To join a Subnautica Nitrox server, install and launch Nitrox, open Multiplayer, save the host’s reachable server IP with Add server IP, then connect and choose your in-game name and color. The host must keep the Nitrox server running and make its UDP connection available—normally through port 11000, router forwarding, or a shared VPN network.

Nitrox is a free, open-source multiplayer modification for Subnautica; it is not the base game’s built-in multiplayer mode. The project homepage currently displays version 1.8.1.0, advertises support for up to 100 server players, and recommends five players. Release behavior and networking can change, so check the launcher and project documentation when the server and client use different or older installations.

A successful connection depends on both the player and the host. The joining player needs the Nitrox Launcher installed and the host must provide an address that is reachable from the player’s network. An address that works only inside the host’s home network will not work for a player connecting over the internet.
Information to request from the host
- The server IP address or other address the host specifically tells you to enter.
- Whether the server is reachable directly over the internet or through a VPN/virtual-LAN connection.
- The Nitrox release the server is running, so you can check for an installation mismatch.
- Whether the host has started the server and confirmed that it has no critical errors.
Do not substitute an address from a different game server or guess which address to use. If the host is at home and you are elsewhere, the host generally needs to give you a reachable public address, while a private LAN address is intended for devices on that same local network.

Client-side checklist
- Install Nitrox and open the Nitrox Launcher.
- Run the launcher as Administrator, as recommended by the official guide.
- Use the same current release family that the server owner is using; if either installation is old, check the project’s current launcher and documentation before troubleshooting networking.
- Be ready to allow the game and server components through your operating system firewall if Windows blocks them.
Join a remote Nitrox server
The server IP is entered in the Nitrox Launcher, not in the ordinary Subnautica multiplayer menu. Follow these labels in order:
- Open Nitrox Launcher as Administrator. If the launcher is already open, close it and restart it with administrative rights before proceeding.
- Click Multiplayer. The multiplayer controls should appear after Nitrox finishes bootstrapping.
- Click Add server IP. This opens the form for saving a server connection.
- Enter a server name. Use a label you will recognize later, such as the host’s name or the world name.
- Enter the host-provided server IP. Copy it exactly. Do not replace it with
127.0.0.1unless you are joining a server running on your own computer, and do not use a private home-network address when you are outside that network. - Click Add server. The new entry is saved in the launcher.
- Select the saved server and click Connect to… Confirm that the selected entry is the one the host gave you.
- Enter a username, choose a color, and click Join. These values identify your player in the Nitrox session.
If the connection succeeds, Nitrox loads the multiplayer session. If it fails before the game opens, leave the launcher open long enough to note the exact error; that detail helps distinguish an incorrect address from a server, firewall, or bootstrap problem.

For a self-hosted local connection, Nitrox’s development documentation identifies the My server option and uses 127.0.0.1, also called localhost. This address points back to the computer you are using; it is not an internet address for friends on other networks.
- Start the local Nitrox server through the launcher’s My server option.
- Check that the server reports no critical errors.
- Confirm that the Multiplayer button appears after launcher bootstrapping.
- When adding the local connection, use
127.0.0.1as the server address. - Connect using the saved entry, then enter your username and color.
If the Multiplayer button never appears or the local server stops during startup, solve that bootstrap problem before testing router settings. The project documentation recommends reviewing Nitrox logs when bootstrapping fails.

What the host must configure for internet play
Joining is only possible when the host’s Nitrox server can receive the connection. Nitrox uses UDP port 11000. The host may need to make that port reachable through the router, use a VPN/virtual-LAN method, and permit the relevant programs through the firewall.
Option 1: Router port forwarding
Traditional internet hosting forwards UDP 11000 from the router to the computer running the Nitrox server. The exact router screens differ by manufacturer, but the host should create a forwarding rule for UDP traffic on port 11000 and direct it to the server computer’s local address. The host then gives players the reachable address associated with that internet connection, not the computer’s private LAN address.

Forwarding can fail if the rule points to the wrong computer, the local address changes, another router is upstream, or the internet provider uses a network arrangement that does not permit inbound connections. Nitrox’s official hosting guidance lists manual forwarding as an option; it does not guarantee that every home network will accept it.
Option 2: Automatic port mapping
The Nitrox homepage advertises UPnP automatic port forwarding. When supported and enabled on the network, this can reduce manual router configuration. The result still depends on the router, its UPnP settings, and the network’s ability to accept inbound traffic. If automatic mapping does not produce a reachable server, use the documented manual-forwarding or VPN approach instead.

