The key distinction: a commodity pool such as United States Oil Fund (USO) buys futures on your behalf, while energy equities represent businesses whose results may be affected by oil prices. Neither is a guaranteed way to match crude oil’s spot price.
Choose the kind of oil exposure you want
“Investing in oil” can mean holding a security tied to oil futures, or owning shares in companies involved in energy. Those routes behave differently, so start by deciding whether you want a commodity-linked product or exposure to energy businesses.

Listed oil commodity pools
A commodity pool such as USO sells listed shares to investors and invests primarily in oil futures contracts. Buying its shares means you do not personally open and manage a futures position; it does not mean you own barrels of crude. USO is a Delaware limited partnership and commodity pool, and its shares trade on NYSE Arca. Its latest filings describe a benchmark based on the near-month NYMEX light-sweet crude contract, rolling into the next-month contract over an approximate five-day period. See the USCF USO product page and the 2025 Form 10-K, filed in 2026.

USO’s stated objective is framed around daily percentage changes in net asset value (NAV) relative to the benchmark, taking collateral interest and expenses into account. Its 2025 annual report describes a 30-successive-valuation-day objective under which average daily percentage change in NAV may be within plus or minus 10% of the benchmark’s average daily percentage change. That is a limited objective, not a guarantee, and does not say the fund will match spot oil’s dollar price or its long-term return.

Oil-company shares and energy-equity funds
Buying an oil-company stock or a fund holding energy-company shares gives you exposure to businesses, not a direct crude-price benchmark. A company’s operating results and share price can reflect more than crude prices, while a fund’s performance depends on its underlying holdings. The SEC’s ETF guide explains that ETF portfolios hold securities or other assets and that an ETF share price can differ from NAV. Do not treat an energy-equity fund as a close substitute for crude oil.
Other oil-linked products
You may also encounter products referencing another crude benchmark, a basket of commodities, or contracts with different maturities. Their holdings, roll schedules, objectives, and risks can differ from USO’s. Review each product’s latest prospectus and holdings rather than assuming that USO’s benchmark or disclosures apply to it.

Why an oil-linked fund may not track spot crude
USO’s benchmark is tied to futures contracts, not barrels held in storage. When a futures contract approaches expiration, the benchmark rolls into a later contract. If the near-month contract is cheaper than the next-month contract—a market structure called contango—the sponsor says that, absent an overall oil-price move, the benchmark contract value tends to decline as expiration approaches. Backwardation and other market conditions can affect returns differently. USCF describes these effects in its risk disclosures and the fund’s quarterly report for the period ended June 30, 2026.
USO’s SEC filing cautions that neither the benchmark nor the fund is a proxy for spot crude. Correlation can be imperfect; expenses and transaction costs reduce returns, and conditions such as position limits or market disruptions can affect correlation. The 30-day objective can also be met despite significant deviations on individual days.

As USCF’s product disclosure puts it: “AN INVESTMENT IN USO SHOULD NOT BE VIEWED AS AN INVESTMENT IN THE BENCHMARK OIL FUTURES CONTRACT OR LIGHT SWEET CRUDE OIL.”

Compare products only after checking their current documents; a ticker or the word “oil” in a fund’s name does not establish what exposure it provides. Use the latest prospectus and shareholder report, as the SEC recommends, and check:

- Exposure target: WTI, Brent, an equity portfolio, or a broader basket.
- Holdings and instruments: futures, other oil-related investments, company shares, or a mix.
- Contract maturities and roll schedule: relevant for futures-based products and a potential source of return differences.
- Objective and tracking history: read what the fund actually seeks to track and over what period.
- Costs and trading: review stated expenses as well as brokerage costs, liquidity, and the bid-ask spread.
- Price versus NAV: an ETF’s exchange price may be above or below the value of its underlying assets.
- Distributions and risks: consult the current prospectus for product-specific terms and risks.
The SEC’s ETF guide explains NAV and market-price differences and advises investors to read a fund’s prospectus and shareholder report. Tax treatment depends on the product and an investor’s circumstances; consult the current fund documents and a qualified tax professional for individualized questions.
