How to Invest in Indian IT Stocks: Risks, Valuation and Key Metrics

Short answer: Invest in Indian IT stocks only after comparing the latest company filings with dated exchange prices. Examine revenue growth, management guidance, operating margins, cash generation, balance-sheet strength and valuation multiples together, then test the company against market, currency, liquidity, business and volatility risks. A low price-to-earnings ratio by itself is not proof that a share is cheap.

This is an educational research framework, not a current stock ranking, target price or personal recommendation. Prices and valuation multiples change daily, while company figures apply to specific reporting periods.

What investing in Indian IT stocks actually requires

An Indian IT company can look attractive because of a familiar brand, a large dividend, rapid share-price growth or a low headline multiple. None of those observations answers the central question: what future cash flows are you paying for, and what could prevent the business from delivering them?

A disciplined process links four things:

  • Operating evidence: reported revenue, margins, bookings or demand commentary and guidance.
  • Financial quality: cash generation, debt, liquidity and capital returns.
  • Price: a valuation based on a dated share price and the matching financial period.
  • Risk: economy-wide exposures plus the company-specific risks in its own filings.

Read the filing first and the price second. That order helps prevent a recent price move from becoming the explanation for an investment decision.

Start with primary filings and dated market data

NSE disclosure paths

The National Stock Exchange provides an annual-reports archive and a separate financial-information disclosures page. Use these pages to obtain the company’s annual report, financial statements, exchange filings and period-specific disclosures. Record the reporting period, currency, accounting basis and whether a number is consolidated or standalone.

Do not mix a consolidated annual figure with a standalone quarterly figure, or a March year-end result with a trailing valuation calculated from a different period, without clearly labelling the difference.

Company investor-relations material

Companies often present quarterly results, annual reports, ratios and management guidance in one place. For example, the Infosys investor-relations archive includes quarterly and annual reporting, financial highlights and guidance-versus-actual comparisons. Its FY2026 integrated report should be read as a company document for that reporting year, not as evidence about every Indian IT company.

When a filing and a presentation use different definitions, prefer the audited statement and explain the company’s definition before comparing it with a peer.

The key metrics to collect

Build a worksheet for every company using the same period and definitions. The following metrics are useful because they connect business performance to the price investors pay.

Metric What to record How to interpret it Common mistake
Revenue growth Year-on-year and sequential growth, by reported period and currency Shows demand and scale. Check whether growth is broad or concentrated in a few clients or services. Treating one quarter’s currency movement or an acquisition as recurring organic growth.
Management guidance Guidance range, date issued and later actual result Indicates management’s outlook and lets you test execution against its own expectations. Quoting guidance without its period, currency or exceptional-item assumptions.
Operating margin Reported margin, definition and trend across periods Shows how much operating profit remains after delivering services. Stability can matter as much as the level. Comparing adjusted and reported margins as though they were identical.
Cash generation Operating cash flow, free-cash-flow presentation and conversion from profit Cash supports investment, dividends, buybacks and resilience when demand weakens. Assuming accounting profit automatically equals cash available to shareholders.
Balance-sheet strength Cash, debt, lease obligations, working capital and liquidity disclosures A stronger balance sheet can reduce refinancing risk and provide flexibility during a downturn. Calling a company debt-free without checking leases, guarantees or restricted cash.
Price-to-earnings (P/E) Share price date, earnings period, EPS basis and whether earnings are reported or adjusted Shows how much investors pay for a unit of earnings under the selected basis. Comparing a forward multiple for one company with a trailing multiple for another.
Enterprise value to operating earnings Enterprise value, operating-earnings definition and matching period Includes the effect of debt and cash, making it useful when balance sheets differ. Using an operating-earnings figure that excludes different items across companies.
Risk exposure Client, geography, service-line, currency, liquidity and business-risk disclosures Explains what could make the forecast or valuation fail. Assuming two companies with similar margins have identical risk.

