How to Invest in Space Stocks Without Buying SpaceX Shares

You can get public-market exposure to space-related businesses without owning SpaceX by researching individual listed companies or a fund that holds several issuers. Examples include Rocket Lab (RKLB), Planet Labs (PL), and the Procure Space ETF (UFO). None is a direct substitute for SpaceX, and a “space” label does not mean a company earns all its revenue from space. These are research starting points, not investment recommendations.

Choose between individual stocks and a fund

Route What it offers What to check
Individual company shares Exposure to the selected issuer’s business and risks. What it sells, how much of its business is space-related, its financial condition, customer concentration, execution risks, share class, and listing.
Sector-focused fund Exposure to a basket of issuers through one fund. Mandate, current holdings and weights, concentration, expense ratio, turnover, liquidity, index or active approach, and how space-related each holding’s business is.
Broad-market fund Potential indirect exposure if the fund owns relevant issuers. Current constituents and the fund documentation applicable in your jurisdiction. Specific exposure is not established without checking those details.

A fund with multiple holdings is not automatically diversified: its largest positions, sector overlap, and the businesses those issuers actually run all matter. Fees, trading liquidity, geographic and currency exposure, and use of leverage or derivatives are also useful comparison points.

Research individual space-related companies

Rocket Lab (RKLB)

Rocket Lab’s 2025 Form 10-K describes activities including launch services, spacecraft design, spacecraft components and manufacturing, and on-orbit management solutions. Its stock trades under RKLB. Read the company’s current filing for its financial condition, customer exposure, and specific operational and execution risks; its range of activities does not make it a pure-play space investment. Rocket Lab filings with the SEC.

Planet Labs (PL)

Planet Labs’ FY2026 filing describes a business that uses space-based imaging to make global change visible, accessible, and actionable. Its listed Class A shares trade under PL on the NYSE. The company’s imaging focus differs from Rocket Lab’s launch and spacecraft activities; assess each on its own filings and risks. Planet Labs filings with the SEC.

Understand what a space ETF owns

The Procure Space ETF (UFO) offers an example of a multi-issuer fund, but its reported holdings are a dated snapshot rather than a statement of its current portfolio. Its SEC-filed semi-annual report for the six months ended April 30, 2026 reported 51 holdings. The report listed these top issuer weights as percentages of net assets:

Issuer Weight reported April 30, 2026
Planet Labs 6.2%
ViaSat 5.9%
Globalstar 5.3%
Rocket Lab 5.0%
Iridium 4.5%

These figures describe the fund report’s April 30, 2026 snapshot, not today’s holdings or weights. Its top ten included companies in communications, technology, and other sectors as well as space-focused businesses. Check the fund’s latest prospectus and holdings before making a decision, including its mandate, costs, liquidity, concentration, and the nature of each issuer’s space exposure. Procure Space ETF filings with the SEC.

Why daily leveraged funds are a different proposition

A leveraged single-stock ETF is not a diversified space-sector allocation and is not equivalent to holding a larger number of shares of the underlying company. Direxion’s summary prospectus dated June 15, 2026 describes a daily 2× objective and warns that investors should not expect the fund’s return over a period longer or shorter than one trading day to equal 200% of SpaceX’s performance. Daily compounding can make returns over longer periods diverge from that simple multiple. The prospectus also discusses single-company and industry concentration and risks associated with recently public shares. This is a risk example, not a way to avoid exposure to the underlying company; review the current prospectus and product terms. Direxion filings with the SEC.

Check the risks before investing

A sector label alone does not establish a company’s revenue mix, competitive position, valuation, financial health, or suitability for you. Space-related businesses may face launch, technical, regulatory, customer, financing, and execution risks. The relevant risks differ by issuer, so use its latest filings rather than assuming examples in the same sector share the same profile.

  1. Identify the actual exposure. Determine what the company sells and how much of its business is tied to space; for a fund, inspect holdings and issuer weights.
  2. Read primary documents. Review the issuer’s latest filings or the fund’s current prospectus and reports for business details, finances, risks, fees, and investment approach.
  3. Compare concentration and structure. Consider customer and holding concentration, liquidity, turnover, geographic and currency exposure, and whether leverage or derivatives are involved.
  4. Make the decision in context. Consider your own objectives, time horizon, and ability to withstand losses. No example here is a recommendation or an assessment of current price, valuation, performance, or individual suitability.
