Both are fund-based routes that aim to follow an index, but they are bought and priced differently. Futures are a separate, more complex route: they are exchange-traded derivative contracts, not fund units, and their lot size, margin and expiry terms must be checked before trading.
What you are investing in
The Nifty 50 and Nifty Bank are indexes, not investment products you can buy directly. To seek exposure to either index, an investor can use a fund that tracks it or, with a derivatives account and an understanding of the risks, trade an index futures contract. The route matters: owning a fund unit and entering a futures contract do not create the same obligations or experience.

An index fund or ETF aims to replicate an index by holding its constituent securities in similar proportions. Its return can differ from the index because of expenses and tracking. A futures contract instead provides exposure to an index under exchange-defined contract terms. It has an expiry and requires the trader to understand the contract value and margin; it is not a substitute for owning fund units.
This guide concerns Indian-market products and NSE contract information. It is educational, not individualized financial advice. The appropriate route depends on your intended holding period, ability to tolerate losses, transaction preferences and familiarity with the product.

Choose a route by purpose
| Route | What you hold or trade | How transactions work | What to compare or verify | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Index mutual fund | Units in a mutual fund that aims to replicate a chosen index. | Transactions are based on the applicable mutual-fund NAV, which AMFI says is declared after markets close. | Benchmark, scheme expenses, tracking error or tracking difference, and direct or regular plan terms. | Returns may diverge from the index because of expenses and tracking. |
| ETF | Units in an index-tracking fund, traded on an exchange. | Units trade like shares, so the exchange price changes during the session. Brokerage and demat costs may apply. | Benchmark, expenses, tracking, liquidity, bid-ask spread, brokerage and demat charges. | The traded price can differ from the fund’s NAV; trading costs and liquidity affect the transaction. |
| Index futures | An exchange-traded derivative contract whose underlying is an index. | Choose a listed contract month and trade through a brokerage account enabled for derivatives. | Current lot size, notional exposure, margin, expiry, settlement, liquidity and any roll costs. | Contract terms change, and derivatives have distinct risk characteristics. A futures position is not fund ownership. |
SEBI describes index mutual funds as seeking to replicate an index such as the Nifty 50, and ETFs as units traded on an exchange like shares. Its investor guidance also advises understanding the features and risk characteristics of securities, including derivatives. These product differences are more useful for choosing a route than treating all three as interchangeable ways to “buy the index.”
Index mutual funds: a NAV-based route
How they work
An index mutual fund pools investors’ money and aims to hold the index constituents in similar proportions. It is a passive strategy: the objective is to follow the chosen benchmark rather than select securities through active stock picking. The fund’s actual result can differ from its benchmark because of costs and tracking performance.

Mutual-fund transactions use NAV rather than a live exchange quote. AMFI states that mutual fund NAVs are declared after markets close; this differs from a stock or ETF price, which moves during the trading session. The NAV-based process means an order does not guarantee a particular intraday price.

- Confirm the benchmark. Check whether the scheme tracks the Nifty 50 or Nifty Bank. A fund’s name alone is not enough; read its scheme information and current AMC disclosures to verify the benchmark.
- Compare like with like. For funds tracking the same index, compare scheme expenses and published tracking error or tracking difference over consistent periods. Also check whether the terms you are comparing are for a direct or regular plan.
- Review the transaction process. Use the AMC or a mutual-fund transaction service and follow its current instructions for account setup, identity checks, payment and purchase. The precise interface and required steps vary by provider, so confirm them there rather than relying on a generic menu path.
- Check the applicable NAV and scheme documents. Read the current scheme information before placing an order, including the benchmark and charges. A NAV is declared after market close, not quoted as a continuously updating trading price.
- Keep records and review the right measure. Track the scheme’s performance against its stated benchmark and examine its disclosed tracking information. Comparing only a headline return without checking the benchmark, period and costs can mislead.
Current expenses and comparable tracking figures for particular schemes are not established here, so this article cannot rank fund providers or identify a “best” scheme. Obtain current figures from the AMC’s disclosures and compare the same index and periods.

ETFs: exchange-traded index fund units
What changes compared with a mutual fund
An ETF is also a fund product, but its units trade on an exchange like shares. As a result, a buyer sees a live market price during the session rather than placing a transaction solely at the mutual-fund NAV process. SEBI notes that brokerage and demat costs can apply in addition to fund expenses.
Because an ETF is traded, the displayed price and the amount a buyer can transact at depend on the exchange market. Consider liquidity and the bid-ask spread—the gap between available buy and sell prices—alongside the fund’s ongoing expenses and tracking. A low scheme expense alone does not establish that an ETF is the cheapest transaction for a particular order.

How to compare or buy an ETF
- Verify the index and scheme. Confirm the ETF’s benchmark, scheme name and current availability through the AMC and exchange. Names and availability can change; verify that the product tracks the index you actually intend to follow.
- Compare fund-level measures. For ETFs tracking the same index, compare expenses and published tracking error or tracking difference over matching periods. Tracking error measures the difference between portfolio returns and benchmark returns, as SEBI Investor explains.
- Check market conditions before placing an order. Review the available bid and ask prices, spread and trading liquidity. A listed ETF can have a moving price during the session, unlike an order processed using the mutual-fund NAV process.
- Account for transaction charges. Include brokerage and any demat-related costs in your comparison with an index mutual fund. Verify the current schedule with your broker; charges are not the same across all accounts.
- Place and verify the trade through your broker. Use the broker’s current order screen and confirm the ETF symbol, quantity, order type and displayed price before submitting. After execution, check the order status and holdings. Exact labels and controls vary by broker.
NSE Clearing has listed examples such as Nippon India ETF Nifty BeES, SBI-ETF NIFTY 50 and SBI-ETF NIFTY BANK in a circular. That circular’s minimum quantities relate to a specific cross-margin context, not a general retail purchase minimum. Confirm current scheme names, benchmark, availability and costs with the AMC and exchange rather than using that circular to infer how much a retail investor must buy.

