Choose the joining method that matches the server
There is no single address or port that works for every Unturned server. The right path depends on whether the server is public, whether the host gave you a Server Code or an IP address, whether you are on the same home network, and whether a password is required.

If you do not know which row applies, ask the host for one of three things: the exact server name, a Server Code, or the complete address-and-port pair. Do not guess the port from another server.
Join a public server from the browser
Open the server list
- Start Unturned and select Play from the main menu.
- Open Servers to display the public-server browser.
- Search for the community or server name, or sort the list to narrow the choices.
The browser shows useful checks before you join, including the displayed map, game mode, current player count, ping and whether the server is password-protected. A low player count does not necessarily mean the server is offline; it may simply be quiet at that moment.

Use sorting and exact searches
Sorting by player count can help you find an active server, while an exact-name search is more reliable when a host has given you a specific community name. If the server was recently moved or its port changed, the browser and favorites list may not update immediately. Refresh the list and search again rather than assuming the server has disappeared.
Check the entry before joining
- Confirm that the map and mode match what you intended to play.
- Check the ping if connection responsiveness matters to you.
- Look for the password indicator; a locked entry requires credentials from the host or administrators.
- Compare the displayed name carefully with similarly named servers to avoid joining an impersonator or unrelated community.
Select the server and choose the join option. If it fails, note the exact server name and the time you tried; those details help the host determine whether the server is running and visible to other players.

Enter the host’s connection details
- From the main menu, choose Play.
- Open Connect.
- Replace the default value in the IP or address field with the IP address or hostname supplied by the host.
- Enter the port supplied by the host.
- Enter a password only if the host says the server requires one.
- Submit the connection and wait for Unturned to complete the handshake.
An address can be a numeric IP (for example, an address in a private home-network range) or a domain-style hostname. Copy it exactly, including punctuation. Do not add a protocol prefix such as http://, and do not substitute your own public IP for the address the host provided.
Which port should you enter?
Use the server’s configured port, not a universal Unturned value. A joining guide may show 25444 as an example default, but that number is only an example unless the host confirms that their server still uses it. Current official command documentation describes a configured port and a second consecutive port, so the host’s actual settings determine what a remote player must use.
When a host gives you an address in the form example.net:25444, the part after the colon is the port. If the host provides the address and port separately, enter each in its matching field. If no port was supplied, ask before trying to connect; guessing can send you to the wrong service or produce an unhelpful timeout.

Passwords and failed attempts
Passwords are case-sensitive in practice, so paste the value carefully and remove accidental spaces at the beginning or end. If the host recently changed the password, discard any saved or previously shared value and request the current one. Repeatedly submitting an old password will not repair an address or port problem.
Join with a Server Code
Where to enter the code
- Open Unturned and choose Play.
- Open Connect.
- Select Connect Directly.
- Enter the Server Code supplied by the host.
- Provide the password if the server also uses one, then connect.
Official hosting documentation states that players, including the server owner, can join by entering the server’s Server Code in the Connect Directly menu. This is often the simplest route for a private or dedicated server because you do not have to type a public IP address or manually determine which router ports are exposed.
Copying and validating a code
Server Codes are not the same thing as an IP address. Paste the code into the code field rather than the IP field, and preserve every character. Ask the host to resend it if you are unsure whether a character is a zero, the letter O, or another easily confused symbol. A code that worked previously may no longer be valid if the host recreated or reconfigured the server, so confirm its current status.
Connect to a localhost or LAN server
Same computer: localhost
If the server is running on the same computer as your game, the host can use a local connection such as localhost. Enter it through Play > Connect and use the server’s configured port. This traffic does not need to travel across the public internet.
Another computer on the same home network
For a friend connected to the same router, the host should provide the server computer’s local network address rather than its public internet address. Local addresses commonly belong to private address ranges, but the exact value depends on the router. The joining player must be on the same network, and the server application must be listening on that local interface.

If a local connection fails, verify that both devices are actually using the same network. A guest Wi-Fi network may isolate devices from one another, and a computer connected through a different network or mobile hotspot is not on the same LAN even if the homes are nearby.
Players outside the home network
A local address is not reachable from the wider internet. Players outside the host’s network need an internet-access method such as a Server Code, Fake IP or correctly configured port forwarding. Giving a remote player a private LAN address will normally result in a timeout, even when the server works perfectly for someone in the same house.
What hosting setup affects your connection
Two consecutive ports
Official port-forwarding documentation says that each Unturned server uses two consecutive ports while running. That matters primarily to the host, but it explains why forwarding or firewall rules that cover only one port can still prevent outside players from joining. The configured starting port and the next consecutive port must be handled according to the host’s setup and the server documentation.
Port forwarding
With direct IP joining, a home-hosted server may require the host to forward the configured port range from the router to the computer running Unturned. The host also needs local firewall rules that permit the server process. Port-forwarding labels differ by router, so the host should use the router’s documentation and confirm that the rule points to the correct internal address.

