To join the On the Rocks co-op demo, open its official Steam store page, choose Download On the Rocks Demo, install and launch it, create a multiplayer lobby, and invite your friends through Steam. Everyone joins the lobby, completes the ready check, and then enters the shared world. The demo is free and available for PC through Steam.
Use the person whose save the group wants to keep as the host: co-op progression is managed by the host’s world. The preview currently offers a guided story segment and an endless sandbox, but it is unfinished software, so some multiplayer behavior and other features may still be rough.

- A host chosen in advance, because the host’s save controls the co-op world and its progression.
The announcement describes the demo as “LIVE and FREE on Steam right now.” You do not need to buy the unreleased full game to try this preview.

How to download and launch the demo
- Open the official store page. Go to https://store.steampowered.com/app/4149640/On_the_Rocks/ while signed in to Steam.
- Select the demo download. On the store page, choose Download On the Rocks Demo. Steam should add the demo to your library and begin the installation process.
- Finish the installation. Wait until Steam reports that the demo is ready to play. If Steam offers both the full product listing and the demo, select the demo entry rather than wish-listing or purchasing the unreleased game.
- Launch the demo. Start it from your Steam library. Have every participant launch the same demo before the host creates a lobby; this avoids sending an invitation to someone who is still on the store page or in another application.
The demo is separate from the planned full release. Steam currently lists the full game for Q4 2026, so a demo installation should not be treated as access to the finished product.
How to create a co-op lobby
- From the demo’s main menu, choose the co-op or multiplayer option.
- Select the command to create a lobby or host a session.
- Wait for the lobby screen to appear before sending invitations. The lobby is where the host’s world is selected and where participants can see the ready state.
- Use Steam’s invitation flow to select friends. Depending on the Steam overlay and the current demo build, the invitation control may appear as an invite button, a friend-list action, or an overlay option.
- Ask each invited player to accept the Steam invitation and join the lobby. The official co-op announcement describes lobby invitations and ready checks for a group of up to four players.
- When everyone who is playing is present, have each person use the lobby’s ready control. Start the session only after all required players show as ready.
- Enter the shared world from the host’s lobby. The host’s save is the one that determines the group’s continuing progress.
Who should host
Choose the player who can reliably be available for future sessions and whose progression the group wants to preserve. Co-op world saves and progression are managed by the host, so joining a friend’s lobby does not make that friend’s world part of your own save. If a different person hosts another session, that session uses the other host’s world instead.
How many people can join
The co-op preview supports up to four players, including the host, according to the official announcements from 312 Interactive and LootBAG Studios. A fifth person cannot be added to the same co-op lobby. If your group is larger, divide it into separate sessions and decide which host’s world each group will use.

Steam invitations work only after the host has reached the demo’s lobby screen. If a friend cannot join, check the sequence rather than repeatedly sending the same invite.

- Confirm that the host launched the demo, selected multiplayer, and actually created a lobby.
- Confirm that the friend is signed in to the Steam account that is on the host’s friend list.
- Ask the friend to launch the demo first, then send a new invitation from the active lobby.
- Have the friend accept through Steam’s notification or overlay and wait for the player name to appear in the lobby.
- If the player appears but cannot start, make sure every participant has completed the lobby’s ready check.
- If the invitation still fails, close and relaunch the demo on both sides, create a new lobby, and repeat the invitation flow. The co-op feature is a preview, so an occasional failed invite may be a build issue rather than a mistake in the steps.
Do not assume that being on the game’s store page means a person has installed the demo. The invited player must download and launch the demo itself before joining the host’s session.
How the host save affects a group
The host-save model is the most important planning detail for a regular group. The host’s world contains the co-op session’s progression, so the group should agree on one primary host before beginning the story.
- For a continuing campaign: use the same host whenever possible and have that person start each session.
- For a one-off test: any participant can host, but progress made there belongs to that host’s world.
- For rotating schedules: expect each host to have a separate world rather than one shared save that automatically follows every player.
- For a player joining late: send that person a Steam invitation from the host’s active lobby; joining another friend’s lobby does not transfer ownership of the host’s save.
The available announcement does not describe a save-transfer, cross-host merge, or host migration feature. Plan around the documented host-controlled system instead of assuming that another player can take over the world.
What is included in the co-op preview
The Steam Community announcement describes the demo as approximately 40 minutes of story content plus an endless sandbox. The story portion provides a guided introduction, while the sandbox is intended for continued experimentation after the structured segment ends.

Preview limitations to expect
The co-op release is explicitly presented as a Preview. That label matters: the build may contain bugs, unfinished interfaces, or multiplayer behavior that changes before launch.
Single-player activities can remain single-player
Random city duels are currently described as single-player. If one player reaches such an activity, the rest of the group should not interpret its solo behavior as a failed invitation or a broken lobby. It is a current design limitation of that activity in the preview.
Some multiplayer indicators are not yet validated
The announcement notes that hostile minimap indicators still need multiplayer validation. Treat the minimap as potentially incomplete during co-op. If an enemy marker is missing or appears unreliable, use the game world and your group’s communication rather than assuming the indicator is authoritative.

A preview can behave differently from the eventual release. Keep the demo updated through Steam, record which player was hosting when a problem occurred, and recreate the lobby after a failed session. Those details make it easier to distinguish a temporary launch problem from the host-save behavior or a known preview limitation.

Solo play versus co-op
Choosing between solo and multiplayer depends on whether your priority is uninterrupted progress or a shared session with friends. The current information supports the following practical distinction:

Troubleshooting by symptom
The demo download button is missing
Return to the official listing at https://store.steampowered.com/app/4149640/On_the_Rocks/, sign in to Steam, and look specifically for Download On the Rocks Demo. The demo is a PC Steam product, not a console download. If the page has changed, check that you are viewing the current listing rather than an old library shortcut.
A friend accepted the invite but is not in the lobby
Ask the friend to verify that the demo—not just Steam or the store page—is running. The host should remain on the active multiplayer lobby, then send a fresh invitation. Once the player name appears, wait for the ready state before starting.

The group cannot start the session
Check the ready indicators. The documented flow expects participants to ready up before entering the shared world. Also verify that the lobby has not reached its four-player limit and that no one is still joining through an expired invitation.
Progress is missing in a later session
Identify which account hosted the earlier session. Because progression is managed by the host, starting a new lobby under another account loads that account’s world rather than the original host’s progress. Rejoin the original host when you want to continue that world.
An activity does not allow the whole group to participate
Check whether it is a random city duel. Those duels are currently single-player, so the behavior is expected in the preview. Other rough edges may be related to the feature’s Preview status.
The minimap does not show a hostile player or threat
Hostile minimap indicators have not yet been validated for multiplayer. Treat missing or inconsistent markers as a limitation of the current build, communicate with teammates, and avoid relying on the minimap alone.
Demo timing and the planned full release
The demo is available now as a free Steam preview, while the store listing places the full game’s release window in Q4 2026. These are separate products: installing the demo does not grant access to the finished release, and preview behavior should not be read as a final feature list.
A publisher announcement dated October 13, 2026, connected the co-op preview with Steam Next Fest, scheduled for October 19–26, 2026. Event dates can change, so use the current Steam listing and the publisher’s latest announcement for availability rather than relying on an old calendar reference. The co-op instructions themselves do not depend on attending the event.
