There is no single global application or tryout for a League of Legends esports academy. The practical route is to find the official competitive circuit for your region and season, enter through its team or player-finding process, build a record in organized play, and follow current academy and team recruitment notices. Competition can help players develop and become visible, but it does not guarantee a tryout, contract, salary, or professional career.

What “academy” means in League of Legends

“Academy” does not refer to one worldwide admissions program. The term can describe different structures: a development team connected to a professional organization, a regional competition, or a prospect-identification event. Their entry rules and purpose vary by region, organizer, competition tier, and season.

For example, Riot and the Korea e-Sports Association described the LCK Academy Series in a 2020 announcement as a tournament for identifying prospects, and distinguished it from a second division sharing a player pool with the professional league. Riot’s 2021 North American amateur ecosystem update, by contrast, discussed an amateur tournament structure alongside Academy, including third-party Tier 2 tournaments and amateur teams. These are dated, regional examples—not current universal entry routes.

How to find the right route in your region

  1. Identify the current official circuit. Start with Riot’s regional esports pages and the competition organizer’s current site. Check which league, tournament tier, or amateur pathway serves your country or region this season.
  2. Check for an official team-finding channel. If you do not have a roster, look for the organizer’s current Discord, free-agent channel, or other team-matching process. Riot’s 2024 NLC guidance pointed teamless players in the Nordics, UK, and Ireland toward local looking-for-team channels. It is an example of a route, not a guarantee that the same channel or format remains current.
  3. Read the season’s rules before registering. Confirm whether entry is solo or team-based, who may register, and whether there are conditions tied to age, residency, rank or account, roster status, conduct, or professional eligibility.
  4. Enter the competition and keep playing. Take part in the organizer’s events, scrims, or league matches as the rules allow. Consistent organized play gives you relevant competitive experience; it does not automatically put you in front of an academy recruiter.
  5. Track recruitment separately. Follow current team and academy channels for open tryouts or roster announcements, then use only the application method and requirements in the current notice.

What eligibility rules can look like

Requirements belong to a particular competition and season. In its 2020 LCK Academy Series announcement, Riot and the Korea e-Sports Association described conditions involving age, rank, five-player team registration, and eligibility exclusions. Those conditions are historical and must not be treated as current LCK rules or as rules for other regions.

A different example is Riot’s Finnhouse Summer 2025 announcement for Finland: it said players of all ranks could participate, but required a full team and offered a Discord route for finding teammates or free agents. Its June 2025 signup deadlines have passed. The contrast illustrates why you should check the current rulebook rather than rely on an old post or assume a universal rank threshold.

  • Minimum or maximum age and any guardian requirements.
  • Residency, region, or server restrictions.
  • Rank, account standing, and account verification conditions.
  • Whether you need a complete roster or may register as an individual.
  • Roster registration rules, deadlines, and any restrictions involving existing professional or academy affiliations.
  • Conduct, eligibility, and other exclusions stated by the organizer.

How to present yourself to teams

There is no universal official application checklist in the sources cited here. As practical preparation, make a concise player profile that a team can assess quickly:

What an amateur competition can—and cannot—do

Regional leagues and amateur tournaments can provide structured matches, experience working with a roster, and a way to demonstrate performance. Riot’s North American update from 2021 described routes intended to connect amateur competition with Academy and LCS talent development, while its 2020 Korean announcement described the Academy Series as prospect identification.

Neither example promises that participation earns a tryout or offer. Recruitment depends on current team needs and the relevant team’s process. Treat organized play as a development and visibility opportunity, not a guaranteed career ladder.

Tryout expectations, gear, and legitimacy checks

Do not assume a particular mouse, keyboard, or mousepad is required. The sources cited here do not establish special hardware requirements for current tryouts. Riot’s Hall of Legends 2024 XL Mousepad listing describes a League of Legends accessory and marks it “Retired Limited Edition”; it is merchandise, not a career prerequisite. An old OPL rules document listed keyboards, mice, and mousepads in the context of historical live studio matches, which does not establish current tryout or tournament policy.

  • Is the organizer or team identifiable through current official channels?
  • Are the region, residency, age, rank, roster, and schedule conditions clear?
  • Is this a development league, an open tournament, or a genuine roster tryout?
  • Are dates and application instructions current, rather than copied from a past season?
  • Does the request match the stated process? Be cautious about anyone claiming that a fee, special gear, or guaranteed offer is required when the official rules do not say so.

A realistic career path

A sensible progression is to enter the strongest accessible official competition in your region, improve through regular team play, document your results, and monitor relevant recruitment channels. Depending on the region, that might involve a local amateur league, a regional tournament, or another organized route. From there, a team may invite players to a tryout or contact them through its own recruitment process—but no single rank, tournament, or application route guarantees that outcome.
