice and address interruptions.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not share or publish it, and reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.

Set up the Mac mini and YouTube stream
1. Check YouTube live-stream access
Before announcing a continuous schedule, check the intended channel in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Eligibility and the setup workflow can change, so use the current Live Control Room prompts. YouTube’s live-streaming tips also recommend preview checks and monitoring audio and video.

2. Confirm music and visual rights
Use tracks and visuals whose owners have granted the permissions your stream needs. Confirm that permission covers continuous live use, relevant territories, monetization if applicable, and any saved or archived video. If you use a music licensing provider, ask whether your YouTube channel must be allowlisted in Content ID.

YouTube scans live feeds for third-party content. Its copyright guidance notes that even licensed content can interrupt a broadcast if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID. A license alone is not proof that the live stream will avoid a Content ID interruption.
3. Prepare an encoder program
Install OBS from the official OBS project site if you choose it as your encoder. Build a scene or playlist that can continue playing without manual changes, and check that both its audio and visuals are present. OBS is free and open source; the documented workflow does not require buying an encoder.

4. Connect OBS to YouTube
Create or select the YouTube stream in Live Control Room, then enter the supplied stream URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder with the replacement.

On the Mac mini, open System Settings > Energy and enable Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off, if that option is available on your Mac and macOS version. Set the display to turn off as you prefer; the encoder needs the Mac itself to remain awake. 6. Test before leaving it unattended
Start with a test or unlisted stream. Start the encoder, check YouTube’s preview, and confirm the picture, sound, and stream health at the resolution and bitrate you intend to use. YouTube recommends starting encoders before an event and monitoring stream quality. Test with the actual scene, network, and settings; there is no universal upload-speed figure established here for every setup.
Keep the stream stable and plan for interruptions
Network and bitrate
A bitrate your connection cannot sustain, or an unstable connection, can cause dropped frames. OBS explains that it may drop frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. If stream health shows trouble, check the connection first, then reduce the encoder bitrate or adjust the output settings and test again. The OBS Help portal describes dropped-frame causes and behavior.

A wired network connection can remove some Wi-Fi variability, but it cannot prevent an ISP outage or other network failure. Judge stability using the stream’s observed health under the intended operating conditions rather than assuming the connection is sufficient.
Power, restart, and monitoring
A local broadcast depends on the Mac, encoder, network equipment, and power remaining available. Decide how someone will notice that the stream has stopped and what they will check before restarting it. Apple documents desktop startup-after-power-failure and UPS options, but those do not guarantee that every OBS, macOS, network, or power failure will restore the broadcast automatically.

A UPS is optional support, not a continuity guarantee. If you consider one, size it for the Mac mini and any network equipment you need to keep running; compare runtime at that load, plug and outlet compatibility, and how shutdown and restart behavior will work with the setup.
