A portable battery pack can start a car with a discharged 12-volt battery, but the vehicle owner’s manual and the pack manufacturer’s instructions always take priority over a generic sequence. In the general procedure described by AAA, secure the vehicle, connect the positive clamp first, connect the negative clamp to an approved unpainted-metal ground, enable the pack as directed, and attempt to start the engine. After a successful start, remove the negative clamp first and the positive clamp second.
Do not continue if the battery is frozen, damaged, leaking, smoking, or if you cannot identify the vehicle’s approved jump points. A jump-start gets the engine running; it does not prove that the battery or charging system is healthy. Arrange a battery test afterward.

Which instructions control the jump-start?
There is no connection layout that is correct for every car. Battery locations, remote jump posts, grounding points, electrical protections, and pack activation controls vary by vehicle and equipment. Read both manuals before touching a clamp:

Use the manual for your exact vehicle, model year, engine and market. A 2025 Chrysler Pacifica manual, for example, cautions against using a booster source above 12 volts. That is a model-specific limit, not a universal rule for every vehicle.

AAA’s general guidance, published August 13, 2024, is useful when it agrees with the two manuals: positive first, negative to an unpainted metal engine ground, and negative removed first after the engine starts. If a manual gives a different approved point or order, follow that manual.
What to prepare before connecting the pack
Gather the equipment and make the vehicle safe before opening the pack’s clamps.

Do not rely on a universal cranking-current number or capacity recommendation. The available guidance does not establish one threshold that fits every engine, battery condition or jump pack. Verify the particular pack’s stated compatibility instead.
When you must not attempt a jump-start
- Frozen battery: Do not jump-start it. A frozen battery can rupture or explode when current is applied. The 2025 Chrysler Pacifica manual gives this warning explicitly.
- Visible damage or leakage: Stop if the case is cracked, swollen, wet with electrolyte or otherwise damaged. Move away from the battery and arrange qualified service.
- Smoke, unusual heat or a strong chemical smell: Do not connect or keep testing. Turn off equipment only if it is safe to do so and obtain assistance.
- Unknown connection points: If polarity marks are missing or you cannot identify the approved ground, do not guess. A vehicle with a battery in the trunk, under a seat or behind covers may provide remote posts in the engine compartment.
- Uncertain vehicle type: The supplied guidance does not establish a universal procedure for every hybrid or electric vehicle. Use that vehicle’s manual and qualified assistance if the instructions are unclear.
Keep the clamps from touching each other and from contacting unintended metal. Correct polarity and a stable ground are essential; AAA describes battery shock and explosion hazards associated with incorrect or careless connections.
How to jump-start the car, step by step
1. Secure the scene and switch off the car
Move the vehicle to a safe position away from traffic if possible. Select the transmission position specified by the manual, set the parking brake and switch off the ignition, lights, climate controls, audio system and other accessories. Open the hood and provide enough light to read the positive and negative markings.

If the vehicle is in an unsafe location, visibility is poor, or traffic cannot be controlled, call roadside assistance rather than working beside the road.
2. Confirm voltage and locate the approved posts
Check the vehicle manual and the pack label before connecting anything. Confirm the vehicle’s electrical-system voltage and that the pack is intended for it. Locate the marked positive jump point, normally identified by a plus sign or red cover, and the approved negative ground or negative jump post. Do not assume the nearest exposed terminal is correct.

Remove covers only as the manual directs, and replace them afterward.
3. Inspect the battery and pack
Look for freezing, cracks, swelling, leaks, corrosion severe enough to obscure the markings, loose hardware or other damage. Check that the pack is charged and that its cables and clamps are intact. Stop if the battery condition is unsafe or cannot be determined.
4. Connect the positive clamp
With the pack not yet activated unless its instructions require otherwise, attach the red or positive clamp to the vehicle’s designated positive jump point. Make sure the clamp’s jaws grip clean metal and cannot slip. Do not let the clamp touch the negative clamp or an unintended grounded part of the vehicle.

5. Connect the negative clamp to the specified ground
Attach the black or negative clamp only where the manuals permit. AAA’s general procedure uses a substantial, unpainted metal part of the engine as ground. A vehicle manual may instead specify a remote negative post or another grounding location. Do not substitute a painted panel, a random bracket or an unapproved sensor connection.

