On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program, select Get Started, link the account registered with the Windows Insider Program, choose a channel, accept the device agreements, and restart. Windows 10 uses Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program instead. The channel determines how early your builds arrive, how much instability you should expect, and how difficult it may be to leave.
What joining the Windows Insider Program does
The Windows Insider Program delivers preview versions of Windows before, or alongside, their broad production release. You enroll a specific PC through Settings; after the required restart, Windows Update can offer Insider builds according to the channel and Windows core version available to that device.

Insider software is not equivalent to the normal production release. Microsoft warns that preview builds are less stable, are not serviced like production builds, and eventually expire. A PC used for banking, critical work, point-of-sale duties, or other tasks that cannot tolerate failed updates should remain on the production channel. A spare computer or a complete, tested backup is a safer choice for experimentation.

Check your situation before enrolling
Decide whether this PC can tolerate preview software
- Use a noncritical device when possible. Preview builds can introduce bugs, compatibility problems, or changes that affect drivers and applications.
- Confirm that you can recover files and reinstall or restore Windows if a build causes a serious problem.
- Make a current backup of documents, photos, project files, browser data, and any other information you cannot replace. Microsoft specifically instructs users to back up information they want to keep before restoring a PC.
- Expect that a build may expire. An Insider installation is not a permanent alternative to the production release.
Have the correct account ready
The account you link in Settings must be the account registered with the Windows Insider Program. If the PC uses another Microsoft account, the enrollment screen provides a different-account option so you can enter the appropriate credentials. Linking the wrong account can prevent enrollment or make the expected channel unavailable.
Know what the Settings screen may show
Microsoft is transitioning the channel system during 2026. The April 10, 2026 announcement describes Experimental and Beta as the two primary channels, with advanced options for selecting a Windows core version. It also describes a staged rollout of in-place upgrades between channels. Your device may therefore show fewer choices, different labels, or a different upgrade path while the transition is rolling out. Treat the controls displayed in your own Settings app as authoritative for that PC.
Choose a channel before you click Continue
Channel selection is the most consequential decision in enrollment. It controls the maturity of the code you receive, how close a build is to a retail release, and the recovery work required if you later change direction.

| Channel or option | What Microsoft describes | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Experimental | Early access to features in active development. | Insiders who want to try unfinished work and provide feedback early. | Features can change, be delayed, or never ship. Expect the greatest uncertainty among the primary channels. |
| Beta | A preview of what Microsoft plans to ship in the coming weeks. | Most people who want preview features with a comparatively more stable experience closer to shipping. | It is still preview software, and feature availability can be gradual rather than immediate for every device. |
| Release Preview | Early access to production builds shortly before broad release. | Commercial customers and Insiders who need a near-release validation window. | It is an advanced option and must be enabled through Advanced Options when that control is available. |
| Experimental Future Platforms | The earliest preview path, not aligned to a retail Windows release. | Experienced testers interested in work beyond the normal retail release cadence. | Microsoft says moving from Future Platforms to another channel or leaving requires a clean install. |
Experimental: maximum early access
Experimental is intended for active development rather than a nearly finished feature set. A capability shown in an announcement may be altered, postponed, or removed. Choose it only if discovering and reporting unfinished behavior is more important to you than predictable day-to-day operation.
Beta: the practical default for many testers
Microsoft describes Beta as the better fit for a more stable experience with features closer to shipping. That does not make Beta risk-free: it remains a preview channel, and a feature can be enabled gradually, changed after feedback, or withheld from a particular device. It is the sensible starting point when you want to test upcoming Windows behavior without selecting the earliest development code.
Release Preview: near-production validation
Release Preview is aimed at testing a production build shortly before general availability. It is not necessarily visible as a first-level choice during enrollment. When Microsoft exposes it, open the channel’s Advanced Options and enable it there. This option is usually more appropriate for organizations validating applications, policies, and hardware than for someone seeking experimental features months ahead.
Future Platforms: a separate recovery commitment
Experimental Future Platforms is not tied to a retail Windows release such as 25H2 or 26H1. Because it is outside the normal release alignment, Microsoft says that leaving it or moving to a channel receiving lower build numbers requires a clean install. Do not select it on a machine unless you have installation media, a verified backup, and the time to rebuild the PC.

The April 2026 announcement lists 25H2 and 26H1 as the Windows core-version choices most users are expected to see. The core version matters when you change channels: Microsoft’s newer in-place-upgrade design is intended, in most cases, to allow movement among Experimental, Beta, and Release Preview on the same core version. A channel change that crosses core versions, or a device that has not received the new servicing path, can still have different requirements.
How to join on Windows 11
- Open Settings from the Start menu or with Windows key + I.
- Select Windows Update, then select Windows Insider Program.
- Select Get Started. If Windows asks you to connect an account, continue to the account step.
- Select Link an account. Choose the account already registered with the Windows Insider Program, or select the option to use a different account and enter its credentials.
- When the channel list appears, select Experimental, Beta, or another option offered for your device. If you need Release Preview and it is not listed, plan to check Advanced Options after enrollment.
- Continue through the enrollment screens and read the device agreements. Select the control confirming that you accept them.
- Choose Restart now to begin the transition immediately, or choose to restart later. Windows cannot begin receiving the selected Insider build until the required restart has completed.
After the restart, return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. The first Insider build may not appear instantly; Windows Update must evaluate the device, account, channel, and currently offered build.
How to join on Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security, then select Windows Insider Program.
- Select Get Started.
- Select Link an account and sign in with the account registered with the Windows Insider Program, or use the different-account option.
- Select the channel available for the device, continue, and review the device agreements.
- Accept the agreements and restart now or later.
The labels differ from Windows 11 because Windows 10 places the Insider controls under Update & Security rather than Windows Update. The enrollment sequence itself remains account linking, channel selection, agreement acceptance, and restart.
What happens after the restart
Confirm the enrollment state
Open the same Windows Insider Program page again. It should show the account and channel associated with the PC. Then use Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates on Windows 10.

