A person without a WhatsApp account can now join a WhatsApp audio or video call from a computer browser by using a call link created by the host. You type a display name, enter a waiting room, and stay there until the host admits you. You do not need to install WhatsApp or register an account for this guest flow.
The feature was announced on October 14, 2026. Availability can still vary while the newer guest-calling rollout reaches accounts and regions, so an older link or an account-only prompt does not necessarily behave the same way.

What you need before joining
The guest process has deliberately few requirements, but the host and guest have different responsibilities.

The documented guest entry is through a computer web browser. The announcement does not promise that opening the link in a phone browser produces the same guest experience, so use a computer if you do not have an account.

How to join step by step
1. Have the host create a guest-capable call link
The host opens WhatsApp, goes to the Calls tab, selects the + icon, and chooses the option to create a call link. Only someone with a WhatsApp account can perform this step.
The host can send the resulting URL through email, text message, a calendar invitation, or any other channel. Treat the URL as an invitation: anyone who obtains it may be able to request entry, subject to the host’s approval controls.
2. Open the link on a computer
Use a current computer web browser and open the complete URL exactly as received. The guest flow is designed to start in the browser; no WhatsApp download or sign-up screen should be necessary when the rollout is available for that link.
3. Enter a name
When prompted, type the name you want the host and other participants to see. This is a call display name, not a WhatsApp profile and not an account registration.

4. Wait for admission
After submitting your name, you enter a waiting room. Seeing a waiting message is normal. Possessing the URL does not automatically put you into the conversation: the host has to approve you.
5. Join after the host approves you
Once admitted, grant the browser any microphone or camera permission you want to use. The available in-call controls include microphone and camera toggles, screen sharing, reactions such as a thumbs-up or heart, and a raise-hand control.
What guests can and cannot do
Guest access is intended for participation in the call, not for managing a WhatsApp conversation.

- You can participate in audio or video. The guest call can be one-to-one or part of a group call.
- You can share your computer screen. Check the browser’s sharing prompt carefully before selecting a window or the entire screen.
- You can react and raise your hand. The documented reactions include thumbs-up and heart emojis.
- You cannot see other participants’ phone numbers. Guest privacy is separate from the address book information associated with WhatsApp accounts.
- You cannot send messages in the call. Joining as a guest does not create a WhatsApp chat identity.
- You cannot add people directly. Ask the host to invite another person with the call link instead.
Waiting-room and host controls
Approval is mandatory for guests
Every unauthenticated participant waits for the host’s decision. If the host has not noticed the request, your browser can continue to show the waiting room even though the link is valid. Contact the host through the channel used to send the invitation rather than repeatedly refreshing.

The host can remove a guest
Admission is not permanent. The host controls who remains in the call and can remove a guest at any time. If you are removed, only the host can explain whether you may rejoin.
Sharing the URL has privacy consequences
Send the link only to intended invitees. A call URL is not proof of identity; the host should check the name shown in the waiting room before approving someone. The host’s approval setting helps, but it does not make a publicly posted URL private.

The 32-person figure is the announced maximum for the call, not a promise that every browser, account, or rollout will expose identical controls immediately.
If the link asks you to sign in
An account prompt can occur for several different reasons. Do not assume that entering your phone number is required for the new guest method.

Check that you are using a computer
The documented no-account entry is through a computer browser. Move the URL from a phone to a computer and open it there before troubleshooting the link itself.
Ask the host when the link was created
WhatsApp’s older Help Center guidance described call links as account-based: people with a WhatsApp account could join, the link could have an optional approval requirement, and a link could expire after 30 days of non-use or be revoked. The October 14, 2026 guest announcement adds unauthenticated browser entry, but it does not establish that every historical link has been converted. Ask the host to create a fresh link from the current Calls tab if an older URL demands an account.
Allow the rollout for the host’s account
Feature availability may differ by region or account while the guest-calling rollout is introduced. If a newly created link still offers only account-based joining, the host may need to wait until the feature appears for that account rather than attempting to register a guest account.

A truncated or altered URL can open a generic WhatsApp page instead of the call lobby. Have the host resend the original link without line breaks or extra punctuation.

- Verify that you entered the name and submitted the join request.
- Tell the host that your name is visible in the waiting room and ask for approval.
- Check that you opened the same link the host is currently monitoring; multiple links can represent different calls.
- Keep the browser tab open while the host decides. Closing it cancels your pending request.
- If the host cannot see you, leave and reopen the link once, then repeat the name-entry step.
Waiting-room status is not an error by itself. The host’s approval is a required part of guest access.
Audio, camera, and screen-sharing problems
Microphone or camera does not work
When you first join, the browser may ask for permission to use the microphone or camera. Choose the device you intend to use and allow access for the call page. If you denied permission, use the browser’s site-permission controls to enable it, then reload or rejoin as prompted.
Screen sharing is unavailable
Screen sharing is an available guest control, but the browser and operating system still decide which windows or screens can be selected. Close confidential documents, choose only the window you intend to show, and stop sharing before leaving the call.
You cannot find reactions or raise hand
Those controls are available in the guest call experience, but labels and placement can vary with the browser rollout. Look in the in-call controls or the more-actions menu after you have been admitted.
Guest privacy and safe use
- Use a display name that lets the host recognize you without revealing information you do not want shown to the group.
- Do not post the call URL publicly. Anyone who receives it can attempt to enter the waiting room.
- Before sharing your screen, close password managers, private messages, payment pages, and unrelated work.
- Remember that the host can remove you even after approving you.
- Do not expect the call to provide WhatsApp messaging, contact discovery, or the ability to invite additional participants from a guest identity.
WhatsApp describes the calls as end-to-end encrypted. That protects call content in transit, but it does not change who the host chooses to admit or what you intentionally show while sharing your screen.
How this differs from ordinary WhatsApp account setup
WhatsApp’s general calling information says a primary phone is needed to register an account and link new devices. That requirement applies when you are creating or using a WhatsApp account. It does not apply to the newly announced guest path, in which the host supplies a link and the visitor enters from a computer browser without registering.
This distinction also explains why instructions written before October 14, 2026 may tell every caller to install the app or sign in. Those instructions describe the older account-based experience, not necessarily the current guest rollout.