Futures: a contract, not a long-term fund holding
What the NSE contract information says
NSE lists futures on both the Nifty 50 and Nifty Bank. Its contract specification page, marked updated 11 August 2026, lists three consecutive monthly futures expiries for the indices. NSE describes the Nifty 50 contracts as near-, next- and far-month contracts; its Bank Nifty page likewise describes a maximum three-month trading cycle.
Best Value
The same NSE contract specification page states that expiry is on the Tuesday of the expiry period, or on the previous trading day if that Tuesday is a holiday. These details are time-sensitive. The exchange’s currently applicable contract file—not an old article, screenshot or remembered lot size—is the authority to check before entering a position.
Understand the terms before placing an order
- Underlying: Identify whether the contract is on Nifty 50 or Nifty Bank. Do not assume a similarly named product has the same underlying or terms.
- Contract month and expiry: Choose the listed month deliberately and note its current expiry date. A futures position is tied to a particular contract period.
- Lot size and exposure: Check the current lot size and calculate the contract’s notional exposure using the current index level and contract terms. Do not rely on stale lot-size examples.
- Margin: Confirm the margin requirement with your broker immediately before the trade. Current margin figures are not established here and may vary with the contract and applicable requirements.
- Settlement and exit plan: Understand the contract’s settlement process and decide how you will close or manage the position before expiry. Verify current details with NSE and your broker.
- Liquidity and costs: Review the contract’s trading liquidity and account for transaction and any roll costs if you intend to move exposure from an expiring contract into a later month.
A cautious futures workflow
- Learn the contract before funding a trade. Read the live NSE specifications for the chosen index, then confirm the broker offers the specific contract and that your account is enabled for derivatives.
- Establish the exposure and maximum loss you can tolerate. Work out the notional exposure from the current contract terms. Margin is a trading requirement, not a measure that makes the full exposure disappear; understand the potential loss before submitting an order.
- Choose the expiry and verify the current terms. Check the contract month, lot size, expiry, margin and settlement details on the day you plan to trade. Exchange-defined parameters can change.
- Use the broker’s derivatives order screen carefully. Confirm the index, contract month, buy or sell direction, number of lots, order type and price. Do not proceed if any field or risk implication is unclear.
- Monitor and manage the position. Keep track of the position, margin requirements and expiry. If you intend to maintain exposure beyond expiry, understand the costs and mechanics of closing one contract and entering another; do not assume a futures position automatically behaves like a perpetual investment.
SEBI advises investors to understand the risk characteristics of derivatives before investing. This guide does not provide a current margin, tax treatment or individualized trading strategy. If contract mechanics, exposure or potential losses are unclear, a futures position is not an appropriate shortcut to fund ownership.
How to compare funds that track the same index
Compare on a like-for-like basis. First verify that both products use the same benchmark; a Nifty 50 fund and a Nifty Bank fund are not comparable versions of the same exposure. Then use consistent periods and disclosures when comparing the measures below.
| Measure | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Benchmark | The exact index the scheme says it tracks. | Returns and tracking can only be meaningfully compared against the intended index. |
| Expenses | Current scheme expenses and, for a mutual fund, whether the terms are for direct or regular plan units. | Costs reduce the investor’s result relative to the index. |
| Tracking error or tracking difference | Published figures over the same periods and using the same benchmark. | These show how closely the fund has followed its index; tracking error is the difference between portfolio and benchmark returns. |
| Transaction mechanics | NAV-based mutual-fund processing versus ETF exchange trading. | The route determines when the price is set and whether a live market quote is involved. |
| Trading costs and liquidity | For an ETF, brokerage, demat charges, liquidity and bid-ask spread. | Fund expenses do not capture every cost of buying or selling exchange-traded units. |
SEBI Investor defines tracking error as the difference between the returns of a portfolio, such as a mutual fund or ETF, and its benchmark index. Treat it as one comparison measure rather than a promise about future performance. The available source information does not provide current, comparable scheme values, so a provider ranking would not be supported.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling a futures contract an index fund. A fund unit and an exchange-traded derivative have different structures, transaction processes and risks.
- Comparing a fund to the wrong benchmark. Verify whether it tracks Nifty 50 or Nifty Bank before interpreting its performance.
- Using expense ratio as the only selection measure. Tracking and, for ETFs, trading costs and liquidity also affect the comparison.
- Assuming an ETF price is its end-of-day NAV. ETF units trade during the session at exchange prices; mutual-fund NAVs are declared after markets close.
- Reusing an old futures lot size, expiry or margin figure. Check live NSE contract terms and broker margin information before trading.
- Treating a cross-margin quantity as a retail minimum. The quantities in the cited NSE Clearing circular apply to its specific cross-margin context.
- Choosing futures without understanding exposure. Review notional exposure, margin, expiry, settlement and risks before considering a derivatives trade.
What to verify before investing
- For a fund or ETF: the current scheme name, benchmark, availability, expenses and tracking disclosures from the AMC.
- For an ETF: the broker’s current charges, demat costs, market liquidity and bid-ask spread.
- For futures: the current NSE contract file, lot size, expiry and settlement details, plus the broker’s margin and charge information.
- For any route: whether the product and its transaction method match your intended exposure and holding period.
