If a Rejetto HFS 2 server was exposed to the internet, restrict access now and treat it as a potential incident. Rejetto says HFS versions 2.3–2.4 are dangerous, have no official fix, and should be replaced with HFS 3. Exposure alone does not prove the server was compromised, but CISA added the associated vulnerability, CVE-2024-23692, to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog based on evidence of active exploitation.

What is known about the HFS 2 risk?

Rejetto’s HFS forum advisory identifies HFS v2.3m and v2.4.0 RC7 as affected by CVE-2024-23692, a template-engine vulnerability. The advisory warns that exploitation could let an attacker run or install programs on the computer hosting HFS 2. Rejetto’s product pages say HFS 2.3–2.4 is dangerous and has no official fix; the project recommends HFS 3.

On July 9, 2024, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said it added CVE-2024-23692 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog based on evidence of active exploitation. That confirms exploitation in the wild, not that a particular server was breached or how many installations were affected. The cited sources do not establish a reliable count of affected installations or successful compromises.

Is Rejetto HFS 2.3m vulnerable?

Yes. Rejetto’s July 22, 2024 forum advisory names v2.3m and v2.4.0 RC7 as affected. Rejetto’s current product warning covers versions 2.3–2.4 and says there is no official HFS 2 fix.

Does a proxy or temporary setting fix it?

No. A proxy, CDN, or firewall rule can restrict access, but it does not repair the vulnerable HFS 2 program or show that an earlier intrusion did not occur. Rejetto’s forum warning specifically says hiding HFS behind Cloudflare does not remove the underlying vulnerability if the server is discovered and targeted. A user in the forum discussion proposed disabling macros as a temporary configuration change; Rejetto does not present that as an official fix, and it cannot establish that an already exposed host is clean.

What should you do first?

Coordinate containment with the people responsible for security, IT operations, and affected services. Use trusted communications that do not depend on potentially compromised systems. If the server may be affecting other hosts or data, prioritize stopping the harm; if it is safe to do so, preserve volatile evidence before making changes that would erase it. Record what you did and when.

  1. Identify the exposed system. Record its address, HFS version, operating system, role, known exposure period, network connections, and any related systems that may be involved.
  2. Restrict access. Remove public access at an upstream firewall or other network control, or isolate the host from the network when appropriate. Coordinate the action if multiple systems may be implicated.
  3. Preserve evidence when feasible. Before shutting down or changing the system, consider collecting volatile data and relevant records if doing so will not prolong an active threat. If immediate containment takes precedence, act promptly and document the change.

These are general response practices reflected in CISA’s ransomware guidance and the UK National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC) guidance on active exploitation; they are not a Rejetto-published forensic procedure.

How do you investigate whether HFS was hacked?

There is no validated HFS-specific test or confirmed indicator list in the cited Rejetto, CISA, and NCSC material that can prove a server was or was not compromised. Investigate the host and the systems it could reach, and correlate records from the service, endpoint, identity, firewall, and network layers where they are available.

Preserve the records and system details

Keep a timeline of the exposure, containment, and collection actions. Preserve relevant HFS and web access logs, Windows and other host event logs, firewall and network records, endpoint alerts, account activity, and suspicious files or processes. Record configuration and template details, accessible shares, upload or management capabilities, accounts, and network controls. Where available and appropriate, responders may also consider memory capture and disk or system images before rebuilding.

Check for execution, access, and spread

Look for evidence that unauthorized commands or programs ran, files or accounts changed, credentials may have been exposed, or the host contacted unusual external systems. Determine whether there are signs of persistence or movement to other systems. Establish what files and data were reachable, whether they may have been accessed or staged, and whether there is evidence of transfer. CISA recommends identifying impacted systems and accounts and collecting logs, malware samples, and indicators; NCSC calls for a full investigation for compromise.

Do not treat the absence of a known indicator as proof of a clean system. Missing or incomplete logs also limit what you can conclude. A particular filename, IP address, command, registry key, or log pattern should not be labeled an HFS-specific indicator without authoritative validation.

How should you choose between isolation and evidence collection?

The sequence depends on the immediate risk and what evidence may be lost. CISA and NCSC support coordinated isolation, evidence collection, scope determination, and recovery planning; the operational trade-offs depend on the incident and environment.

  • Immediate threat: If the host is actively harming other systems or exposing data, contain it promptly. If responders can safely capture volatile evidence first, do so; otherwise, document the actions taken during containment.
  • Incident scope: If host, identity, or network records suggest lateral movement or related activity, expand the investigation beyond HFS to the potentially affected systems and accounts.
  • Service continuity: Decide whether the service can remain offline or needs a staged replacement. Do not put the original host back online solely to reduce downtime.
  • Data and credentials: Assess what data was reachable and what accounts, credentials, or tokens the service or host could access. Handle affected accounts based on the evidence and exposure.
  • Recovery basis: Confirm that backups are clean and validated and that the replacement platform is known-clean before restoring service.

How do you eradicate the risk and restore service?

Do not rely on the potentially compromised HFS 2 host as the foundation for recovery. Rebuild or replace the service on a clean, fully updated system, and restore only validated files from clean backups. Identify affected accounts and systems; where warranted, contain access and reset credentials from known-clean devices. Review permissions and network access, and complete the investigation and cleanup before exposing the replacement service publicly.

Rejetto recommends HFS 3 and says it has not been affected by this vulnerability. Its forum advisory says HFS 3 is a different project, HFS 2 configuration is incompatible, and configuration must be recreated. Treat that as the vendor’s migration direction, not as a guarantee that a particular HFS 3 deployment is secure.
