On a Windows streaming PC, turn on Do not disturb and review its exceptions before leaving a children’s livestream unattended. In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Notifications. This sends most notifications to Notification Center, but alarms, reminders, and apps you allow can still show banners. For added protection, capture only the content window or game in OBS when practical, then inspect the actual stream output.
Set up Do Not Disturb in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Turn on Do not disturb. You can also open Notification Center from the taskbar and select the bell icon marked with “zZ” for a manual toggle.
- Expand Turn on do not disturb automatically and choose rules that fit the streaming PC’s schedule. Windows lists time-of-day, display duplication, gaming, and full-screen use as possible conditions. A 24/7 stream does not itself ensure Do Not Disturb stays enabled, so verify the active state after restarts, updates, or operator changes.
- Open Set priority notifications. Remove calls, reminders, or apps that should not display banners during the broadcast. If you need to allow an operational alert, consider whether its banner might reveal private information.
- Review notification settings for individual apps. Windows lets you disable an app’s notifications entirely or turn off its banners while keeping entries in Notification Center.
- If you use a Focus session, account for its timer and end time. Microsoft says Do Not Disturb turns on automatically when a Focus session starts, but a timed session should not be assumed to protect an all-day stream indefinitely.
Microsoft’s guidance is that with Do Not Disturb enabled, most notifications go directly to Notification Center; banners can still appear for alarms, reminders, and apps you have chosen. Choose what OBS captures
Windows-level suppression and OBS capture selection solve different parts of the problem. Do Not Disturb applies to notifications across the system, subject to exceptions. OBS source choice limits the screen area included in a scene, when the content and application support it.
- Game Capture: OBS describes this as a high-performance source for hardware-accelerated Windows games.
- Window Capture: Captures a single window. Use it when the show is contained in one application and that app works correctly with this method.
- Display Capture: Captures a display, making it broader than a single intended app. Use it when the program genuinely needs the whole desktop.
OBS also documents Settings > General > Hide OBS windows from screen capture. This hides OBS windows, not notifications from other apps. Moving OBS to a secondary display can keep its controls off a captured main display, but it does not suppress notification banners on that display. OBS explains that Display Capture is not the only way to capture a desktop in its capture troubleshooting guidance (dated November 25, 2023).

After changing notification and capture settings, inspect the actual program output or a private preview. Confirm that ordinary app banners, permitted reminders, and any overlays you rely on behave as expected. Documentation describes the controls, but does not guarantee that every notification provider or overlay will be suppressed across all Windows builds and capture paths. Repeat the check after a settings change, restart, or update.
Windows 10: treat it as a legacy setup
Windows 10 uses older Focus Assist menus rather than the Windows 11 path above. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; after that date, it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for the operating system. For a current always-on production PC, prioritize moving to a supported operating system. Microsoft’s notification and Focus pages cover the relevant settings and support status.
