Start by separating an alert from a finding
AI systems can identify unusual text, redirects, code, traffic, or reputation signals, but a confidence score does not establish what happened, when it happened, or how far it spread. The same symptom can have a benign explanation: a scheduled deployment, a legitimate administrator action, a content-management plug-in update, a temporary hosting fault, or a false positive.

CISA’s 2024 incident-response playbook describes accurate detection and assessment as one of the hardest parts of response: determining whether an incident occurred and, if so, its type, extent, and magnitude across cloud, hybrid, host, and network systems. Your goal is therefore not to prove or disprove an alert with one scan. Build a time-stamped, corroborated account of the event.
Work only on a site you own or are authorized to administer. If you are a visitor who encountered a browser warning, do not attempt to investigate the server yourself. Record the page and warning, leave the site, and notify its operator through a trusted channel.

1. Record the original observation and reproduce it safely
Before changing files, restarting services, or dismissing the warning, make a contemporaneous record. Preserve the alert exactly as received, including its wording, confidence level, timestamp, affected URL or asset, and the system that generated it. Note who saw the behavior, from which location or device, and what they did immediately beforehand.
- Save screenshots or an exported report, but keep the original message or file as well.
- Record the time zone used by each system and your own clock.
- Describe the symptom in observable terms: an unexpected redirect, a browser interstitial, unfamiliar content, a new login, an outbound connection, or an error.
- Write down whether the behavior is repeatable, intermittent, limited to one page, or dependent on a particular browser, country, device, or account.
Do not repeatedly open suspicious pages on a production workstation. If a browser warning, drive-by download, or malicious redirect is involved, use a clean, controlled environment approved by your organization. Do not enter credentials into a page you are testing. A reproduction that changes cookies, executes code, or triggers a second-stage download can destroy evidence or expand the incident.
2. Check independent public and owner-facing signals
Google Search Console
If you are a verified owner, open Google Search Console and go to Security & Manual Actions > Security issues. Record the exact issue type, affected examples, first-detected date, and any notification sent to verified owners. Google documents warnings such as “This site may harm your computer” and “This site may be hacked.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSearch Console shows what Google has detected or associated with your property. It does not enumerate every compromised server, account, database, cloud resource, or stolen credential. An empty report is not a guarantee that the site is clean, especially when the compromise is new, hidden from crawlers, or outside Google’s view.
Safe Browsing and browser warnings
Use Google Safe Browsing’s URL status check from a clean system and save the result with its date and the exact URL tested. A Safe Browsing status is a reputation signal for that URL at that time; it is not a forensic examination of your host.
Inspect the site without changing it
From a controlled environment, compare affected pages with known-good releases, backups, or content records. Look for unauthorized redirects, injected scripts, new administrator accounts, modified configuration, unfamiliar scheduled jobs, unknown files, and unexpected changes to DNS or certificates. Treat each as an observation requiring corroboration, not as a standalone signature of compromise.

3. Preserve evidence before cleanup
Cleaning first can erase the timestamps and artifacts needed to determine the initial access route and full scope. CISA recommends preserving data for incident verification and collecting evidence from perimeter, internal-network, and endpoint sources. Its examples include audit, transaction, intrusion, connection, system-performance, and user-activity logs.
Preservation checklist
- Export relevant web-server access and error logs, application logs, authentication records, administrator audit trails, hosting or cloud control-plane logs, DNS and firewall records, deployment history, and file-integrity reports.
- Keep an untouched original copy and work from a duplicate. Do not silently overwrite or rotate the only copy.
- Record collection time, time zone, collector, system, file name, and transfer or storage location.
- Preserve available backups and snapshots, including their creation dates and retention status.
- Note any action already taken, such as a password reset, cache purge, service restart, file deletion, or restoration.
- Restrict access to evidence and maintain a simple transfer log showing who handled it and when.
When forensic analysis is necessary and feasible, preserving memory and disk images may be appropriate. NIST SP 800-86 provides practical computer and network-forensic guidance, while expressly noting that it is not a comprehensive step-by-step forensic manual or legal advice. Imaging a live production system can itself alter evidence, so use a qualified responder when the stakes justify it.
CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide recommends keeping and backing up logs for critical systems for a minimum of one year if possible. That is a general security recommendation, not a universal legal requirement and not a promise that your host retains a year of historical data.
4. Build a timeline and test authorized explanations
Put observations in a single timeline normalized to one time zone. Include deployments, administrator logins, support actions, password changes, DNS edits, certificate renewals, hosting tickets, vulnerability scans, and the first report of suspicious behavior. Mark which entries come from a trusted system and which are merely reported observations.
Then correlate records rather than counting anomalies. CISA guidance emphasizes distinguishing suspected incidents from authorized administrative activity and using known indicators, frequency and pattern analysis, and analyst review of anomalies. Ask:
- Was there an approved deployment or content edit at the same time as the changed page?
- Does the login originate from an expected administrator, device, address range, or identity-provider event?
- Does the web request that preceded a file change appear in application and reverse-proxy logs as well as the server log?
- Do DNS, firewall, or cloud audit records support the claimed time?
- Is the behavior reproducible, or did a cache, experiment, or monitoring probe create it?
An illustrative sequence—an unexpected request, followed by a successful login, a configuration change, and an outbound connection—is more persuasive when independent records agree. It is not a universal compromise signature. Conversely, if critical logs were never collected or have already been overwritten, some incident facts may no longer be determinable.