How to compare companies fairly

Comparison is meaningful only when the axes and periods match. Use a table like this before reaching any conclusion:

Comparison axis Questions to answer Evidence to cite
Growth and demand What was reported revenue growth? Did guidance change? Was performance consistent over several periods? Quarterly and annual filings; guidance issued for the relevant period.
Profitability Is the operating margin rising, stable or falling? Are the accounting and adjustment policies comparable? Income statement, reconciliation of adjusted figures and management commentary.
Cash and capital returns Does operating cash broadly support profit? How is cash allocated? What distribution policy is disclosed? Cash-flow statement, balance sheet and dividend or buyback disclosures.
Valuation What share price date and earnings period produce the P/E? What enterprise-value and operating-earnings definitions produce the second multiple? Dated exchange price plus the corresponding company-period figures.
Risk exposure How sensitive is the business to clients, regions, currencies, liquidity and economic volatility? Risk-factor section and notes in each company’s filing.
Sector context How does the company compare with a clearly defined, current benchmark? Current official index methodology and constituent list.

The available filing paths establish where to retrieve the inputs; they do not establish a current, matched valuation table for Indian IT companies. Before publishing or relying on a comparison, download current prices and the latest same-period figures and label every date.

Valuation: use multiples as comparison tools, not verdicts

Match the date and earnings period

A P/E is meaningful only when the numerator and denominator are identified. Write down the share-price date, the earnings period, whether earnings are consolidated, and whether EPS is reported, normalized or adjusted. A multiple based on a price from October 2026 and earnings from a year ending March 2025 is not interchangeable with a multiple based on the latest twelve months.

For enterprise-value analysis, document how enterprise value was constructed and which operating-earnings measure was used. Use the same convention for every company. If one company removes restructuring costs and another does not, the resulting multiples are not like-for-like.

Ask why a multiple is high or low

A lower multiple can reflect slower expected growth, weaker margins, customer concentration, currency exposure, lower cash conversion or a temporary earnings peak. A higher multiple can reflect stronger expected growth or balance-sheet quality, but it can also leave less room for disappointing results. The multiple is a starting point for questions, not an answer about value.

Test valuation against operating evidence

  1. Compare the valuation with several periods of revenue growth rather than one unusually strong or weak quarter.
  2. Check whether operating margins support the earnings used in the denominator.
  3. Review cash generation and debt before treating earnings as durable.
  4. Read guidance and risk disclosures for events that could change the forecast.
  5. Record a valuation range with its date and assumptions instead of presenting a timeless “cheap” or “expensive” label.

Understand the major risks before buying

SEBI Investor identifies market, inflation, liquidity, business, volatility and currency risks in its securities-market risk guidance. These categories overlap, but each suggests a different check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Market and volatility risk

Share prices can fall even when a company’s latest results are good. Interest-rate changes, global risk appetite, sector rotation and disappointing guidance can reprice an entire group. Volatility measures the size and speed of price moves; it is not a substitute for business analysis. Decide in advance what loss, drawdown or time horizon you can tolerate.

Business risk

IT-services revenue can be affected by clients delaying discretionary projects, reducing technology budgets, changing suppliers or concentrating purchases with a small number of vendors. Read the filing for client concentration, service-line dependence, competition, talent availability, delivery obligations and legal or regulatory matters. Do not assume that a risk disclosed by one company applies in the same form to another.

Currency risk

Companies that invoice or incur costs in different currencies can see reported revenue and margins move when exchange rates change. Look for the currencies involved, hedging policy, sensitivity discussion and the accounting treatment of gains or losses. A favourable currency quarter should not automatically be treated as an improvement in underlying demand.

Liquidity risk

Liquidity has two meanings for an investor: the company’s ability to meet obligations and the market’s ability to absorb your order near the displayed price. Check cash, debt maturities, working capital and restricted cash in the filing. For the share itself, use appropriate order sizes and understand that a market order can execute at several prices when trading is thin or volatile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inflation risk

Wage costs, subcontractor charges, facilities and other inputs can rise faster than contract pricing. Examine margin commentary and the company’s ability to pass costs through to customers. Inflation can also reduce the real value of future cash flows, which matters when a valuation assumes many years of growth.

Read company-specific risk disclosures

SEBI’s categories are a checklist, not a substitute for the company’s filing. Infosys’s FY2026 Form 20-F states that investing in its securities involves a high degree of risk and explains that identified risks could adversely affect its business, financial condition, results, prospects and share price. Read the filing at the SEC-hosted Form 20-F for that company and reporting year.

