A company share gives you exposure to one issuer; an ETF gives you an interest in a portfolio whose definition of “space” may also include businesses with substantial non-space operations. Compare the actual holdings, rules, concentration, costs and risks—not just a fund’s name or ticker. These are public-market routes, not guarantees of returns or personal investment recommendations.
What public-market space investing means
You do not need to buy shares in a private company to get public-market exposure to space-related business. You can buy shares of a listed company with relevant operations, or buy shares in an ETF that owns a collection of public companies.

Relevant activities can include launch services, satellite equipment and operations, satellite communications, Earth observation, positioning, and software or data derived from space activity. These categories appear in fund eligibility definitions; they are not a complete list of suitable companies. A listed company may also have large business lines unrelated to space.

ETFs can span many companies and industries, but some are less diversified. Their shares trade at market prices during the day, which can differ from the value of the underlying portfolio. The SEC’s ETF overview explains these features and notes that fund costs affect returns.

Choose between individual shares and a space ETF
Individual listed companies
Buying a public company’s shares gives you exposure to that issuer’s results and risks. This can be a more direct way to invest in a particular space-related business, but it is concentrated in one company. Its space operations may be only one part of a larger enterprise, and the company can face risks unrelated to the space industry.
Space-themed ETFs
An ETF can spread exposure across multiple issuers, but a thematic label does not guarantee either broad diversification or “pure-play” exposure. Index funds follow rules for selecting and weighting holdings; actively managed funds rely on a manager’s decisions. The mandate determines what counts as space-related, and the portfolio can change.

Several SEC-filed documents illustrate how different these products can be. The figures below are tied to the dates and documents shown; they are not a ranking or a complete list of available funds.
| Fund | Approach and stated terms | What to note |
|---|---|---|
| First Trust Bloomberg Space Economy ETF | The July 9, 2026 summary prospectus says the fund seeks generally to correspond to the Bloomberg Space Economy Index, normally invests at least 80% of assets in index securities, and lists total annual fund operating expenses of 0.65%. | These are terms in a dated prospectus. Check the latest prospectus and holdings before making a decision. SEC-filed summary prospectus. |
| Tema Space Innovators ETF (NASA) | The March 30, 2026 prospectus describes active management and a policy to invest at least 80% of net assets, under normal circumstances, in publicly listed companies engaged in “space-related business.” | The definition includes companies where space products or services are significant but account for less than half of annual revenue. The prospectus says NASA is only the trading symbol and the fund is not affiliated with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. SEC-filed summary prospectus. |
| Procure Space ETF (UFO) | The shareholder report for the six months ending April 30, 2026 describes the fund as non-diversified and states an annual advisory fee of 0.75%. | The report identifies risks including satellite manufacturing or launch failures, signal interference, space debris, regulation, and smaller-company volatility and liquidity. SEC-filed shareholder report. |
| VegaShares SpaceX & Beyond Earth ETF | The June 14, 2026 prospectus describes an actively managed, non-diversified strategy that expected to maintain meaningfully higher SpaceX exposure for a period after the IPO and generally hold 20–30 companies. | The prospectus says SpaceX shares began trading on Nasdaq at or about June 12, 2026. The allocation can change; review current holdings and later filings to understand concentration. SEC-filed summary prospectus. |
How to compare space investments
Use current fund filings and company information to check what you would actually own. These questions help distinguish exposure that sounds similar by name but differs in practice.

- What qualifies as space-related? Check the fund’s definition and whether it requires a minimum share of revenue from space. Some mandates can include companies whose space-related products or services are significant but contribute less than half of revenue.
- What are the holdings and largest weights? Look at the number of issuers and each position’s weight. A fund with many holdings can still have meaningful exposure to one company. Holdings can change, so use a recent portfolio disclosure.
- How is the portfolio managed? Find out whether the fund tracks an index or is actively managed. Review how constituents are chosen, removed and weighted, and how often the portfolio may change.
- What are the costs? Compare annual operating expenses or advisory fees, while recognizing that brokerage, transaction and other costs may not be included in a headline figure. Fund expenses reduce the return otherwise available to investors; check current filings rather than relying on an old fee figure. The SEC discusses ETF costs in its ETF overview.
- How does it trade? Review trading volume, the bid–ask spread and the market price relative to net asset value. An ETF’s exchange-traded price can differ from the value of its underlying holdings.
- What risks are built into the exposure? Consider company-specific and small-company risks as well as launch, manufacturing, satellite operations, regulation, spectrum, financing and competing-technology risks. Procure’s report, for example, describes possible launch or manufacturing failures, signal interference and space debris as risks for its satellite-focused holdings.
- What else is in scope? Check the fund’s geography and whether it includes aerospace or defense, communications, software, or companies that use satellite services—not only businesses focused on space activity.
Risks to understand before investing
Space-related businesses can be exposed to operational setbacks and technological change as well as ordinary company and market risks. A failed launch, manufacturing problem, signal disruption, regulatory change or financing difficulty can affect an issuer or a fund holding it. Smaller companies may also be more volatile or less liquid. An ETF can distribute some company-specific exposure across holdings, but a thematic fund may remain concentrated or non-diversified.
Review the latest official filings for a fund’s mandate, fees, risks and holdings. The fund examples above are anchored to filings dated in 2026; those documents do not establish that the same terms, allocations or availability will continue.