5. Compare evidence sources and understand their limits
| Evidence source | What it can show | Important limitation | Handling priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI alert or scanner report | A claimed anomaly, indicator, page, or pattern | May lack context, contain false positives, and cannot establish full scope | Save the original output and validate independently |
| Search Console or Safe Browsing | Google’s detection or reputation view for a URL or property | Does not cover every host, account, data store, or undetected page | Record exact issue, URL, date, and examples |
| Web and application logs | Requests, responses, errors, authenticated actions, and application events | May be incomplete, altered, sampled, or missing client context | Export originals before rotation or cleanup |
| Identity and administrator audit logs | Logins, privilege changes, token use, and account activity | Coverage depends on provider settings and retention | Preserve identity-provider and hosting-console records |
| Host, cloud, DNS, firewall, and proxy records | Infrastructure changes, connections, routing, and control-plane actions | May be held by a provider or use different clocks and identifiers | Request exports promptly and document time zones |
| Known-good releases and backups | Differences in files, configuration, and content | A backup can already contain the compromise or omit runtime changes | Compare copies; do not restore blindly over evidence |
6. Scope the investigation beyond the first page
Once an anomaly is corroborated, determine the likely initial access route, affected services and accounts, privileges obtained, persistence or continued access, and operational or information impact. Revisit these questions as new records arrive. Scope should include more than the URL that triggered the alert.
Files, applications, and configurations
- Compare deployed files and configuration with a trusted release or repository.
- Check for newly created scripts, web shells, modified templates, altered rewrite rules, and unexpected scheduled tasks.
- Review application users, administrator roles, API tokens, service accounts, and password-reset events.
- Inspect outbound connections and DNS changes for services the application does not normally use.
Hosting and cloud control plane
Review panel logins, instance or container changes, storage permissions, security-group edits, key creation, snapshots, and support-account activity. A clean web directory does not rule out a compromised control-plane account or another service on the same host.
Laravel and exposed .env files
A CISA and FBI advisory about Androxgh0st describes activity that checks for an exposed root-level .env file in Laravel applications. Such a file may contain credentials for databases, mail services, cloud resources, or other providers. If your application uses Laravel, check whether the file was publicly readable, whether web or proxy logs show access, and whether related credentials were used afterward. Treat exposed secrets as compromised: rotate them through the relevant providers, invalidate dependent tokens, and review access logs. This is a specific threat example, not a claim that every website intrusion uses this technique.

7. Decide whether immediate containment is necessary
If an attacker appears to have active access, is exfiltrating data, is changing systems, or is distributing malware, containment may take priority over a complete first-pass collection. Follow your organization’s incident-response plan and coordinate containment with evidence preservation.
- Separate affected systems or restrict malicious traffic using documented, reversible controls where possible.
- Disable or rotate compromised credentials after preserving the authentication evidence needed for the investigation.
- Do not delete suspicious files, wipe a server, or rebuild every system before a responder decides what must be preserved.
- Record every containment action, exact time, operator, and resulting service impact.
There is no universal safe command or hosting-panel sequence: the correct action depends on the platform, access route, business continuity needs, and whether customer data is at risk.
8. Know when to bring in an incident responder
Seek qualified incident-response or digital-forensics assistance promptly when evidence indicates unauthorized access, exposed credentials, persistence, sensitive-data impact, an active intrusion, or a need to collect memory and disk evidence beyond your team’s competence. CISA discusses third-party IT security support for subject-matter expertise, technical response, eradication, and reducing residual-compromise risk.

Escalation is also appropriate when logs are incomplete, multiple systems or tenants may be involved, an administrator account is suspected, or the organization cannot preserve evidence independently. Tell the responder what was observed, what has already changed, and where the original records are stored.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Remediate, verify, and monitor for recurrence
After the scope and access route are understood, remediate from a trusted basis: remove unauthorized persistence, patch the exploited weakness, rebuild systems when appropriate, rotate affected secrets, restore known-good content, and harden accounts and logging. Keep a record of each change and its reason.
Verification should use more than one method where possible. For example, combine a file or configuration comparison with an independent scan, review of authentication and outbound-connection logs, and a fresh check of Search Console or Safe Browsing status. A single “clean” scan cannot prove that every account, host, or data store is unaffected.
Continue monitoring for the indicators and behaviors identified during the investigation. CISA’s Log4j advisory, as a vulnerability-specific example, recommends using multiple methods to verify mitigation and monitoring the asset; do not treat those Log4j-specific procedures as a universal website-cleanup recipe.
Questions owners commonly ask
How do I know if my website has been hacked?
You know more than you did when independent records establish unauthorized access or unauthorized changes. A warning, odd page, or single log entry is evidence to investigate, not a complete finding. Confirmation normally comes from a coherent timeline linking an unapproved action to a changed file, account, configuration, or connection.

Is an AI website-hack alert real?
It may identify a real symptom, but its confidence score is only a claim until corroborated. Preserve the alert, check owner-facing and public signals, and compare it with server, application, account, and infrastructure records.
What if Google says “This site may be hacked”?
Record the Search Console issue and affected examples, then inspect the site and underlying systems. Google’s definition is specific: “Hacked content is any content placed on your site without your permission as a result of vulnerabilities in your site’s security.” That establishes Google’s finding about content, not the complete extent of the incident.
Should I delete the suspicious file immediately?
Not if it is safe to preserve it and the incident is not actively harming users. Copy and protect the original, document its location and timestamps, and coordinate removal with your incident-response process. If immediate containment is necessary, record the action and obtain qualified help.
Can a clean backup prove the site was never compromised?
No. Backups can predate the intrusion, omit runtime changes, or already contain unauthorized content. Use them as comparison points and potential restoration sources while checking their integrity and creation history.
Bottom line
Investigate the alert as a hypothesis. Preserve what can still be preserved, correlate independent records with authorized activity, expand the scope from the first page to accounts and infrastructure, and escalate when access, secrets, persistence, or sensitive data may be involved. The objective is a defensible timeline and a verified recovery—not reassurance from a single scan.