Use the same method for every prospective investment:

  • Look for mitigating actions, but do not treat a stated mitigation as proof that the risk has disappeared.
  • Check subsequent quarterly disclosures for evidence that the risk, guidance or exposure changed.

Use NIFTY IT only as a sector reference

A SEBI-hosted document dated April 2025 describes NIFTY IT as a 10-company index weighted by free-float market capitalization. That is a dated description, not a permanent constituent list. Verify the latest official index factsheet, constituents and methodology before using it as a benchmark; the document is available at SEBI’s hosted PDF.

An index can help you ask whether an individual company moved with or against the sector, but it is not a recommendation to buy every constituent. Check how the index is constructed, how often it is rebalanced and whether your comparison uses the same price and total-return convention.

A step-by-step process for a retail investor

1. Define the decision before opening a chart

Write down the goal, time horizon, maximum tolerable loss and the portion of your portfolio that may be exposed to one sector. SEBI Investor advises investors to identify goals and risk appetite, use regulated investment products and understand the risks. Its home page states: “Understand before you invest. Choose regulated investment products. Start early, stay invested. Beware of investment frauds.” Read the guidance at SEBI Investor.

2. Use a regulated account and verify details

Choose an appropriately regulated Indian intermediary, complete the required identity and bank procedures, and check current registration and fee information directly with the relevant regulator or exchange. Do not rely on an unsolicited message, guaranteed-return claim or unverified app. Fees, taxes and account requirements can change, so confirm them at the time you open the account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Create a shortlist without ranking it prematurely

Start with companies whose filings you can obtain and understand. Record the fiscal year, reporting currency, consolidated or standalone basis and the latest available quarter. A shortlist is a research queue, not a buy list.

4. Extract the operating and financial metrics

Populate the metrics table for at least several comparable periods. Keep reported and adjusted numbers in separate columns. Note guidance at the date it was issued and enter the later actual result beside it.

5. Calculate valuation on one consistent basis

Use the same price date and financial period across candidates. Show the calculation, definitions and source for P/E and enterprise-value-to-operating-earnings. If an input is unavailable or definitions differ, mark the comparison as not established rather than filling the gap with an estimate.

6. Read the risk sections before deciding position size

Translate each material risk into a portfolio question: how much exposure is acceptable, what event would change the thesis and how quickly could the share price move? Diversification can reduce the effect of one company or sector outcome, but it cannot remove market losses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Place the order deliberately

Review the exchange, symbol, quantity, order type and validity before submitting. A limit order lets you specify the highest price you will pay or the lowest price you will accept; a market order prioritizes execution and can fill at varying prices in a fast or illiquid market. Confirm the contract note and settlement details after execution.

8. Monitor the thesis, not every tick

Set a review schedule around quarterly results, annual reports, guidance changes, major risk disclosures and material balance-sheet events. Recalculate valuation when price or earnings changes. Selling rules should be based on a changed thesis, unacceptable risk or a better use of capital—not solely on a short-term price move.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Buying the lowest P/E: Add growth, margin, cash and risk analysis before interpreting the multiple.
  • Mixing periods: Rebuild the comparison with the same fiscal period and clearly dated price.
  • Using headline revenue only: Check currency effects, acquisitions, client concentration and guidance performance.
  • Ignoring cash flow: Reconcile profit with operating cash and inspect working-capital movements.
  • Treating an index as a recommendation: Verify current constituents and use the index only for context.
  • Generalizing one filing: Read every company’s own risk section and reporting basis.
  • Following unverified tips: Use exchange filings and regulated sources instead of promises of guaranteed returns.
  • Overtrading on volatility: Revisit the original time horizon and risk limit before changing a position.

What the available evidence can and cannot establish

Official disclosure pages are available through the latest reporting cycle identified here, including financial information through the financial year ending March 31, 2026 and Infosys FY2026 reporting. They provide the documents needed for analysis, but they do not by themselves establish a current, matched set of Indian IT share prices and valuation multiples.

Therefore, a responsible article or investment note should not name a “best” Indian IT stock, publish a target price or claim that one company is currently cheapest without retrieving dated exchange prices and the latest comparable figures. Update index constituents, methodology, prices and intermediary details immediately before making a time-sensitive comparison.