Forwarding is not required for every arrangement. Server Code and Fake IP are documented alternatives to manually exposing ports. If the host does not want to manage router settings, ask whether one of those methods is available instead.

Public address changes
A home internet connection can receive a different public address after a router restart or provider change. If a direct IP connection worked yesterday but now times out, ask the host to confirm the current address and port before changing settings on your own computer. A Server Code can avoid this particular exchange when the host’s service supports it.

1. Confirm that the server is running
Ask the host to verify that the server process is started and that it has finished loading its map and configuration. A server that is still booting may not accept connections yet. If it is a public server, refresh the browser and check whether its player count or listing returns.

2. Recheck the exact details
- Compare every character of the IP address or hostname.
- Confirm the port with the host; do not rely on the example value 25444 unless the host explicitly uses it.
- Verify capitalization, spaces and punctuation in the Server Code.
- Request the current password if the server is protected.
3. Refresh a browser listing
Search by the exact server name and refresh the server list. Favorites can take time to update after a host changes its address or port, so remove an obsolete favorite or search for the current listing instead of repeatedly selecting the stale entry.
4. Determine whether the problem is local or internet-facing
If a player on the host’s LAN can join but an outside player cannot, the likely boundary is the internet-access method: port forwarding, firewall configuration, public-address changes, Server Code or Fake IP. If nobody can join, investigate whether the server is running, whether its content is loading, and whether the address and port are correct.
5. Check game and workshop compatibility
You and the server must use compatible game and content versions. Unturned servers can also depend on workshop items or other installed content. The available official guidance does not establish one universal error message for every version mismatch, so ask the host which game version and workshop content the server expects. Update or install the required content before trying again.
6. Separate a password error from a network timeout
An incorrect password usually occurs after the server can be reached, whereas a timeout commonly points to an address, port, firewall or routing issue. Ask the host what they observe in the server console or administration panel; that evidence is more useful than repeatedly changing client settings at random.

Send your friend a concise request so neither of you has to guess:
- Join method: Server Code, IP/hostname, or browser listing.
- Address: the exact hostname or IP if direct connection is used.
- Port: the configured port, not a presumed default.
- Password: only when the server is protected.
- Network scope: same LAN only or reachable from the internet.
- Compatibility: required game version, map and workshop content.
For an internet-facing home server, also ask whether the host has chosen Server Code, Fake IP or port forwarding. That answer tells you whether a direct private address can work or whether you need a different connection method.
Safety and privacy when joining
- Use the address and credentials supplied through a trusted channel; do not post a private password publicly.
- Do not download unrelated executables or provide account credentials to a server operator merely to join.
- Expect a community server to have its own rules, moderation and workshop requirements; read its instructions before installing optional content.
- If a server asks for information unrelated to joining, stop and verify the request with the owner.
A Server Code simplifies discovery, but it does not by itself tell you whether a community is trustworthy. Treat the code as a connection identifier, not as a security guarantee.
Quick decision checklist
- Is the server visible and public? Use Play > Servers, search its exact name and inspect map, mode, players, ping and password status.
- Did the host send a Server Code? Use Play > Connect > Connect Directly and paste it exactly.
- Did the host send an IP or hostname? Use Play > Connect, enter that address and the host’s configured port, then add the password only if required.
- Are you on the same computer or LAN? Use the local address supplied by the host;
localhostis appropriate for the same computer. - Are you outside the host’s network? A local address will not work. Use Server Code, Fake IP or a direct public address with the host’s two-port and firewall configuration working.
- Still blocked? Reconfirm that the server is running, refresh stale browser data, verify the password and check game/workshop compatibility.
What to remember
Public servers are normally easiest through the in-game browser. Direct Connect is for a host-supplied address, port and optional password; 25444 is only an example unless that server uses it. Server Code is the convenient current path for many private and dedicated servers, while localhost and LAN addresses are limited to the local network. Players outside a home network need an internet-reachable method, and hosts using port-based access must account for Unturned’s two consecutive server ports.