Do not assume every announced feature is immediately present
Microsoft can roll out features gradually. A feature mentioned in a Windows Insider announcement may be enabled for only part of the channel, may require a compatible configuration, or may arrive in a later build. The absence of one announced feature does not by itself prove that enrollment failed.
Keep recovery information available
Record the Windows edition, core version, current build number, and channel shown in Settings. Keep your backup current as builds change. This information helps you determine whether a later channel switch is supported and gives you a reference point if you need to restore the PC.
Changing channels in 2026
Channel changes are governed by more than the name shown in the menu. The relevant variables include your current channel, the Windows core version, the build currently installed, and whether Microsoft’s new in-place-upgrade path has reached your device.
The newer in-place path
Microsoft’s April 10, 2026 announcement says it is introducing in-place upgrades so that, in most cases, a user can move among Experimental, Beta, and Release Preview on the same Windows core version or leave the program without a clean install. The rollout begins in stages, and the available sources do not establish that every device has received it. If your Settings page offers a compatible switch, follow that interface and read its warning before confirming.
When a clean install may still be required
Microsoft specifically says that moving from Experimental Future Platforms to another channel or leaving it requires a clean install. Older or channel-specific guidance can also impose stricter rules. For example, Microsoft’s March 6, 2026 Canary guidance says that leaving Canary or moving to a channel receiving lower build numbers requires a clean install. That rule is tied to the Canary build context; it should not be generalized to every channel under the newer transition plan.
Safe procedure before switching
- Back up files and verify that you can open the backup from another device or recovery environment.
- Open the Windows Insider Program page and note the current channel, core version, and build.
- Inspect the available channel and Advanced Options controls. Do not rely on a channel list described for another build.
- Read the warning for the destination channel. If it says a clean install is required, prepare installation media and a complete restore plan before proceeding.
- Apply the change only after deciding whether the PC can be unavailable during downloading, installation, and recovery.
How to leave the program or return to production
Opting out on a production build
Microsoft Support says users can opt out when the PC is on a production build. Use the Windows Insider Program settings page and follow the available option to stop receiving preview builds. The exact control can vary during the 2026 transition, so read the description shown by your device before confirming.
Restoring the original operating system
If the PC is on an Insider build and you need to return to its original operating system, Microsoft provides restoration guidance rather than promising a simple toggle for every build. Back up everything you want to keep before starting. Restoration can remove applications, settings, and files that are not included in the backup.
Why leaving can be more complicated than joining
Preview builds can advance beyond the production build currently offered to ordinary PCs. Windows cannot always downgrade safely by retaining the newer system files. That is why the required action may be an in-place transition on the same core version, a rollback available for a limited period, or a clean installation. The channel, build, core version, and rollout state determine which case applies.

“Get Started” is missing
- Verify that you are on the Windows Insider Program page, not only the general Windows Update page.
- On Windows 11 use Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program; on Windows 10 use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program.
- Install any pending production updates, restart, and check the page again.
- If the device still shows no enrollment control, the account, device state, or currently supported build may not satisfy the conditions Microsoft is exposing. The available sources do not provide a complete list of all eligibility rules, so use the message displayed in Settings rather than assuming a particular missing requirement.
The wrong account is displayed
Select Link an account, then choose the different-account option and sign in with the account registered with the Insider Program. If the account was never registered, complete that registration before attempting to enroll the PC.
The preferred channel is not listed
Channel availability depends on the device’s build and Microsoft’s transition rollout. Check Advanced Options, especially if you are looking for Release Preview or a core-version selector. Do not force a channel change through unsupported workarounds; a destination that is absent from Settings may require a clean install or may not be offered to that build.
No preview build appears after restarting
- Return to the Insider Program page and confirm that the account and channel were saved.
- Run Windows Update again and allow time for the service to evaluate the enrollment.
- Check whether the selected channel is receiving a build for your Windows core version.
- Remember that feature and build rollouts can be staged. A delay does not necessarily mean the enrollment failed.
The PC becomes unstable
Save diagnostic information while the system is usable, restore important files from your backup if necessary, and use Microsoft’s recovery or restoration path for the specific build. Do not continue installing successive preview builds on a machine that is already failing critical tasks. A clean installation may be required for certain channel transitions, including the Future Platforms and channel-specific Canary cases described above.
Quick Recap
A decision checklist
- Choose Experimental if you accept unfinished features and want to test active development work early.
- Choose Beta if you want the closest balance of preview access and stability described by Microsoft.
- Choose Release Preview if your priority is validating a near-production build and the Advanced Options control is available.
- Choose Future Platforms only if you understand that it is not aligned to a retail release and that leaving can require a clean install.
- Stay on production Windows if downtime, incompatible software, or data loss would be unacceptable.
Key points to remember
- Windows 11 starts enrollment at Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Get Started; Windows 10 substitutes Update & Security for Windows Update.
- You link the registered Insider account, select a channel, accept device agreements, and restart.
- Experimental is early active-development code; Beta is a more stable preview closer to shipping; Release Preview is an advanced near-production option.
- Insider builds are less stable than production software, are not serviced like production releases, and eventually expire.
- Back up files before enrolling if you cannot afford to lose them, and again before any restoration or clean installation.
- Channel-switch and exit requirements vary by channel, core version, build, and the staged rollout of Microsoft’s in-place upgrade system.
