How to Keep a 24/7 Yoga Nidra Stream Within YouTube’s Recommended Audio Levels

YouTube does not publish a creator-side integrated loudness target in LUFS for live streams. Its live encoder guidance specifies audio encoding settings—not how loud your finished mix should sound. For a comfortable overnight yoga nidra stream, balance narration and ambience across the full program, prevent digital clipping, then test and monitor the actual YouTube playback.

What YouTube recommends—and what it does not

YouTube’s live encoder recommendations specify audio formats and encoding parameters. For RTMP/RTMPS, they list AAC or MP3, with 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, and bitrates of 128 kbps for stereo or 384 kbps for 5.1. Those figures concern delivery encoding; they are not loudness targets.

The cited YouTube guidance does not give creators an integrated LUFS target for a live mix. In particular, −14 LUFS should not be described as YouTube’s required or recommended level for a live stream based on this guidance. Integrated loudness summarizes perceived program loudness over time; it is different from a peak reading, which helps reveal brief high-level moments.

Keep peaks below clipping, but mix for comfort

Digital full scale is 0 dBFS. The OBS Project’s Audio Mixer Technical Details says streamed or recorded audio needs to remain below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion. OBS’s mixer is useful for watching peaks, but it does not report the integrated loudness of your whole program. Its documented meter conventions include a −20 dBFS alignment level and a −9 dBFS permitted maximum; these describe OBS’s meter, not YouTube’s specification or a yoga nidra target.

A mix can stay below clipping and still be uncomfortable: narration may disappear beneath ambience, a louder word may startle a listener, or a transition may change level abruptly. For a long restorative stream, listen for consistency across quiet speech, emphatic words, music or soundscapes, pauses, and the point where the program loops. Aim for a steady, intelligible presentation without flattening every natural dynamic.

The Audio Engineering Society’s internet-audio guidance recommends a maximum true peak of −1 dBTP at codec input for lossy-encoded streams. That is broader AES guidance, not a YouTube live-stream rule. If you adopt it, treat it as a conservative true-peak ceiling—not as a loudness target or a platform mandate.

Prepare and check the yoga nidra program

  1. Check the source material. Use consistent source files and sample rates where practical. Inspect the beginning and end of each recording, overlaps, silence, and transitions. Confirm you have permission to use every narration, music track, and ambience recording in the continuous program.
  2. Balance mismatched sections first. Compare ordinary and quiet narration with the background bed and louder passages. Use clip gain or automation to correct individual recordings that are out of balance before applying processing to the whole mix.
  3. Use dynamics processing sparingly. Gentle compression can help if the source has distracting level swings, but aggressive compression can make a calming practice feel tiring. Listen to the result rather than relying on a meter alone.
  4. Measure the right properties. Use a loudness meter that reports integrated loudness and true peak over the intended program or representative sections. A peak meter such as OBS’s mixer can help spot peaks, but it cannot establish the full program’s integrated loudness. Keep output below digital clipping; if using the AES reference, label −1 dBTP as an AES-based safety choice.

Test the complete live audio path

YouTube recommends testing with audio representative of the stream and monitoring audio and video quality. Before relying on an overnight or 24/7 session, make a private or unlisted test where practical and listen to the actual YouTube player output—not just the file in your editing application.

  • Check quiet narration against the ambience, louder words, pauses, and any music or soundscape.
  • Listen across transitions and the loop point for sudden changes, clicks, gaps, or unexpected silence.
  • Check at an ordinary listening level and, if feasible, on more than one playback device. Optional closed-back headphones can help you hear details during a test, but headphones do not measure LUFS or true peak.
  • During operation, monitor the live player and stream health for silence, distortion, unexpected jumps, or a failure in the source or playout chain. YouTube’s general live-stream tips call for continuous monitoring of stream audio and video quality.

Do not rely on YouTube’s Stable volume to fix the mix

YouTube describes Stable volume as a playback feature that balances quiet and loud sections by adjusting volume. It is enabled by default when available, but it is not available for every video. It acts on the viewer’s playback experience; it does not replace balancing and testing your source mix, and you cannot assume every listener will hear identical results.
