Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteInternational investors who want to buy shares listed in Thailand generally need to open an account with a Thai brokerage firm. Whether a broker accepts applicants from your country, allows remote account opening, and offers the particular Thai share line you want is broker-specific; confirm those points before transferring money. The practical choice is also about what you want to own: local shares, foreign shares marked “-F,” and NVDRs marked “-R” can carry different rights.
Can an international investor buy Thai stocks?
The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) describes direct market access through a Thai brokerage account. Its investor guide covers selecting a broker, applying for an account, funding it, and placing orders online or through an investment consultant. That guide does not establish that every broker accepts nonresident or remotely onboarded applicants. Start by asking brokers whether they accept residents of your country and support the account and instruments you need.

SET lists the following documents for foreign applicants: a passport, a work permit if working in Thailand, evidence of a bank account, and a six-month bank statement. Requirements and onboarding options may differ by broker, so request that broker’s current checklist before applying.

A company may have different trading lines. Check the exact ticker and security information before placing an order: the local line, a foreign line marked “-F,” and an NVDR marked “-R” are not interchangeable in their rights.

| Foreign shares (-F) | A foreign trading line with dividend and voting rights, according to SET. | Foreign ownership limits apply. Check the security’s current foreign holding information and trading liquidity. SET investor guide |
| NVDRs (-R) | Financial benefits similar to the underlying shares, without voting rights. | Designed to facilitate foreign investment in the presence of ownership limits; check availability for the security and current rules. SET investor guide · Thai NVDR |

What an NVDR does—and does not do
An NVDR is a specific instrument intended to make investment possible despite foreign ownership limits; it is not a voting share. Thai NVDR describes financial benefits similar to the underlying shares but no voting rights. The SEC said its 2024 rule changes were intended to keep NVDR services aligned with supporting foreign investment and to prevent Thai investors from using them to evade rules. Review current availability and rules rather than assuming every company has an NVDR line. Thai NVDR · SEC rule changes
How to open an account and place an order
- Find a SET member broker. Use SET’s broker information, then contact firms directly. Ask whether they accept applicants resident in your country, permit remote onboarding, and support the ticker and share line you intend to trade. SET investor guide
- Confirm the account type and terms. SET describes cash, prepaid cash-balance, and credit or margin account types. Ask the broker for current commissions, minimum balances and order sizes, funding methods, currency conversion costs, and settlement arrangements before choosing one.
- Complete the broker’s application. Prepare the foreign-applicant documents SET lists—passport, work permit if you work in Thailand, bank account evidence, and a six-month bank statement—and confirm any additional requirements with the broker.
- Fund the account and check settlement. SET’s investor guide describes T+2 settlement for cash-account trades: settlement two business days after the trade date. The guide does not establish that every broker or instrument has identical handling, so ask how your account will be funded and settled. SET investor guide
- Check the exact security line, then place the order. Confirm whether the order is for a local share, “-F” foreign share, or “-R” NVDR, and review rights, available foreign/NVDR room, and liquidity. SET says orders can be placed through a broker’s online system or an investment consultant.
Understand Thai tax withholding and your home-country obligations
SET’s tax summary states that individual investors’ capital gains from direct investment in SET/TFEX are tax-exempt in Thailand and that dividends are generally subject to 10% withholding. These are Thai tax treatments, not a complete calculation of what an international investor owes. Your overall position may depend on whether you invest as an individual or entity, your tax residence, treaty eligibility, and your home country’s rules, including rules concerning remittances.

Before trading, ask the broker how dividends are paid and withheld, what tax statements it provides, and whether it can support treaty documentation. For your final tax position, consult a qualified source familiar with your jurisdiction. SET tax summary