6. Enable the pack exactly as instructed
Turn on the pack, press its activation control or select its automatic mode only as the pack manual describes. Many units provide a ready indication, but the indicator behavior and any protection-reset procedure depend on the model. Do not invent a waiting period or a universal number of start attempts; use the equipment’s stated limits.
If the pack reports reverse polarity, a connection fault or another alarm, stop and correct the connection only after following the manufacturer’s shutdown and reconnection instructions.
7. Attempt to start the engine
From the driver’s seat, try the ignition as the vehicle manual directs. Keep the attempt controlled rather than repeatedly cycling the starter. If the engine starts, leave the clamps in place only for the interval specified by the pack or vehicle instructions, if any; there is no universal time that applies to every combination.

If the engine does not start, release the ignition and stop before making another attempt. Check the pack’s indicators, clamp placement, terminal polarity and ground point against both manuals. A pack that is discharged, incompatible or protecting itself from a fault may not deliver power. Do not continue if cables heat, sparks appear, smoke develops or the battery condition changes.
8. Switch off and disconnect in the correct order
Once the engine is running, follow the pack instructions for disabling or switching it off. Remove the negative clamp first, then remove the positive clamp. Keep each clamp from touching the vehicle, the other clamp or nearby metal while it is being removed. Secure the pack and reinstall any terminal covers.
If the car still will not start
A failed attempt does not identify one specific fault. Work through these checks without guessing:
- Recheck the manual: Confirm that you used the designated positive post and approved ground for this vehicle, not merely the most visible battery connection.
- Read the pack indicators: A low-charge, reverse-polarity or fault warning may require the pack to be turned off before a connection is changed. Follow its manual.
- Inspect the clamps: Verify that both jaws are firmly seated on clean, permitted metal and that neither cable is loose or damaged.
- Confirm compatibility: Recheck system voltage and the pack’s stated vehicle or engine coverage. The available guidance does not provide a universal current or capacity figure that can override the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Stop if the battery is unsafe: Freezing, swelling, leakage, smoke or excessive heat is a reason to discontinue the attempt, not to apply more power.
If the pack is correctly connected and enabled but the starter still will not operate, the problem may involve the battery, starter, cables, fuses, immobilizer or another vehicle system. Arrange qualified roadside assistance or service instead of repeatedly trying the pack.
What to do after the engine starts
A running engine only confirms that the vehicle started with assistance. AAA recommends having the battery tested afterward. Testing can identify a battery that no longer holds a charge and can help distinguish a battery problem from a charging-system or starting-system fault.

Use the vehicle and pack instructions, and obtain service advice if the car stalls again, warning lights remain on or the next restart is uncertain. How to choose a compatible portable battery pack
Choose by verifiable compatibility rather than by an unexplained “most powerful” label. The relevant checks are:

A pack marketed for a 12-volt car is not automatically suitable for every vehicle that has a 12-volt battery. Confirm the vehicle-specific jump points and the pack’s instructions each time, especially after changing vehicles.
Special vehicle layouts and uncertain cases
Battery is not beside the engine
Many cars place the main battery under a trunk floor, seat or protective enclosure. They may provide remote positive and negative posts in the engine compartment. Use those posts if the manual specifies them; do not route clamps to an exposed terminal simply because it is easier to reach.
Hybrid and electric vehicles
The available guidance does not establish one procedure for every hybrid or electric vehicle. Their high-voltage systems and manufacturer-specific service points make the owner’s manual especially important. If the manual does not clearly authorize the pack and identify the low-voltage jump points, call qualified assistance.
Vehicle-specific voltage restrictions
The 2025 Chrysler Pacifica owner’s manual is a useful reminder that a vehicle can state a specific booster-source limit. Treat that warning as applicable to that model and year only. For another vehicle, find the corresponding specification instead of assuming that the same limit or connection arrangement applies.
When to call roadside assistance
Stop and arrange professional help when you cannot identify polarity or ground, the battery may be frozen or damaged, the pack gives a persistent fault indication, the engine will not start after a correct attempt, or the vehicle is in a dangerous location. AAA also identifies mobile battery service as an option when a portable pack or cables do not solve the problem. Provider coverage and response options depend on your location and membership or service arrangement, so confirm those details directly.
