Schedule OBS and Windows maintenance separately, then treat a restart as a planned interruption—not a seamless handoff. OBS can check for updates on startup, and Windows may restart to finish its own updates; disabling OBS’s updater does not control Windows Update. Before maintenance, preserve your scenes, profile, and media files. Afterward, verify the stream is actually live.
Why an OBS update can interrupt a 24/7 stream
OBS’s built-in updater and your operating system’s update system are separate. OBS provides a setting to check for updates when it starts, while Windows updates can require a system restart. Preventing or delaying an OBS update check therefore does not prevent Windows from restarting the computer.
Restarting OBS can help restore a stream, but neither OBS’s launch options nor the cited guidance promises a no-gap handoff, uninterrupted viewer playback, or recovery from every failure. Plan for an interruption and confirm the stream after maintenance rather than assuming it recovered.
Plan maintenance instead of letting it happen midstream
Choose a window and communicate it
Arrange OBS and operating-system maintenance during an announced low-viewership window. For a children’s stream, coordinate the timing with whoever manages its schedule and viewer-facing notices. Avoid starting an update or restart during a segment that needs to remain uninterrupted.

Manage OBS and Windows separately
In OBS, the setting is labeled “Automatically check for updates on startup.” You can turn off that startup check if you want to control when OBS checks for updates; this changes OBS’s updater behavior only. OBS also documents the --disable-updater launch parameter for Windows and macOS. See the OBS Launch Parameters documentation for platform and launch-option details.
For Windows, use active hours and restart scheduling to move automatic restarts to a more convenient time. Microsoft says Windows updates cannot be stopped entirely, so these controls manage timing rather than permanently preventing updates. Consult Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ for current options.

Protect the scenes, profile, and media before updating
- Record what should be live. Note the OBS profile, scene collection, intended starting scene, and stream destination. Make sure the person performing maintenance knows which setup to restore.
- Preserve the configuration. Keep a backup of the relevant scene collection and profile before changing OBS or the operating system.
- Check linked files. Confirm that videos, images, audio, and other local media used by scenes still exist at stable paths. OBS portable mode keeps configuration alongside the application, but does not automatically package scene media files.
- Use portable mode only where supported and appropriate. OBS documents portable mode for Windows; it is not supported on macOS or Linux. Read the OBS portable-mode guide before changing how an existing installation stores its configuration.
Keeping configuration with the application can make that configuration easier to move or preserve, but it does not make referenced media portable by itself.
Use OBS automatic stream start only as a recovery aid
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch option, which can start streaming when OBS launches. It may help with a deliberate recovery procedure, but it does not establish that the correct scene, profile, credentials, or destination will be selected, that the service will accept the ingest, or that viewers will see continuous playback.

Use it only after verifying the launch procedure with the intended profile and stream configuration. Keep the operator in the loop: a startup option is not a substitute for checking the live output.
After maintenance, verify the complete stream path
- Confirm that the computer has finished restarting and OBS is open.
- Check that the intended OBS profile and scene collection are loaded and that the correct scene is selected.
- Confirm that OBS is streaming and that the destination service reports an active ingest.
- Check the actual output for both picture and sound; a running OBS window alone does not prove viewers are receiving the intended program.
- If the stream did not resume, investigate the configuration and logs before restarting repeatedly or changing credentials.
The cited OBS and Microsoft documentation does not establish a platform-independent watchdog or failover guarantee for a 24/7 stream.

Troubleshoot an update that leaves OBS offline
- OBS does not open or behaves differently: inspect OBS logs and identify what software or system changes occurred during maintenance. OBS notes that other system software can interfere; antivirus interference is one possibility, not a diagnosis. Check the security software’s whitelist guidance before changing protection settings. See the OBS Help Portal.
- The wrong scene or profile appears: select the intended profile and scene collection, then verify the active scene before going live.
- Media sources are missing: check that each referenced file remains available at the path OBS expects. Portable mode does not copy these assets automatically.
- OBS says it is streaming but the destination is not receiving video: check the service’s ingest status and the configured destination and credentials. Do not assume
--startstreamingguarantees a successful connection. - Windows restarts at an inconvenient time: review active hours and restart scheduling, then choose a better maintenance window. Windows Update cannot be disabled indefinitely through these timing controls.