Option 3: VPN or virtual LAN
A VPN/virtual-LAN arrangement can place the host and players on the same virtual network and avoid exposing a router port directly. The official hosting guide mentions Hamachi as an example. Everyone must join the same virtual network, and the host must give players the address that the VPN assigns for that shared network. A VPN does not remove the need for firewall permissions, and it will not help if one player is disconnected from the virtual network.
Firewall permissions
If a firewall blocks the session, both the host and the joining player may need exceptions for Subnautica.exe and NitroxServer-Subnautica.exe. Apply permissions on the machines where those processes run, and choose the network scope appropriate to the connection method. A rule for the game alone may not be enough when the separate Nitrox server process is the component listening for connections.
Choosing a connection method
The practical choice is between direct self-hosting, a VPN/virtual-LAN setup, and managed hosting. The official Nitrox pages do not verify any particular commercial host, so treat a hosting service’s release support, player limits, region, uptime, and pricing as claims to check separately.

For a small group, the recommended five-player figure shown on the Nitrox homepage is a useful planning reference, not a guarantee that every computer or network will perform identically. The advertised maximum of 100 players is a project figure, not a promise of stable performance for every self-hosted setup.

Troubleshooting connection failures
The Multiplayer button is missing
Restart the Nitrox Launcher as Administrator and wait for bootstrapping to finish. If the button is still absent, confirm that Nitrox is installed correctly and inspect the launcher’s status for critical errors. A missing button points to a launcher or bootstrap issue rather than a bad server IP.

- Ask the host to resend the address and confirm that no characters were omitted.
- Check whether you are outside the host’s home network. If so, a private LAN address will not be reachable; the host needs a reachable internet address or a shared VPN address.
- Confirm that the host actually started the Nitrox server and that it shows no critical errors.
- Verify that the host’s UDP 11000 path is configured, either through forwarding, successful UPnP mapping, or the agreed VPN.
The host can join locally, but friends cannot join
This pattern usually separates server software from internet reachability. Local success with 127.0.0.1 shows that the host can start and access the server on that computer; it does not prove that the router forwards UDP 11000 or that the host supplied the correct external address. Recheck the forwarding destination, the address sent to players, and firewall permissions for both executable files.
The connection times out
Have everyone confirm that the host and player are using the same VPN/virtual-LAN network if that method was chosen. If the group is using direct hosting, check that UDP 11000 is reachable and that the host’s firewall allows the Nitrox server process. A timeout can also result from an unavailable public server; Nitrox’s homepage notes that public servers are third-party and that 100% uptime is not ensured.
A firewall warning appears
Allow both Subnautica.exe and NitroxServer-Subnautica.exe on the relevant computers. If permissions were granted only on the player’s machine, the host may still be blocking inbound traffic; if they were granted only on the host, the player’s local firewall may still prevent the game from communicating.
The server worked previously but not after an update
Check the launcher and project documentation for the current Nitrox release before changing network settings. The homepage currently displays 1.8.1.0, but it does not provide a publication year for that figure. An older client or server can produce misleading connection symptoms, so have the host and players identify their installed releases first.

Where to find diagnostic logs
For launcher and server problems, inspect Nitrox logs under %APPDATA%Nitroxlogs. The development documentation also identifies the Subnautica Player.log location for game-side diagnostics. Record the first error and the time it occurred rather than copying only the final “connection failed” message; the earlier entry is often more useful for separating bootstrap, firewall, and address problems.
Public servers and availability
The Nitrox homepage describes public servers as third-party services. Their operators control availability, configuration, and maintenance, and the project does not promise 100% uptime for them. A public listing that worked yesterday may be offline or running a different release today. Check the server’s current status and release information before changing your own router or firewall.
For a private session with friends, self-hosting or a shared VPN gives the group clearer control over who can connect. Direct forwarding exposes a listening service through the host’s network, while a VPN adds a separate dependency that every participant must maintain. Neither method is universally superior; choose based on whether the group values simpler router configuration or fewer third-party network layers.
